Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by Lionel Rich-Tea on Feb 15, 2019 17:46:09 GMT 1,
Not been posted, but thought some would be interested in this
Our stock of sleeping bags and blankets for Calais & Dunkirk is running desperately low, and right now we’re unable to keep up with demand. In the next 15 days, we need your help to collect 3,000 sleeping bags and 5,000 blankets.
Thanks to incredible public support in December, we’ve been able to distribute bedding every week of winter so far. But with over 100 evictions last month, people are once again being left in the cold with nothing to protect themselves. Our stocks are running low, and we need help to make sure anyone sleeping rough in Northern France, at the very least, has a blanket or sleeping bag to keep them warm at night.
What can you do to help?
On 27th February, we’re sending a truck to all the drop offs in London to pick up donated sleeping bags and blankets. For the rest of the UK, all donations will be picked up in the coming weeks!
So if you have any spares (or would like to organise a collection), please please please send to your local donation drop-off point before the end of the month!
A sleeping bag isn’t a bed. It’s not enough. But in the freezing cold of night, it can be the key to preventing hypothermia. Find out any and everything you’ll need to know about organising a donation in our information pack.
Where is my local drop-off?
PLEASE NOTE: If your local drop-off is an Emmaus location – please make sure to label your donation “HELP REFUGEES – CALAIS”
If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact us at calaisdonations@helprefugees.org. Thank you so much for your continued support – we love you!
If you don’t have a sleeping bag or blanket, but would still like to help, you can donate to our fundraiser for Northern France, and we’ll buy the most-needed items from local businesses.

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by Deleted on Feb 15, 2019 18:11:40 GMT 1, I have a question: Why aren't you dedicating your efforts to helping homeless people living on the street in European countries, instead of giving freebies to economic migrants that have traveled through ~10 safe countries only to get to a social welfare state, that are harrassing truckdrivers on a daily basis and are imposing an enormous burden on the local citizens of Dunkirk and Calais?

Do you want an economic argument? Because by helping and integrating those migrants you'd get an economic boost. Those are people who most willingly will work, taking low-skill occupations needed in industry and services, and pay taxes that will fund your public goods and other social services - possibly directed at the homeless.

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by sfnyc on Feb 15, 2019 18:40:23 GMT 1, I think blanksksy's question is one a lot of people think too so its good to address it (at least briefly because it would be a complex discussion): homelessness and migrations are not necessarily coming from the same causes nor do they have the same resolutions. a lot of homelessness is due to economic and mental stresses, migrating from a war-torn or impossibly corrupt country to seek a decent chance at life or supporting one's family is very honorable in my opinion and i would do the same.

If you want to talk economics, you'd know that economic migrants are a net cost, not a net benefit to a country.
The fun thing lefties always do is say that economic migrants are 'willing to work' which they could have done in any of the safe countries they have passed before getting to the UK, and then argue that economic migrants are willing to take 'low skilled' occupations, completely disregarding the fact that one of the biggest economic and social challenges in the very near future is automation and the disappearance of low skilled jobs, rendering a large part of the social underclass without a meaningful day-to-day occupation.
If anything we need less low skilled workers, not more.

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by FЯ on Feb 15, 2019 18:59:53 GMT 1, Question.
Why are they in calais, why not seek asylum in the first safe country they manage to occupy.
Don't get hot headed, it is a valid question. If France thought they were valid or if they applied in France im sure they would be put into better conditions. Maybe encourage or help with that instead as it is longer term rather than a blanket

Great endeavour, tipping my hat to all the grafters involved. I'll definitely be donating.

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by Deleted on Feb 15, 2019 19:04:12 GMT 1, Question. Why are they in calais, why not seek asylum in the first safe country they manage to occupy. Anwer:
a) Most of them will not get asylum anywhere as they are not refugees but economic migrants. b) Most of them want to get to a social welfare state where they get free stuff and money from the government.
But it's going to be fun to see a lefty answer this question.

