Guillaume Verda, accused of plagiarizing Basquiat, by Guy Denning on Feb 23, 2019 18:25:36 GMT 1, Story here
Sort of boggled googlised translation here...
"We had Guillaume on the phone, he received so many threats that suddenly we cancel the opening and its exhibition," says Jean-Baptiste Simon, director of the Sakura Gallery in the Marais district in Paris. The artist Guillaume Verda was to exhibit his paintings until February 24 ... Before an avalanche of messages creates controversy on Twitter, accusing him of plagiarizing the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The same neo-expressionist approach, the same colors, the masks, the words and the sentences which are spread out on the canvas in capital letters ... The Net surfers criticized the artist and the gallery for not emphasizing the obvious influence of the American painter.
"It's obvious that the inspiration is Basquiat, it's also why people see it right away. People who [were] in the gallery told me about the exhibition at the Louis Vuitton Foundation , " explained Jean-Baptiste Simon at 20 Minutes .
"You just have to assume things, I think that's what people are asking for (...) But I also think he has received a lot of hate messages," adds the director of the gallery, visibly bored. "I did not think it would make it so virulent. I assume the fact that he works as Basquiat. I do not know if he appropriates his intellectual work, in any case it's a huge source of inspiration for him. Anyone who loves Basquiat and can not afford one can find an interest in Guillaume Verda's work. "
Cultural appropriation
Beyond the issue of plagiarism, some Internet users pointed to a "cultural appropriation" on the part of a white artist. Guillaume Verda has been painting for several years. He sells abroad and lives from his work, entrusted us with the gallery. He defines himself as "at the crossroads of street and digital cultures". Trained at the Boulle school, this was to be his first exhibition in Paris. His Instagram account has more than 18,000 subscribers. "There are thousands of people who like his work and who follow him," says Jean-Baptiste Simon.
It is the gallery that decided to give up the exhibition "to calm tensions and ensure the safety of all". The artist did not want to express himself. Since the controversy, he has restricted access to his account instagram, passed in "private mode". This afternoon, his website was no longer accessible.

Guillaume Verda, accused of plagiarizing Basquiat, by sfnyc on Feb 23, 2019 21:53:36 GMT 1, If one cant tell it is Basquat imitation then I d blame it on that person, not the artist who at least paints new figures in that style... some say imitation is the best form of flattery? I ve seen a show in Paris before from an "artist" who literally took photos of street art pieces and sold these (like you see some street vendors do) except he was signing his own name at the bottom and zero attribution to the original artists... and tons of press articles about french celebrities attending - and nobody seemed to care about him stealing and selling other's works. (google Jerome Revon / the name of the exhibition was " murs murs")

Guillaume Verda, accused of plagiarizing Basquiat, by Guy Denning on Feb 24, 2019 17:58:04 GMT 1, It is a strange situation. It's not as if the artist is trying to hide his obvious love of Basquiat! I mean, if he was signing the bloody things 'Basquiat' that'd be a different issue... or if he tried to deny the influence... Most odd. It's like a few pocket experts need to reinforce their 'knowledge' over others (not that you could call knowledge of Basquiat in the art world a niche activity). The claim of 'cultural appropriation' seems a bit off the mark to me too. It's almost like it's is a tickbox exercise in outrage... is it cuz we is woke?

Guillaume Verda, accused of plagiarizing Basquiat, by mose on Feb 24, 2019 18:06:31 GMT 1, The whole concept of 'cultural appropriation' here is hilarious, given Basquiat's heavy use of Twombly and Dubuffet himself (besides the modern concept of 'cultural appropriation' being beyond ridiculous by itself).

To some it's "appropriation"

Guillaume Verda, accused of plagiarizing Basquiat, by moron on Feb 28, 2019 23:27:40 GMT 1, tommy the animator made a good take on Basquiat recently. The paintings work for me because of the twist in the wording used by Tommy in the paintings referencing today's so called values and social media.
