Backdoor Banksy Prints, by dodge on Feb 2, 2008 8:53:08 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice guys. Guess I am going to have to save my pennies. I wouldn't care but over Christmas I had a load of money saved up and bought myself a new motor. About 3 days later a lovely LIITA appeared on auction saboteur but by then I had spent up!

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by snakes on Feb 2, 2008 15:58:06 GMT 1, They are not all pinched.
A lot of so called backdoor prints were even distributed by POW to galleries when they first started out in packs of examples.
They sent an assortment of prints that were unsigned and un-stamped just to be able to demonstrate the quality of the print, type of paper etc etc in an effort to drum up custom. Thats also why shops such as forbidden planet etc used to sell banksy prints in the good old days of when no so many people wanted them.
Also some of the backdoor runs were just given out to staff at the time of print as also these prints were only selling for a few quid then and not the megga bucks as they do now. I imagine if they realised what the true values may become there may have been better quality and control assurances in place.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by snakes on Feb 2, 2008 15:58:58 GMT 1, What is a reasonable price for a back door print? A couple of Banksy pieces I would love to own (Flower Thrower & Monkey Queen) are kicking around as shifty jobbies from the printers. I could not afford the originals but wouldn't mind framing one of these. What is the usual going rate for them?
Ps. the going rate is the amount that you would be prepared to pay for a picture you enjoy.

Isnt that just what prints are at the end of the day (expensive posters).
I have prints with history, provenance etc but if i can get the same image for a fraction of the price I happily would and have done.
I had a toxic mary with full prov. I sold it on ebay and for the amount that i sold it for i purchased an identical TM, a Monkey Queen and a HMV (all backdoor) and other than missing the blindstamp and number they are the same (same stock, same ink, and made by the same screen printer).
Each to their own i suppose but I am very happy with what i got.

As for being made by the same screen printer... how do you know that? Same stock and ink or similar stock and ink? Any way of knowing? "They feel the same" or " the guy I bought them from said...." really doesnt stand up too well as provenance...
Nothing personal but it only seems the folk who either own or are selling backdoor prints seem to defend them.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by foundation on Feb 2, 2008 17:44:39 GMT 1, Here's an image of my back door monkey queen. You'll also been happy to know that the high res version has been passed out to many forum members. So that means there will also be a lot of back door backdoors or reprints / poster backdoors now aswell!
No, they'd be forged prints ( if anyone was daft enough to try and pass them off as real)... the reason backdoor prints are called backdoor prints is they were carried out the backdoor of the printers when either no-one was looking or printed afterhours..... either way without the permission of the artist or distrubutor...... pretty much adds up to theft in my book. Just find it amusing you sold a legit, full prov print to buy unauthorised backdoor posters..... suprised you admitted to that never mind feel the need to boast about it

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by crazyarsemother on Feb 2, 2008 19:38:53 GMT 1, c**ts like me are taking them back. They are duplicate numbers and a f""k up on POWs part. That means they devalue someone elses prints, maybe someone on this forum who paid good money in good faith. I owe POW a lot already - they are good guys so they go back. I hate Grin Reaper anyway. Its ugly and cheap looking. Black, grey and yellow. The reference to it being Grin and not Grim is really annoying. Leave 'death' to Hirst. If they will let me I want to burn it. Loving Banksy then burning one of his prints is so Rock and Roll.

Not quite. The duplicate 'Grin Reaper' prints had no provenance, and their edition numbers were already allocated to other copies which were registered in the names of their purchasers.
I understand the prints had been kept in closed tubes for more than a year before crazyarsemother's girlfriend finally opened them and realised the mistake.
By this time, there were no more 'I Fought The Law' prints available at POW. Ben had to go through the hassle of bringing out the old screens in order to pull just two copies to rectify the error. Well done to POW for doing so.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by Rude Copper on Feb 3, 2008 10:02:21 GMT 1, f**k me, this arguement is so tedious. when pow, pymca kicked off, it was very much an amateur set up, it was a new venture for all concerned & they made mistakes, printed overuns, gave them to freinds, shops, etc i remember going to a janes addiction gig & seeing dozens of turf wars being sold, they were stapled all over the foyer, i doubt any were numbered. test prints?, how would you know if liita looked better gold or red without printing a couple up?. of course the prints came from the same printer, it was only when it started to get sucessful that they took it more seriously, the fact is that they are out there,& like it or not , they are relevant. (see warhol/sunday prints) As to value, if a laugh now would cost you ยฃ1200-ยฃ1500, then the unauthorised copy is probably around ยฃ250-ยฃ500, yes its an overrun, but its not wothless. in a way, by todays standards, its almost commendable for someone to buy one of these, in the full knowledge that what they are buying will not accumalte any value, because, in essence, they are buying it for the love of the image.

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by foundation on Feb 3, 2008 11:22:32 GMT 1, in a way, by todays standards, its almost commendable for someone to buy one of these, in the full knowledge that what they are buying will not accumalte any value, because, in essence, they are buying it for the love of the image. Bollocks. If your buying for the love of the image, save yourself a couple of hundred quid and print one out, if you want to own a banksy save up and buy a real one ......

Backdoor Banksy Prints, by snakes on Feb 3, 2008 14:25:23 GMT 1, f**k me, this arguement is so tedious. when pow, pymca kicked off, it was very much an amateur set up, it was a new venture for all concerned & they made mistakes, printed overuns, gave them to freinds, shops, etc i remember going to a janes addiction gig & seeing dozens of turf wars being sold, they were stapled all over the foyer, i doubt any were numbered. test prints?, how would you know if liita looked better gold or red without printing a couple up?. of course the prints came from the same printer, it was only when it started to get sucessful that they took it more seriously, the fact is that they are out there,& like it or not , they are relevant.
Good call
