When they release the exact same image again under the guise of 'new edition'
Not going to mention the artists.
(I mean EXACT same image.....colour variations excluded)

Discussion: when is an artist exploiting his success?, by ditisdeleven on Sept 4, 2018 21:34:00 GMT 1, Some interesting comments in here. Thanks for that, please keep going
I mentioned before why I started this topic, but maybe a picture will add something to this discussion: 'Sandra Chevrier puts her name and signature on a piece of art that looks like this (picture by Kapusta):
<blockquote class="imgur-embed-pub" lang="en" data-id="a/5GHnv4H"><a href="//imgur.com/5GHnv4H"></a></blockquote><script async src="//s.imgur.com/min/embed.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Well, that is exploiting to me...

Discussion: when is an artist exploiting his success?, by Deleted on Sept 5, 2018 11:57:30 GMT 1, Also have to take into account the frequency of works. Some alphabet artists seems to have a conveyor belt going weekly.
I would also add Nick walkers vandal into the earlier lists.

Discussion: when is an artist exploiting his success?, by pada1 on May 8, 2019 15:40:21 GMT 1, Is it truly about repetitiveness of their style or just on the frequency of prints release for “general public”?
Imo, what kills it for any artist is when internet is flooded by multiple editions of artworks for the sole purpose and draining everyone’s wallet (i doubt it is to content everyone when the audience is not “the world”). Many artists keep their style for years while evolving very slowly, and manage very well the way they edition their work.

That's not exploiting his success though is it! In fact it's the opposite. He'd make more by releasing more prints more regularly. He's not selling his own prints on the secondary market!!
Although, overall, he might be increasing his popularity by making his prints rarer... It's debatable!

I tend to think that he gives his street art to the real fans who can’t afford to buy his work anymore. Not to mention putting on event like Dismaland for us. And what an event that was!

Discussion: when is an artist exploiting his success?, by Deleted on May 8, 2019 15:59:10 GMT 1, Just skimmed this (didnt read a thing but the title)
I don't think they do
more chance of a gallery exploit an artist
also and changing tack slightly, I saw Steve Martin (him with a big nose and 2 brains) was exhibiting some aboriginal art that he owned at the Gargosian, that brought to mind exploiting ones name to promote something else that he had self interest in.
We are all tarts I suppose.
Have I missed the point again?

When it comes to prints , agree the galleries ,pop up shops, print houses over expose their artists as they gain way more than canvases on sales as they usually fund the prints and place sales so with an entire print run taking £30k to £200k and receiving 30-60% of the sales it's in their interest to saturate the market .plus the with the amount of special releases and variants that come after long term people are losing interest . An artist can fall and lose their appeal but their manager / representative can move on and find another artist and not suffer the same backlash and repeat the process again.

Discussion: when is an artist exploiting his success?, by Icesay on May 8, 2019 19:24:27 GMT 1, It's an interesting conversation. Is it the artist exploiting people or people exploiting the artist? There are people that promote artists no matter how good the art or ideas are and they do it for personal gain in one way or another. We see it here on this forum. In my opinion the consumer is as much to blame as the artist or their representative. People exploit the connections they have too. Doubtless an artist needs to survive but people don't have to support them. It's when crap art is promoted as the next big thing it all goes tits up.

Discussion: when is an artist exploiting his success?, by Guy Denning on May 8, 2019 21:35:05 GMT 1, It's when crap art is promoted as the next big thing it all goes tits up. Sadly, not when the criterion for the next big thing is nearly always just "what's new". The true taste-makers are the small circle of gallery owners that choose the new art at source, and they choose to primarily feed a market that, like all modern markets in non-essential goods, needs novelty.

Discussion: when is an artist exploiting his success?, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on May 8, 2019 22:06:05 GMT 1, I remember when I started collecting and bought a nice static print 50ed.. then they released the same image as an open edition, i wasn’t happy!! It was then I thought, I can’t really blame them for exploiting their success, this usually happens when they have PR managers or galleries pushing them.. end of the day as coach says they all have to put food on the table and pay bills, a lot over the years we have seen rise and fall and when they fall and haven’t re invented themselves with new work, it’s hard for them to continue to sell out and their popularity wanes.
So the key is like a band member, actor etc. anyone in the arts. They should put their money away and not blow it as it’s hard to maintain the success. My ex years ago was an agent for actors and you’d see young guys make a stack of cash and blow it drugs, partying and high class hookers. Now he’s lucky to get voice over for an ad now and again and works doing all sorts to pay the bills.
I don’t own any but artists like blu, roa, bast etc.. I have always liked these artists and would love an OG, they don’t release that many prints and it keeps the appeal/interest with the collectors..
