The *official* Dodgy ebay seller thread, by lg2771 on Dec 2, 2018 20:41:31 GMT 1, Can we have a dodgy human being thread If so I’d like to start the list by adding the man who didn’t say thank you after I held the door for him last night. I’ll never forget you. Was it a huge door ? Yeah probably 95 pounds, I had to remove it from its hinges then put it back on for him.

The *official* Dodgy ebay seller thread, by wappinghigh on Dec 3, 2018 4:48:56 GMT 1, Ok so this went well....(not) (Geez.)
Now I get a feel for this forum loud and clear. who controls it and who has really taken it over...
Ok flipping a $50 print for 400 Euro only a few months later (without disclosing the original source was a museum shop and then the 8x margin/mark up)? you beauty! not dodgy at all?
and a $120,000 USD standard size Brainwash!? yep "a bargain"! (Such artistic prowess?!)
Thanks ebay. It's not an auction house anymore. It's become a sellers online store in disguise.
Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful comments.
If anyone else has got any better ideas how to stop scamming on ebay?
Then Go for it. The platform is all yours...
They get notified about it, but because it is seller biased, continue to do little about it...
At least I tried
I will be deleting this thread in a couple hours. Not worth the stress..
.... and like i said in the OP.. in my view. And I'm sticking with it..
Oh And good luck with ebay!!!!.
You'll need it!
All IMO!!!!!
Cheers

The *official* Dodgy ebay seller thread, by wappinghigh on Dec 3, 2018 4:57:59 GMT 1, There is already a “Not good dealings with” thread, if members want to warn others about serious shenanigans in the past. If this thread is to be useful, it should be for warning each other about existing nefarious eBay listings. Actual current listings. This would help protect our community. And, it is fine to post eBay links, if the purpose is to highlight such a listing. Posting links to pieces that you might think are too expensive would be ill advised as it will water the thread down, and we should all be able to do our own research before deciding what to spend. This has the ability to be a useful thread, but not, in my opinion, in the way it looks like it will be used at present. Ok. Agreed. Then start such a thread. You are welcome to do it. I tried. And clearly failed. Cheers

Cheers I understand your frustrations in trying to propose a useful resource in making people aware of ebay scammers and the ensuing comments but I think as I mentioned previously it basically needs to be an open/shut case of it being fake or a con. The Dismaland fakes ripping people off annoy me intensely and that is just outright fraud and I wish it could be stopped but it's not the same as a guy standing in a queue for 6 hours to get a print and then flipping it for a few hundred quid. There is such a grey area inbetween that it will always be open to interpretation. For some it's an opportunity to get something they missed and for others they feel ripped off. On here people are a bit more informed and can in the main spot the fakes or ask for advice but ask the question of mark up and how long you should own a print before selling it and you will get a continuum of different answers
I used to collect music related autographs of my favourite bands on my vinyl collection and would stand for hours to try and get something signed. Sometimes successful, sometimes not. Then the ebay guys got in on it and would turn up with their home printed 10 x 8 photos and if successful I would see them up on ebay for £40/£50 a throw. Initially it annoyed me but then when you consider the hours stood, the car parking fees, coffees, travel and no guarantee of success then at times I felt it wasn't such a bad deal. Nobody holds a gun to a purchasers head and at least when I saw them listed I knew people were getting authentic signatures and not someone sat at home faking them.
Ebay buyers can be their own worst enemy for poor research but maybe the buyers sometimes do have more money than sense as let's face it I've seen sales where I'm surprised by a genuine high sale price when if they scrolled down a page or two there's the same thing considerably cheaper.
I think it's still up there for a informative thread but really does just need to be aimed at the con artists, cheats and liars.

The *official* Dodgy ebay seller thread, by wappinghigh on Dec 3, 2018 12:51:13 GMT 1, Sure thanks for the post.
Agreed. I have never been unhappy about paying a markup ever for something I missed out on... been doing that right here last couple of months and also on the bay.. I am usually OK going up to say 100% markup.. (like if I am late to the party) more than happy to give say 100% to someone with foresight ahead of me..... but 800% ?? in only a few months? that's dodgy in my view Cheers

Here is an alternative approach taken by one person on ebay (possibly on here as well)
They offer that you can ask their advise on whether the banksy stuff is genuine or not.
Sadly probably about 80% (or higher) of the stuff on ebay seems to be unofficial, copies, fakes call it what you will.
*I made up the figure of 80% but you get my point.

Unfortunately there will still be idiots out there that will believe that is just a ploy to put them off of buying a genuine Dismaland piece. To many fools with money.

The *official* Dodgy ebay seller thread, by wappinghigh on Dec 3, 2018 20:06:32 GMT 1, Props for trying to start a meaningful informative thread but as I stated at the beginning in my first post I knew it would end up this way with the items being posted. I like many others here it seems think the majority posted above are not classed as fakers/scammers/dodgy. Don’t get me wrong the unscrupulous people need and should be held to account but purchasers in general need to think and be more proactive in researching before just handing over the cash. yeah sure.
You need to understand the meaning of the word "dodgy".
The urban meaning in my view goes beyond 'faker/scammer'
I have lived in England where the term originated...so I know what I think it means...
In Australia the term has taken on a very liberal meaning.. though sure it is often spelt "dodgey"
"1. Something or someone that is a bit suspicious, doesn't seem quite right. Doesn't seem the real deal.
2. Slack, broken, worthless or useless.
3. Not very appealing."
So In my view it means "bending the truth" or being disingenuous.
Or "taking advantage of" (someones naivety) to secure a sale.
Not always putting the purchaser first... (which is so important with online transactions where the goods cannot be visualised prior to delivery)
...not disclosing the original source or provenance of the material...
or even a "rip off merchant"....
or in the case of ebay listing at a hyperinflated price (to try push the market way higher) rather than listing the goods at auction so everyone can see true worth... (the founding principle of ebay was as an auction house as I recall?)
etc etc..
Anyway we are all experts on such matters, thanks for your contribution to what I believe could have been a vey helpful thread.
Ok. I'll delete it
At least I tried.

At the end of the day as a buyer all you want is an honest dealing with the seller. And for fair market price. And for good and reasonable guidance on buying. Having great success with all this around here. Think I will stick to buying on here.... ebay sucks. IMO. Cheers

The *official* Dodgy ebay seller thread, by wappinghigh on Dec 7, 2018 22:53:46 GMT 1, Buyer??? Quinn did you mean seller?? It comes down to the way basic transactions have changed since the internet. In bricks and mortar a transaction is done real time in the flesh. There is no doubt as cash is handed over for goods. That is a defined moment. Now we have online selling of course for practical reasons, a seller needs the funds before shipment. So must at all times (once funds have been received) honour that agreement until safe delivery. IMO

There have been tyre kickers since the year dot... so what? that's selling...that's the market... so nothing, just saying.

The *official* Dodgy ebay seller thread, by Deleted on Dec 7, 2018 23:21:34 GMT 1, Maybe the trolls that want this thread shut down are because they are likely to get called out, and that is bad for business. So if you are a dodgy seller and know you're likely to get called out, clean up your act and stop being dodgy. yes Wappinghigh will out them or shut them down.
