A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Extra Ball on Oct 9, 2018 11:25:05 GMT 1, Am I the only one who thinks the blades in the shredder are placed wrong? They are cutting from left to right and this makes it impossible to cut paper like it came out of the frame.... totally agree with you. all this is a big scam done by the collective Banksy with the agreement of the auction house. To take the buyers of his pieces hostage is a real lack of respect towards them. all this, even if the shot is well played me a serious problem Banksy and his collective are they quite contemptuous of buyers that only the buzz is important. Is Sotheby's integrated in its sales or does it handle the auctions?

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by met on Oct 9, 2018 11:57:11 GMT 1, Good to see Jonathan Jones, of all people, laying into the My Art Broker Joey buffoon and his ilk
An excellent article. Thanks for posting. Jonathan Jones is always worth reading. He is spot on when he criticises people who keep talking about how much the artwork is now worth. Art should be about the appreciation of the image, not about how much it is worth or how much it might be worth in the future. As Jones says, it's perhaps the best thing he has ever done. This would be my position as well.
Jones is knowledgeable, intelligent and considered. Of equal importance is the fact he holds views I often disagree with or would strongly qualify. [Likewise with Robert Hughes and Brian Sewell when they were alive.]
That is the kind of person I pay most careful attention to.

No disrespect to you Met, or any other fans out there, but I think Jonathan Jones is a cunt, pardon my French.
This is what he wrote a year ago about Girl With Balloon.
"Britain’s best-loved artwork is a Banksy. That’s proof of our stupidity
"This is what scares and depresses me about Banksy. The very lack of art in his art is what makes it popular. Real art is elusive, complex, ambiguous and often difficult. "
In other words if art were easy Jonathan Jones would be out of a job. Wouldn't that be great?

"About suffering they were never wrong, The old Masters: how well they understood Its human position: how it takes place While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along..."

Anything by Michelangelo or Francis Bacon, for a start, to take two very different artists.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Deleted on Oct 9, 2018 12:48:48 GMT 1, When Jonathan Jones said..."Under its fake radicalism, Banksy’s Girl with Balloon is the kind of sentimental tosh our great grandparents too would have voted as Britain’s best-loved" he is, of course, absolutely right. If people think that is snobbery then they need to take a cold hard look at themselves in the mirror. There's a huge amount of inverted snobbery around.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Hairbland on Oct 9, 2018 13:02:48 GMT 1, That's just post hype , hype and nothing more. Someone says it's now worth zillions of trillions because of a cheap stunt. Which proves that the whole Banksy hype and marketing machine is obsessed with money and so is Banksy. No, it's high profile in the New York Times - also known as mainstream. Even Jerry Saltz, who usually has a bug up his arse (like yourself, but he's an art critic not a small forum poster) loved it.

Yep poetry works - especially with the aid of Google search - when you're trying to make something uncomplicated seem more complex than it actually is. Ask any essay-writing student.
This is the most poignant line in that whole piece, mainly because of how far off the mark Jones is:
"Perhaps the real reason Hoepker sat on it at the time was because it would be egotistical to assert his own cunning as an artist in the midst of mass slaughter."
The answer is far more simple. Anyone who has seen the photo will know that.

No offence taken whatsoever. We can agree to disagree.
Regarding Jonathan Jones's Girl With Balloon article from last year, I actually think it's well-written. Not that I accept every point made. But on the whole, the piece for me is informative, entertaining and thought-provoking.
That is what I seek from art reviews. I also want my existing opinions challenged — more so than confirmed. And therein lies the real value of an art critic's work. If they can change your mind about something (however small it may be), or push you to see things in a different light, that's pretty special.
[Now, whether or not the critic happens to be "a cunt" is of minimal concern to me. In fact, a rather large proportion of the people I find interesting and worthwhile spending time with could easily be described this way. Pleasantness can be overrated.]

As an aside, there's also a number of comments about Girl With Balloon in this thread:

Everyone has a small comment to make about his work when they did not know him 15 days ago. Its popularity and rating are growing thanks to all this. And everything is built on it, from the beginning. For me, this guy is a scam. Do you think Picasso was doing his best to sell when he was at valauris or warhol at the factory? They did not need advertising to spread their art, people recognized it. Without this noise around him, it would be known only by a handful of Londoners

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Deleted on Oct 9, 2018 14:57:52 GMT 1, I like a lot of Warhol's work but to say he wasn't "doing his best to sell" is clearly ridiculous. Of course he was. He very carefully managed his persona and his art and his interviews are meticulously choreographed. He also constantly fraternised with the right people. But I wouldn't call him a scam for doing so, in the same way that Banksy is also not a scam for doing so.

Even Jerry Saltz, who usually has a bug up his arse (like yourself, but he's an art critic not a small forum poster) loved it. down with art critics Power to the small forum poster Was going to reply to this (am, so meta) but what's the point?

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Hairbland on Oct 9, 2018 15:03:02 GMT 1, I dont get your point.. we do live in a world of Social Networks.. so to say if they werent here he wouldnt exist doesnt make sense to me.. Or is it me who has missed the point? Just wondering.. sotheby's video is looping since Saturday, everywhere, all the time. Without this noise around him, it would be known only by a handful of Londoners your examples are uninformed. remind me of those that saw the birth of modern art in the 60s saying their kindergarten kid could do that.

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by jimbofatz on Oct 9, 2018 15:15:33 GMT 1, I think everyone knows that banksy is currently marketed for the 35+ year old with money that still wears limited edition sneakers/leather jackets and DJs in Ibiza....or more likely the people who want to pretend they have that lifestyle.
Is banksy just a brand now? We all know its a collective marketing blitz and calling them an old school crew by old graffiti definition is getting harder and harder. The people involved have the credibility in the community to do whatever the hell they want. The reality is it was time for banksy to say goodbye a while ago as POW pointed out should have ended 3 years ago really. But I do also realize that's like me saying all their new albums suck. They use to rule. There needs to be a coachella reunion cash out system for artists just like there is for bands. Pay everyone out of ruining something great. I can only hope that is what we've been seeing with all of these unofficial shows.

The point of what?
My point was that your condescending post spouting that an art critics point of view is worth more than anyone elses is just bollocks (to me)
But maybe you're right, perhaps someone qualified can answer

Do you agree with him?

No, i can't say I do like Gove or his outlook, so perhaps i should retract my previous 2 statements
I think i was being childish :-)
I think it was the term 'small forum user' that got my back up a bit, and i went all silly
So i shall apologise and say no more on the issue. I value all critics (if they are the same as experts) views and hate Gove with a rather large passion

A Banksy Painting 'Self-Destructed' Sold for $1.1Million, by Graham H on Oct 9, 2018 18:45:03 GMT 1, Im not in any way knowledgeable about Picasso, so I wont make a fool of myself debating his practices, however, surely this is a fishing trip to say Warhol didnt do his best to sell...
He was the absolute master at marketing - utilising every opportunity and means of earning as much money as he could .. he set the bench mark that many have tried to follow in content, self promotion, 'mingling' in the right circles ( portrait anyone?.. that'll be $20k thanks you very much ), utilizing the art critics and playing galleries..
As for the relativity of self promotion using the mediums that are relevant at the time an artist practices eg Social Media ( print media in Warhols case ) ive absolutely no idea what relativity this has to someone being a scam... or again am i missing the point?
