Is Martin Whatson overpriced?, by wappinghigh on Nov 16, 2018 22:43:51 GMT 1, Martin Whatson has become predictable, commercial, and as a consequence his art is now overpriced and in my view it is suffering because of it.....
Alas.
(I'd still love one of his works, but I now don't know where to turn with this guy: I'm lost in all the "carry on" with lottery winnings and "special people" etc. )
Discuss.
(No offence to the artist. This IMO and "it is what it is" I guess)...

Is Martin Whatson overpriced?, by wappinghigh on Nov 16, 2018 22:56:43 GMT 1, ebay prices in my view seem ridiculous people winning lotteries then flipping them straight away for double the price... how does this benefit the artist? If folks like his work and want to pay that sort of money for it?...that's great!. But how does this benefit him? He should be getting that double windfall IMO.

But thereโs only 50 of them in the world. Ahh ok Iโve got money and I want it Iโm going to pay double what that other guy is going to. Pay. SOLD

Then why not just price them properly at double the price they are currently listed? If that's "the market"? And simply sell them like that straight off the site? No lotteries. No carry on. Just list them and be done with it. If they sell, they sell at those prices and the artist get's his proper commission. Sorry I am a bit of a newbie to this way of purchasing art that's all... Thanks for the replies everyone. Cheers

Is Martin Whatson overpriced?, by Chris JL on Nov 16, 2018 23:20:56 GMT 1, There is no intrinsic value/objective value. A lot of people buy his stuff at his sticker prices in a second, so hard to claim that his release prices are high - I would have happily paid what asked for his latest lottery release (except for one image). Yes, many of his things donโt tell me anything (e.g. his zoo pieces cum tags...), but for instance there is one image that I tried to get for ages until few weeks ago, and after seeing it in the flesh Iโm a super happy camper (zero tolerance). De gustibus non est disputandum, as well as the credit cards that go with it ๐

Buyers on release provide liquidity. For that, they are compensated with a discount. Stuff at double or triple, or more, of the resale value do sell indeed... but eventually. Immediacy is costly (in terms of discount needed to achieve it), but is per se valuable since it is perceived as a signal about demand and upside potential. It actually all makes quite a lot of sense (for an economist at least...)

Serious respect for anyone who gets off their arse and wants to get the message of what's wrong with the world out there and.... onto the street.. That can't be an easy thing to do... just not sure with the current work that's all... and don't have a clue how all this lottery thing works. It does the reverse for me.. It makes me wary and cautious... maybe I should have titled the thread Martin Whatson's (new) works are underpriced (by those selling them)... Anyway. Don;t know where to turn with this guy that's all. Not new to street art. Or modern art in general... just the way street art is "onsold" off the street and onto peoples inhouse walls that's all.... Cheers ...

Most of it I wouldnt hang purely because i have limited space and other things that Iโd prefer but I really like his stuff and his climber print is hanging proudly on my wall.

Is Martin Whatson overpriced?, by mack on Nov 17, 2018 0:57:26 GMT 1, I'd settle for one of his skate decks. But at release price. Which I gather is around 1000 quid? The latest GP releases was A/P's, P/P's and other special editions. When he releases a multiple edition print it is still reasonably priced I would say (around ยฃ500 i think?). Just because some of his work ends up in the hands of flippers through lotteries doesn't mean it's overpriced. If it was only sold to specific collectors we would sit here discussing why it all sold to a selected group of people (like the Jerkface release on Tagliatella).
It is an impossible situation. I think it's great he makes his art available for those who likes it!

Is Martin Whatson overpriced?, by jay4077 on Nov 17, 2018 12:08:09 GMT 1, Firstly I have a Whatson "Son Of Man" mini-print. I like that (to me) it's a comment on how street artists hide behind their art, tags and alter egos. Also it's not that costly.
But most of the rest of his art it's kind of bland and repetitive. Yes, it's a nice looking graffiti-tiger, but why? And is it going to remain interesting in 10 years? Should it still be worth ยฃ1k when we down the road will have the graffiti-giraffe, graffiti-whale, graffiti-penguin etc?
I'm not speaking against the market. I'm just saying the after market prices are not for me.

I just bought what I think is one of his more interesting earlier works... it was fascinating how a few were released and popped up on his store amongst all the others?.. but sure.. it is what it is I guess.

Not to bash on the artist, but he's made it pretty far for someone that cant draw. Kinda like Trump. He made it with a bit of cheating (aka photoshopping) but he doesn't have the qualities needed to be at the level of his peers

The galleries and houses have made his drops slightly overpriced & virtually impossible to acquire without being a ballsuck/flipper. I barely even try for his drops now...have a Still Life and am satisfied.
