Banksy • Trolley Hunters, by Chris JL on Jan 30, 2018 11:33:39 GMT 1, RoboJ indeed, and you can’t be deposit insured, protected from iperinflation, easily tracked for money laundering or tax evasion etc etc
As I said, I’m sure that some here know better. Definitively worth trying to write a scientific article on this and send it to a scientific journal: there is even the (Ig) Nobel price to be had 😊
Oh, and if you are curious what these currencies are used for, look at some serious data crunching: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2544331
The above aside, block-chain is a useful technology, but that’s a totally different story.
PS still wondering whether the OP will declare capital gains on the transaction

Banksy • Trolley Hunters, by gd79 on Jan 30, 2018 15:20:58 GMT 1, Since this is now sold, an Economics Nobel prize take on bitcoins and crypto currencies: www.nytimes.com/2018/01/29/opinion/bitcoin-bubble-fraud.htmlOh, and in case you are wondering, his Nobel was motivated by his works on trade and currencies. But what does he know? I’m sure many on this forum know better 😊 I'm sorry but you cant put out a one sided story and say there you go... Bitcoin has an intrinsic value because of the block chain. The block chain is like the invention of the wheel. Its such a big improvement over what we already have so unless somebody invents a better system then its here to stay. The individual coins them selves yes may be bubbles but crypto currencies definitely are not. So what makes Bitcoin better than fiat, which pretty much is a digital currency? Its more secure, I don't have to pay a bank huge fees as a middle man, I can pay anybody anywhere in the world with no hastle and most importantly it can't be quantitatively eased.
Bitcoin is quantitatively eased as part of its design... At least until the last coin is mined. Further, bitcoin does not give you any ownership of the blockchain technology. Great tech or not... And I'm yet to see a real world application that actually increases efficiency on the status quo.

Banksy • Trolley Hunters, by daveart on Jan 30, 2018 17:34:27 GMT 1, Technologoy being what it is - blockchain is not the next wheel - its the next little tiny step on an ongoing evolution of digital technology that started 30 years ago. In 20 years you wont recognize where we are today any more than the 'its the new wheel' technology of 20 years back is still viable.
locking wealth in a totally electronic system could leave the system very vulnerable to hacking - oh wait - that's already happened a dozen times in the last few years to the tune of a combined what .. billion dollars of loss? Can you imagine if the NYSE said .. oops .. lost $1,000,000,000 of stock certificates?
And i dont understand why people benefiting from strong central banking and government services would actively seek out to change the economy to something that undermines both.
But its fun and interesting i'll give it that .. but really not much more interesting as my daughter and mom talking about their Starbucks Coffee 'Starbucks' .. which is probably the original ecurrency.

Hmmm.. I spent most of 2016 debating whether a small Italian bank called Monte de Paschi had any value or not.... The hours of arguing didn't mean a jot.
I could say the same about a few other banks now.
A reason for crypto to exist for sure. But above post is right. In ages years we'll be miles away from bitcoin. It will be hacked at will once the next batch of supercomputers come out.

I wouldn't be mad if I had some I got in trade etc, but I wouldn't ever put my money into it.

That's like saying fiat money is flawed because in the 50's thieves were able to rob banks.

That's like saying fiat money is flawed because in the 50's thieves were able to rob banks. Actually, fiat money was flawed in the 50's and prior and probably still now in ways but governments literally around the world have invested billions of dollars in protecting the banking system including insurance on deposits, massive amounts of oversight, banking regulation, international money flow regulations, etc, etc. this investment is worth it as the dependability of the systems is literally what the free world economies are based on .. a general trust that your money is safe and that transactions are safe. blockchain is interesting no doubt and if you love it i am not trying to change your mind. to me, who cares if blockchain is so fantastic if no one can secure wallet level software.
