LONDON Framers • Who do you Recommend? , by crashwilliams on Aug 21, 2018 11:43:49 GMT 1, i wouldn't f**k about with framers. i love near Rochester, kent. its has about 4 framers in the high street. So have a look in the windows, and go in and have a chat.... follow forum guidance... is it all PH neutral, uv, fully reversible framing, then ask... so if I decide to sell it and bring it back to you, can you remove from the frame and it looks like new? Yep they say of course we are in the framing guild..... cool, lets do it. 4 years later advertise the framed bit of art on ebay, guy buys it and wants it shipped to Norway No problem, i'll have a quick look and see if i can remove it from the frame myself (saves a journey) Opens frame and the print has been stuck to the mount with shiny parcel tape Refund buyer and sulk Sorry to hear this, I feel your pain.
Years back (early 2000s) and I had some framing done at a gallery in SE London - spoke to the guy and he said yep, all of the above would be adhered to, event told me he was an archivist... Prints came back, even had a 'quality' sticker on the back telling me what a great job they'd done and even had the framers initials...
Took my print out of the frame and yep, stuck in there with brown packing tape - w+ankers.
I've since had another issue with another framing firm!
Over the last couple of months I've learnt so much (mostly here) and now when I go in I'm prepped with questions to ask - if something seems a good deal, it probably isn't.

Whilst not SE London, Altered Images in Burwash are brilliant - they're about an hour from Lewisham, on the way to Hastings.
I was recently at an Oli Epp talk and got chatting to the guy, turns out that he's a framer for that business, his name's Louie.
Long story short, I've jsu had five pieces back all of which have been beautifully framed, four are full conservation and I'm blown away. Even better, the prices were brilliant, very competitive - the service first class.
Theyre based on the (small) highstreet, there's parking - also a great pub opposite. They have a standard showroom with massive workspace out back - they've probably 4/5 framers working there.
Well worth seeking out if you're this side of London.

Ive recently been looking at FRAME LONDON which isn't far from me in East London but will definitely check out The Urban Framer.

They’ve been going about 9 months I believe and Gavin is ex Darbys so knows his stuff. I’ve had a few pieces framed by them and been very impressed. Definitely check them out in SE London.

LONDON Framers • Who do you Recommend? , by traegercowling on Jun 12, 2019 10:13:32 GMT 1, Hi, First post here on the Forum. But its a subject near and dear to my heart! I'm not sure what exactly the rules are regarding promotion of oneself here, but a client kindly mentioned us in this thread and I wanted to follow up.
We are picture framers based in Peckham, SE London. I'm ex-Darbyshire so used to working with clients that expect top quality museum and gallery framing. Before moving to London I framed for years in The San Francisco Bay area, with one of Jed Barks original staff.
For works on paper we only use Japanese paper tabs and wheatstarch paste (there are exceptions warranted on occasion, but we always seek the best practice in each case). Some framers might be able to use Japanese tabs if you pay them extra, but it is more time and space consuming so they don't unless you demand it and pay extra It's becoming lost skill in most framing studios.
It's great to be on the forum. We're looking forward to sharing the knowledge accrued over the years. We're always happy to discuss framing and art. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with us. We see clients by appointment to make sure we have enough dedicated time to find your framing solution. have a look at our website www.traeger-cowling.co.uk

I suggest that you start your own thread, otherwise your post will be lost over time. You could then post examples of your work on your own thread, if ok with your clients (as well as repeating the above concerning your standards). You can also pm message Daniel Silk and ask for a framer’s star (green if memory serves).

LONDON Framers • Who do you Recommend? , by Unica on Dec 14, 2019 14:04:22 GMT 1, Can anyone help recommend a reasonable framer near London that can frame quite a few large poster/prints that won't cost an arm and a leg. The prints have some value £1-3k but not worth taking to Darbyshire IMO, but would like hinged with a white frame no matt and UV plexi.
Any help would be most welcome, the posters can be as large as 144cm x 100cm. For example I have the three Haring Montreaux 1983 posters, a couple of Lichenstein prints and a Richter screenprint poster all rather large.

LONDON Framers • Who do you Recommend? , by Runit on Dec 14, 2019 18:21:03 GMT 1, pay £50 more and get world class framing. open your Instagram feed and actually look at the framing, I’ll give you a hint. Look at the corners and not the art. You shouldn’t be able to discern any joins and if you do then ask yourself why you’re paying for what is essentially bog standard framing using off the shelf pre moulded materials you can buy yourself off the net.

Before using him I got quotes from everyone and Louie was the best by a country mile - he's just an hour and half from me, but well worth the travel.

This x 1000
Then the hinging. Using kilos of conservation tape like many “great framers” may be “conservation”....but it’s still sh*t framing with tape
A very big proportion of the names touted on here can not realistically be considered good framing

If they want to pay for mitred edges then he does them. Most dont want to pay the extra though, not everyone has their nose up
