Baroque Portfolios, by gimmix on Feb 21, 2024 23:36:58 GMT 1, Perfect - thank you! And forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I’ve got a couple of larger prints (1000mm) but the rest are smaller. I take it that there’s no downside to putting smaller prints in large sleeves?

I personally have a few different sizes, but it doesn’t matter if you put a small print in a large sleeve (just be careful they don’t slide around to the edges when moving). I don’t put more than one print/poster in a sleeve (unless exactly the same size) so they don’t risk leaving an impression if on top of each other.

Baroque Portfolios, by Dinin on Feb 22, 2024 8:34:03 GMT 1, I want some sort of archival folder so that I can remove a few newly purchased prints from their tubes and keep them protected while they flatten. All suggestions welcome please as I don’t really know where to start. Happy to take pelters if this is an awful idea, too www.baroqueportfolios.com/These are the way to go One thing I'll say about Baroque's sleeves is that they lack rigidity, so you have to be more careful if ever you're moving or transporting them. Of course you could get a more rigid insert separately but the sleeves that Acme suggested seem to alleviate the need.

Baroque Portfolios, by John The Badgers on Feb 22, 2024 14:43:10 GMT 1, I want some sort of archival folder so that I can remove a few newly purchased prints from their tubes and keep them protected while they flatten. All suggestions welcome please as I don’t really know where to start. Happy to take pelters if this is an awful idea, too If its any help gimmix, I copied Morfx's idea, and used a couple of pieces of MDF, lined with acid free card.
If you have a look here -
urbanartassociation.com/thread/106279/inexpensive-store-larger-a0-prints?page=4
You then simply separate the prints inside with glassine paper.
You can cut the MDF to suit your largest item, most DIY stores will do this for you.
Very cost effective way of storing items, and I find it really does flatten items well.
All the best with sorting.

Baroque Portfolios, by gimmix on Feb 22, 2024 20:29:48 GMT 1, I’ve already ordered AcmeThunderer’s first suggestion so hopefully that’ll suffice (for now)
Edit: Just read the thread properly - I see what you mean. It was late last night when I ordered AcmeThunderer’s suggestion and having just revisited it I realise now that I’ve only ordered one. Assumed they came as a pack or in a sleeve 🤦🏻♂️

I thought the boxes would fit about 5-6 of the portfolio sleeves I had. Will only buy the boxes once I need to store more then they can sit on top of each other. I’ve got one of the portfolio folders in A2 size as well for smaller artwork and put acid free boards in the sleeves so sturdier.

Baroque Portfolios, by smileface on Feb 29, 2024 17:36:19 GMT 1, I bought the preservationequipment movie poster boxes. They are very good and can easily hold 30+ prints. I have one left in case anyone needs one (London area)… too big to ship.
They also have smaller A4/A3/A2 boxes that I use for smaller stuff. The rest is in normal A1 art portfolio.
I‘d be careful using MDF to store prints / wouldn‘t advise it. MDF leaches formaldehyde and resin compounds, which would damage prints long term. 😱

Baroque Portfolios, by smileface on Feb 29, 2024 18:33:17 GMT 1, It would- in the long run. Paper/card is diffusion open, so anything would leach through it. Prints have been spoiled before because of a crappy wooden frame backing board (despite archival paper behind the print). Also- paper expands and contracts, so sandwiching paper under something heavy for longer might not be ideal. I wouldn‘t get the prints out of your sandwich asap, but would look for better storage options in the future/mid-term if you‘re serious with the art you are storing there. That MDF idea seems seriously silly. MDF is full of glue, resin, formaldehyde, wood dust… that is why i.e. you won‘t find any MDF backing on any picture frame. That is just my 10 cents of advice, but I‘m sure others might disagree.

Baroque Portfolios, by eyectopus on Feb 29, 2024 18:46:18 GMT 1, Here is a thread where I showed some homemade temporary storage. I have since made some boxes using the same method but with sides using foam core, they were about an inch deep to store a few prints.

Baroque Portfolios, by smileface on Feb 29, 2024 19:16:37 GMT 1, eyectopus That’s not a bad solution, but also gets quite expensive, especially in A0.
I forgot to mention that MDF is also acidic.
It’s difficult, but I admit that I’m also super anal. For my big prints I went with selwyn sleeves, acid buffered sheets in between the selwyn sleeves, and all that in the preservation equipment ltd acid buffered movie poster box.
It took me a few years before I did that because I was too tight. Why not do it though if you are buying art? Otherwise download jpegs from the web, print them at the copy shop and not worry about it.
