Kaws market "reeling"?, by Express Post on Mar 17, 2019 1:41:41 GMT 1, Did the China bubble burst? I felt that prices plateaued at auction. The big name artists from the political pop and cynical realism movements are still doing a roaring trade at the primary level.
Kaws paintings have contracts attached to them, so it is more controlled than before. Anyone that bought the Condo droopy dog, it came with a contract that restricted reselling.
There is a lot of money out there to keep this going. He is one of the chosen ones. ย Was it Chinese contemporary art that was all the rage at auctions before Urban art took off. Dealers going to China looking for contemporary artists and buying up paintings etc and bidding theprices up at auction to record figures. I think some dealer paid 30 K for a painting and it made something like 600 K re sold at auction. That bubble burst. ย ย Kaws built up a following with his garage kits a long time ago. Back when people were making vinyl and resin knock offs of Batman and Disney etc figures in garages and selling them to toy colelctors in similar ways that Expressobongobeansontoast forum has lots of people collecting fan art versions of movie and music posters to flip. ย ย Urban art took off and Kaws saw the potential to get into the urban art gallery scene and his garage vinyl figures just got sold by gallerists to people with a bit more money in 2D format as paintings and prints and as larger versions of his figures and marketed at auction and sold to even more wealthy investors who probably have no clue as to what they are buying but don't care cos they are rich and Kaws is the thing to buy to appear up to date and kool. ย ย

Kaws market "reeling"?, by Express Post on Mar 17, 2019 4:30:08 GMT 1, I didn't think that they would enforce the contract on such a small scale. When you hit big numbers like originals, it is more feasible to get the lawyers involved.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by Deleted on Mar 17, 2019 11:40:25 GMT 1, except George Condo doesn't churn out limited editions in their thousands, does he? He doesn't have to. He makes a good living from ripping off Picasso. Condo is to Picasso what Kaws is to Disney. If you are going to emulate somebody, I think we can safely say it is better to emulate Picasso than Disney.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by Hairbland on Mar 17, 2019 12:37:07 GMT 1, I agree that the Kaws canvases will continue to be desirable, but I think that all of the large/open edition dolls and objects will become unsellable. Weโll see, right? After all you are referencing toys for the most part.

From that response I think you know very little about Picasso's art through the decades. Condo has clearly ripped off quite a few of Picasso drawings and other art.
I agree that Condos own bastardised Picasso like ugly daubings can be said to be his own creations. Condo references Picasso and Picasso was influenced by African art.
Condo rips off Dali too at times.
Some examples here. www.artsy.net/artist/george-condo

I think Condo just ripped off Picasso and Dali in some artworks and has been making his own version of Picasso's portraits etc. It's easy enough to do. Just look at Picasso painting sin books and then put the books away and try to paint your own version in Picasso's style and you always end up with something vauguely resembling Picasso on meths.
Without African art there would be no Picasso that we know today. Picasso was inspired by it and made art that reflects it without stealing it. Condo just mimicks Picasso and wants to be (at auction anyway) the new Picasso.

He went to NYCโs School of Visual Arts...SVA is well known. In the early 90s he began his practice of โsubversionโ by taking the ads out of bus stops phone booths etc (he got the odd key the MTA uses) painting weird things on the ads then putting them back. Note this was a great time for NYC graffiti, following the strong 80s. After graduating with a BA in Fine Art he did work for Disney as a freelance animator - painting backgrounds. Not really โworking for Disneyโ.
He was given the opportunity to create toys, called in some shops โadult vinylโ at the time, for the Japanese market - which was and remains crazy for this type of thing. This had nothing to do with Disney. Giant Robot, and then Kid Robot, became popular in the US, creating a market for his toys in the US. I lived in Brooklyn and would buy directly from his studio, and there was a Stussy store in Soho that had been an early supporter (because he is the real deal) that few knew of and where his stuff could be bought at same price after selling out on his site.
Itโs fine if people want to complain about his prices now, that just means you missed out by not being there early. For you he now makes open editions so you can have something. Donโt complain.

There again I ain't no Hick Hock Big Cock. ย Your bias against Banksy and KAWS is well known, as such you would be better off supporting your argument with facts rather than falsehoods projected from an emotional point of view.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by Hairbland on Mar 24, 2019 8:52:29 GMT 1, Wait for April 1 to see where his market is at. No point talking about it now. Y'all have a blessed day. itโll b just as strong n a week or 2 as itโs ever been, or better imo.... the great thing about forums/blogs is we can revisit this thread later n chop it up on who was right/wrong n why/how it all went!!!! โ๐ป&โค๏ธ I believe expresspost is referring to April Fools Day. It looks like youโre new, welcome to the party - this KAWS discussion / argument with fans, non-fans and those that argue for the lack of anything better to do happens at least 3-4 times a year.
I believe KAWS has had some of the best growth of museum shows and galleries representing him. That would make a decline unlikely imho.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by Wrinkled Brain on Mar 27, 2019 20:19:35 GMT 1, Thank you for this. Good to finally see facts in this thread... Kind of like the old days when most collectors knew what they were talking about.
KAWS (it is KAWS, not Kaws - it was his graffiti tag) grew up in New Jersey and started tagging as a teenager.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by avec art on Mar 30, 2019 15:23:32 GMT 1, Seems he was commissioned by Disney to assist on a number of projects. So while not necessarily under the direct employ of Disney corp. he was doing work for them ie. working for them. But fair enough for Hairbland to point this detail out. However the reason for it being brought up in the first place are the implications this had further down the road. Disrupting popular cartoon characters by actually intervening with consent if not collaboration.

Kaws market "reeling"?, by Hairbland on Mar 31, 2019 12:37:42 GMT 1, 2a. He started out painting for Disney as a day job Yes, as a freelancer fresh out of art school painting backgrounds for Jumbo Animation, bought by Disney.
I am unable to find a collaboration with Disney that was authorized before 2010. He did his graffiti while in high school and college, graduating in 1996.
Around the same time he did some Disney stuff Disney was looking to hit the refresh button, and had created a fake Dunny rip off with many other street artists so it is not surprising they would have looked to him as his toys were white hot. paddle8.com/editorial/8-things-to-know-about-kaws/

Kaws market "reeling"?, by ullke๐พ on Mar 31, 2019 14:51:29 GMT 1, itโll b just as strong n a week or 2 as itโs ever been, or better imo.... the great thing about forums/blogs is we can revisit this thread later n chop it up on who was right/wrong n why/how it all went!!!!
More likely he's referencing the big auction with 40+ Kaws canvases on April the 1st. www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/2019/nigoldeneye-volume-one-hk0912.html?locale=en
