A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by rbrt on Oct 8, 2018 21:13:43 GMT 1, The shredding was being discussed on BBC Radio 4 this morning. Will Gompertz (the BBC Arts Editor) said that Sotheby's asked Pest Control twice if they could remove the painting from the frame to inspect it and were told by PC they could not "as it would damage the artistic and monetary value of the artwork".
Seeing a few comparisons with KLF burning £1,000,000 on this. Definitely think that was a crazier (or bolder) thing to do as Banksy can do an exact copy of this. Bill Drummond from the KLF when asked if he regretted said, "Of course I regret it - who wouldn't!. My children especially regret it, but I don't regret it all the time."

Defo a copy I'd say. Also they mention "one of just 600 mint condition prints in the world." I doubt there are 600 mint condition prints either. They must just make it up as they go along.

This is just a fabrication. Nothing more than a cynical business advertisement for "art specialists", but masquerading as a genuine news article.
The idea is to flatter dupes — by making them feel more intelligent than the people they're supposedly reading about.
MailOnline is all-too-happy to collude in the deception. Any piece with "Banksy" in the title is guaranteed clickbait (i.e. indirect ad revenue) for the website.

The difference is that Banksy is the artist and therefore can make another one or another hundred right after shredding one, burning it, and throwing it away.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by rbrt on Oct 9, 2018 10:13:00 GMT 1, The shredding was being discussed on BBC Radio 4 this morning. Will Gompertz (the BBC Arts Editor) said that Sotheby's asked Pest Control twice if they could remove the painting from the frame to inspect it and were told by PC they could not "as it would damage the artistic and monetary value of the artwork". Surely that would be a question for the owner of the piece, not for Pest Control? Bearing in mind Sotheby's detailed provenance on the lot as having been "acquired directly from the artist by the present owner in 2006".
Ergo, it must have been Pest Control who submitted the piece to auction, which rubbishes Banksy's statement of intent in the video he released after the sale stating "a few years ago I secretly built a shredder into a painting in case it was ever put up for auction".
I would guess Sotheby's asked the owner (Jo Brooks?) and the owner (who I think would be someone in the Banksy team as they would not leave this to chance) was told to say the frame was made by Banksy and part of the artwork. Once that is said then Sotheby's would need to confirm with Pest Control or they might be effecting part of an artwork that they knew would get high six figures. Sotheby's and PC no doubt have contact on high end artwork, so relatively normal for this to happen. Easy for PC to say to Sotheby's that they cannot take it out. That was enough for Sotheby's to think of the £s & $s and leave it as is.
I do not think Sothebys had anything to do with this as that goes against everything Banksy has positioned himself with to date. Banksy has positioned himself outside the art establishment since his first exhibition. Sotheby's are 100% art establishment. But you never know.
Ofcourse Banksy and PC were not giving out all the facts, if they did then this would not have worked. From what I understand that video that Banksy posted was initially pulled quite quickly from his social media but someone recorded it and that recording went viral then Banksy re-uploaded it.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by adewilliams on Oct 9, 2018 10:35:29 GMT 1, definitely time to shred any Pekham rock postcards.
Just catching up with this thread, loved the stunt but thought Banksy should have just stayed quiet about the whole thing. The story about building the shredder into the frame just incase was a bit difficult to swallow.
Good fun all in all though

An excellent article. Thanks for posting. Jonathan Jones is always worth reading.
He is spot on when he criticises people who keep talking about how much the artwork is now worth.
Art should be about the appreciation of the image, not about how much it is worth or how much it might be worth in the future. As Jones says, it's perhaps the best thing he has ever done.

Someone says it's now worth zillions of trillions because of a cheap stunt.
Which proves that the whole Banksy hype and marketing machine is obsessed with money and so is Banksy.

Presumably, they'll be congratulating themselves about how clever they are, at least compared to some readers of tabloid newspapers.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by moron on Oct 9, 2018 11:00:28 GMT 1, The Sotheby's stunt reminds me of this. www.nytimes.com/2013/11/09/nyregion/bidders-cry-foul-over-auction-of-banksy-painting.html
I don't believe that Banksy shredded anything at the Sothebys sale.
The blades that are shown where Banksy hands are building the shredder are facing side ways and won't shred anything. Paper shredders don't work that way and any paper lowered through those blades would just get stuck.
The image on paper coming out of the frame is curved or curled at the bottom. What would cause that so quickly to a very flat artwork on paper in the frame?
Sothebys did not notice the wide gap or slit running along the underside of the fat frame?
So unless Banksy actually shows this device in action with the back board removed shredding a single authentic print that is inside the visible from front part of the frame. It's safe to assume either that the art on paper in the front is actually longer than it looks with another image with a shredded part at the bottom of it that went through some sort of roller to show coming out the bottom of the frame. Or the front image went up and an image hidden in the back pre-shredded, went down.
Nice try but no cigar for Banksy or Sothebys.
They both got publicity from this cheap stunt and the hype an dmoney train continues for a while at least.