Anwer: a) Most of them will not get asylum anywhere as they are not refugees but economic migrants. b) Most of them want to get to a social welfare state where they get free stuff and money from the government. But it's going to be fun to see a lefty answer this question. This isn't a direct answer, as I can't pretend to speak for another human's motivations. But let's remember that asylum seekers are not legally required to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. Yes, there are flawed regulations in place that intend to ensure that countries share responsibility for asylum seekers, but the asylum seekers are certainly free to act in this way. If you were in their position, and through word-of-mouth were under the impression that you would be more readily helped in one country than another, perhaps where you already speak some of the language, where would you go? If empathy is something that you tend to struggle with, which certainly seems to be the case, feel free not to think about that too hard, but I would suggest this is simply human nature.
We are talking about a small minority of asylum seekers - many more claim asylum directly in France or Germany. But if the UK is indeed somewhere that is more welcoming and helpful to those in need of help, well it's nice to be proud of the UK for something.
The glee with which you attempt to draw distinction between refugees and economic migrants is horribly distasteful. Best to just think of them as humans. Presumably you are fortunate enough that you don't feel the need to live in uncertainty and squalor in the vague hope of improving things for yourself and/or your family, and long may that continue. But the way you seem to froth at your mouth when talking about these people is most unbecoming.

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by sfnyc on Feb 15, 2019 19:41:39 GMT 1, Fast Eddie, i dont think blanksky reads reliable economic news sources or would know how to, but yes correct. to generalize it simplistically: people = GDP. More people = More GDP. But the inherent underlying resistance to immigration is not economic logic, it is always a little bit of fear and xenophobia

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by Deleted on Feb 15, 2019 19:42:28 GMT 1, @blanksky Really dude? You're living in a country that exploited and destroyed the cultures, resources and livelihoods of billions of people on this planet for centuries and you think a few thousand people in need coming for help during times of difficulties are the enemy? There's a few billion people in Africa living in poverty, which under your definition could all qualify as being 'in need'. Not a few thousand. If you import a few billion people into the few western societies that made it to being a welfare state, there are no more welfare states, just a giant social underclass with no skills and no people or money to care of them.
Also, to 'a country that exploited and destroyed the cultures blahblah'. Please don't hold people living now responsible for the supposed crimes of their ancestors. I don't own slaves and you are not working on a plantation. Also try having some gratitude for people evolving morally, instead of telling everyone that white people are all bad because of things that happend in the past.
@blanksky Really dude?

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by Fast Eddie on Feb 15, 2019 19:44:32 GMT 1, Fast Eddie, i dont think blanksky reads reliable economic news sources or would know how to, but yes correct. to generalize it simplistically: people = GDP. More people = More GDP. But the inherent underlying resistance to immigration is not economic logic, it is always a little bit of fear and xenophobia Sorry, but it is a bit sharper than that: www.oxfordeconomics.com/recent-releases/8747673d-3b26-439b-9693-0e250df6dbba

Yes, including no effects on low-skilled domestic workers wages in the US. It is not just the moral thing to do. You are literally leaving money on the table.

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by sfnyc on Feb 15, 2019 21:00:12 GMT 1, But if this discussion is gonna move forward constructively, we cant dismiss the fears of people like blanksky through insults and respond to provocation with aggressivity, because a lot of people actually think and vote like that. you need to show facts, not dismiss the negative when it exists, nothing is black or white, but address it and show how the positives outweighs the negatives. So indeed the only positive comment here when looking back is Fast Eddie featuring actual information with source - all the rest is really noise that wont convince anyone else

We (UK) had a hand in the destruction of their countries.... no doubt your blah blah attitude won't get beyond the other fact that you're ignorant to facts and morally bankrupt.

Truth is, lots of members on this forum are intelligent, rational individuals, who respond to information cogently. Including many of those I see posting ideas I disagree with. This is valuable and should not be drowned in noise and name calling.

Help Refugees UK - Need 3000 Sleeping Bags, by Poster Bob on Feb 15, 2019 23:47:44 GMT 1, Europeans sit at the bottom of the victimization hierarchy. "Refugee" status = +100 victimization points in liberal circles.
I have a question: Why aren't you dedicating your efforts to helping homeless people living on the street in European countries, instead of giving freebies to economic migrants that have traveled through ~10 safe countries only to get to a social welfare state, that are harrassing truckdrivers on a daily basis and are imposing an enormous burden on the local citizens of Dunkirk and Calais?

How about electric charging stations "everywhere" or "replacing air travel with trains", even to Hawaii?
AOC is so dumb that it's funny in a way, but then you think she actually holds an elected position in American government and you just shake your head.
But hey, if you are unwilling to work, the green new deal is pretty good for you!
