A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Tobi187 on Feb 17, 2019 8:24:19 GMT 1, why does the bottom of the shredded canvas look like that, is it mould? I thought the same but its hard to figure this out. The museum staff had also no clue.

The canvas is covered in lead paint so the weight of the canvas could fall through the shredder but it didn't work

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by moron on Feb 17, 2019 22:29:27 GMT 1, Looks fine to me, just that the photo is low quality and the shredded part is in the shadow caused by frame etc. It's probably some overspray or smudges that look worse in the pic than real life. Banksy (POW) did well selling it through Sothebys

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by ocean89 on Sept 18, 2023 22:38:17 GMT 1, I feel that I have to re-open this thread, as we all got more information at the GoMA about the item. I am a big fan of Bansky, but there is absolutely no way the museum did not know about the mechanism.
I mean there were 2 (or 3?) gel batteries in it. And also all of the rest medal parts. The whole thing must be much more than a usual painting plus frame of this size. As they carry those items every day, the must notice it immediately. Also - if you watch the Beltracchi documentation, Sothebyโs do their own checks of artworks and frames buy putting them under special light and in x-rays.
Also these batteries loose most of its power after a year of not using them. Depending on how it got to the auction, it must have been waiting for years to become this unique piece.
So there are two options: A) Sothebyโs know Bansky and got it straight from him so that they know itโs authentic (and maybe managed to work with him together) B) Sothebyโs would check every Pigment of frame and artwork to make sure that the artwork is authentic - as specially a very often copied one.
What do you think?

And we love him for it, like the filthy whore dogs that we are, lapping desperately at his artistic teats.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by drip on Sept 19, 2023 0:08:09 GMT 1, What's kinda interesting is that he created this stunt, THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE INVOLVED THE COOPERATION AND PARTICIPATION OF A MAJOR AUCTION HOUSE, and then he later showed us exactly how he constructed it, leading us to make up our own minds about whether magic is real.
It's a bit like David Copperfield making an elephant disappear and then later having a show at a Glasgow museum where he says, "Look at my big fucking mirrors".
