Street Art & Stickers may kill us all in the future, by chevyav53 on Aug 8, 2018 21:45:24 GMT 1, COMPUTER HALLUCINATIONS
Computer vision is already creeping into vehicles on our roads โ many use cameras and object recognition software to control self-parking technology. As cars become more autonomous, they will rely more and more on computer vision to navigate.
While computers have proven to be adept at recognising objects, recent research has shown they can also be tricked in some quite worrying ways. One study by the University of Washington showed that strategically placing a couple of stickers or graffiti on stop signs can confuse driverless car algorithms so they no longer recognise it.
Another recent study showed that it is even possible to induce "hallucinations" in computer vision systems by changing the texture of an object. To human eyes, the shape and colour might look completely normal, but to the machine it could look like something totally different.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology fooled a common AI computer vision system created by Google into thinking a 3D-printed model of a turtle was a rifle.
Andrew Ilyas, who led the research, warns an attacker could use a similar approach to change the texture of a solid object so a self-driving car sees it as a section of ordinary road. "There's certainly a risk," he says. "We haven't tried attacking self driving cars ourselves, yet."

Street Art & Stickers may kill us all in the future, by moron on Aug 8, 2018 23:11:23 GMT 1, Let's face it, the technology is not up to scratch and these companies testing these vehicles on public roads should be prosecuted.
The Uber case where the self drive car killed a woman crossing the road at night. The debate was whose fault was it, the person in the car or the woman. It was Ubers and also the person in the car even though he was employed by Uber just to sit in the car, those vehicles should never be tested on public roads.
Reason these companies are forcing this self drive crap onto the public is because it's a way of raking in investors.
Can't beat a Tucker for a high tech car. (swiveling headlight)
