Kaws market "reeling"?, by moron on Mar 11, 2019 0:50:31 GMT 1, I hope its either Paul Insect, Pejac or Pose because i have invested somewhat heavily in all three of these artist. I used to think I knew stuff about how things were gonna play out in the future but now realize it is pretty much luck. Good Luck! And this is how bubbles are created. People buying art like stock. I guess make sure you get out before the bubble pops.
Exactly, and the major sale rooms are in on it too.
Before long the major priced at auction art will be created and produced by robots owned by a small group of people.
Hirsty and Koonsy say they make art because Hirsty's sexed up statues parodies of classical art and Koonsy's baubles are made by real people as if to justify that it is art and not just a product with a name attached.
When the day comes it's all created and made by robots, people will be able to invest in that crap too.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by kuni on Mar 11, 2019 1:37:27 GMT 1, Agreed. At this point he’s likely too big to fail. Too many collectors with skin in the game to let his market go to nothing. One is never too big to fail. Theoretically, sure, but there are enough collectors with deep pockets to make the market.
Reminds me of of a scene in one of those art docs where they’re talking about Warhol flower paintings and how the floor is fixed. If one of his flower paintings comes up for auction, the big Warhol collectors will make sure it doesn’t sell below a certain price. The market is fixed. Not telling you anything you don’t know already.
Also the cynical side of me thinks that Kaws is now at a level where his art can be used as a money laundering tool while being stashed away out of site in a warehouse. Certain “collectors” have a need to protect the value of those assets.

There is a concerted effort to make sure certain artist values do not fall beyond a certain point. I wouldn't even be surprised if artists give people money to buy their work just to keep the values up. So the market is being artificially propped up. Just like the housing market.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by beicoblack on Mar 11, 2019 8:14:44 GMT 1, Agreed KAWS will be around for long time, he is too much of a talent and unique in style to fail. If anyone wants to sell any prints please let me know. Where is the talent in ripping of cartoon caracters and cartoon art and changing it slightly with x's for the eyes and muffy ears? As for unique in style. Other artists in the urban art genre have done a similar thing for years. Kaws market and prices look to have been manipulated by some galleries or dealers. With all due respect I have to disagree here and I'm not even a huge Kaws fan besides his old stuff. He paid his dues in this game since the 90s and there are tons of other artists with way less talent milking this cow....
For me its a bit too much with all those open editions, tote bags and holiday crap but he clearly has a unique selling proposition a lot of people feel attracted to. If manipulated by galleries or dealers or not (what about Banksy? Brainwash?) he made his stuff desirable for a huge crowd.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by Deleted on Mar 11, 2019 12:00:18 GMT 1, I have to admit, I have a very low opinion of Kaws. It's worth looking at who is collecting his expensive pieces. As far as I know, they are all rap artists and sports stars. They are not your usual art collectors. They buy Kaws pieces because they have been told it is cool to do so. Are there any millionaire art collectors with a Warhol and a Pollock on their walls that have also bought a Kaws? I'm not aware of any. What does that tell you? You may find a Kaws outside municipal buildings and in airport terminals but do you find them in Tate or MoMA in NY? What does that tell you?

Isn't it the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth that has a Clean Slate, and co-released the toys? And Moma NY did an exclusive BFF release with him. Not sure what's in their collection though... but it shows he's on their radar.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by abacus on Mar 11, 2019 13:35:49 GMT 1, Kaws is in the evening sales at the top houses so in art market terms he has arrived I guess. It is interesting though to look at his results from the 5 lots that were offered there over the last couple of weeks.
1st mar Sothebys NY low est $250k not sold 6th mar Christies UK low est £200k hammer £380k 7th mar Phillips evening sale UK low est £700k, sold to third party guarantor below 8th mar Phillips day sale UK low est £200k hammer £250k 8th mar Phillips days sale UK low est £300k not sold
(The guaranteed lot was bought at auction at Christies NY in May 2017 for $190k).
If you count the guaranteed lot as a no sale (as I would) then that is not a good sell through rate.
Someone mentioned that the Mugrabis are involved in his market. That reminded me of the Robert Hughes documentary: The Mona Lisa Curse where he skewers one of the younger Mugrabis when interviewing him about their Warhols etc. Hilarious (and depressing) but essential viewing. If you want to understand how the high end art market evolved, then I can't recommend watching this enough.

I'm 1000% positive people who own Warhols also own KAWS haha. I've been looking to add an entry level Warhol print to my collection, don't need to be a millionaire.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by abacus on Mar 11, 2019 19:09:07 GMT 1, No, its another one, made by Channel 4 in the Uk in 2008. It used to be on Youtube but have disappeared which is interesting in itself :-) You can read about it on Mark Vallen's blog
art-for-a-change.com/blog/2009/11/the-mona-lisa-curse.html
Very interesting blog in general btw. He also provides a link to apparently the only place where you can watch it... Funnily enough it was broadcast on the 18th September 2008, which was 3 days after Lehmans went down (and Hirst had his Sothebys auction).

In all honesty, if I had the kind of money to own a few originals and a 8' Chum or Companion, I doubt I'd be sharing them on IG, if I had that kind of money I'd be doing my own thing very discretely out of the public eye. I've seen plenty of Nice pieces and collections that never hit the public eye that are not rappers or sports stars.
In addition to that, I know people who have boughten pieces that literally have verbiage in contracts that say they cannot sell for years and they're not allowed to post pictures of the pieces.

They are being sarcastic, because @markiemark wrote some stuff that shows that they didn't do their homework. Really! Kaws market "reeling"?, by Express Post on Mar 15, 2019 13:03:54 GMT 1, You are entitled to dislike the work.
When it comes to millionaire/billionaire collectors that are not rappers or athletes, two examples are Nazeem the architect and the Marciano foundation - says so on their website. marcianoartfoundation.org/about/collection/
Use Google to find out more.
This is the homework I was referring to that you didn't do. There are actually minimum 10 more supercollectors that own Kaws and other great artists and all you have to do is go on instagram to find them. They may not own Warhol and Pollock, but they have a solid collection of Contemporary artists.
Peace

Kaws market "reeling"?, by ca on Mar 15, 2019 16:43:56 GMT 1, It'll be interesting to see what happens when the sneaker/hypebeast crowds move to something else. At the end of the day, they are "trend hoppers" and although they might not be the crowd buying the expensive stuff, they've been somewhat responsible behind the last 2-3 years push of Kaws on social medias and whatnot. That IMO resulted in fortunate individuals with no taste purchasing expensive pieces thinking its cool and further driving the market to where it is.

They've certainly been driving Kaws's Open Edition market... if you can call it that!

Similar with art but throw in the hypebeast crowd who try anything to make an extra buck and you create a beanie baby frenzy over products that should be. I know in the Pez thread I've poked fun at all those who ended up with Mirage and look how many are sitting. Some barely making it out for profit when someone decides to do an auction. Eventually those others pieces will have to be sold for less than cost or they will just sit in a file.
For me, Kaws he is flooding his own market with the same junk. People will get over the same character in a different pose or realize they paid $300+ for an enormous run of a manufactured toy.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by nobokov on Mar 15, 2019 17:47:12 GMT 1, Now seems to be the best time for Kaws to cash in by releasing as many toys as he can before his commercial market is played. You gotta take advantage of fools while theyre still out in full force wearing oversized clothing in clownish colors, strutting about posing for selfies in front of brightly colored walls. It's pretty impressive to see him fool all income levels into thinking that they're cool for owning his wares. Once the hypebeasters have grown up or moved on to the next thing, there's still the ultrawealthy who buy to impress.
