Local Elections 2019, by Deleted on May 1, 2019 11:12:20 GMT 1, I just hope people use their vote appropriately. It is NOT about wanting to kick the Tories out of office. Neither is it about voting UKIP because you want to leave the EU. Local elections are a very different beast to general elections.

I completely agree, however thatโs not how a lot of people view how politics work these days. Itโs a shame as a lot of very committed local counsellors will be impacted by the wider mess raging at Westminster.

There are 343 councils in England.
They provide a wide range of services, depending on their shape and size.
These include housing, road maintenance, parking, rubbish collection, libraries, regulation of local business, leisure and cultural facilities, parks and public places, school funding and admissions, environmental health, planning, local transport and social services.
The largest local authorities are also responsible for adult social care and children's services.
Councillors are elected to sit on these councils and represent people in a specific geographical area for a fixed term of four years.

I am disenfranchised due to what I consider to be Tory run council financial incompetence. I am not at all happy about not having the opportunity to vote. No elections in Northampton as the skint council canโt afford to run them. Never heard of that happening before.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-northamptonshire-47967416?intlink_from_url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/localnews/2641430-northampton/5&link_location=live-reporting-story
โElections were due at all of the other councils, but because of the county council's crisis Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said polls "would involve significant costs that would be hard to justify" and they have been cancelled.โ

Local Elections 2019, by Deleted on May 3, 2019 12:05:54 GMT 1, The Tories suffered really badly, as expected, but surprisingly, Labour also did badly. The LibDems were the overall winners in this election which I was pleased about. It just goes to show that most people don't like extreme politics, on the left or the right.

They are trying too hard to please Labour Brexiters and Labour Remainers at the same time. The most interesting thing about the results is not that the Tories lost out big time but that Labour did not pick up all those Tory losses. In fact, they didn't pick up any of them!

Local Elections 2019, by rebate on May 3, 2019 13:31:58 GMT 1, Less than half the results are in so far. The sceptic in me thinks the "safer" tory gains may have been counted fast. But that dubious theory aside, there is a lot that could happen before teatime rolls round.
Tory losses at 550 now, thats a hard loss for sure, and going to get much worse and maybe top the 1000 they were predicting for the sake of later damage limitation. Not what id like to see for labour so far, but i dont think thats going to remain the case as they seem to be gaining a few now. Lib dems have picked up a lot of seats but what seems like very few councils.
Still all to play for in the second half, but its fair to say the tory fans are probably leaving the stands (complimentary corporate hospitality suites) and heading for the train.

Local Elections 2019, by Deleted on May 3, 2019 15:21:49 GMT 1, The Tories have now lost over 800 councillors. Labour have lost 85 91. In normal political times, a 800 Tory loss would equate to about 700 Labour gains. You can understand the Tory losses due to the Brexit fiasco. But what's Labour's excuse for not picking up the Tory losses?

Local Elections 2019, by k2 on May 3, 2019 16:24:09 GMT 1, Politicians I've seen interviewed today seem to be describing these results as the public demonstrating that they are sick of Brexit and wanting them to just 'get on with it'. But with poor results for the Tories, Labour and UKIP, and strong results for the Lib Dems and the Greens, it seems like the public would rather that we didn't 'get on with it' at all.

Personally I think itโs because labour voters, whether leavers or remainers, are not happy with the way labour have handled themselves in parliament regarding Brexit. As a life long labour voter and a remainer Iโm certainly not happy.

According to the BBC if this was a general election turn out, this would put both the Conservative and Labour on 28% each.

In trying not to commit one way or the other, and possibly alienating one half of their base, they're left pleasing no-one. Same is probably true for the Tories too.
This Brexit thing is so horribly divisive - we now have the same Labour / Tory split that we've always had, but within each party we now have an additional split with both sides of the argument fundamentally disagreeing with each other.

Local Elections 2019, by .dappy on May 3, 2019 18:41:57 GMT 1, Labour has suffered a net loss of council seats - starting from the low base of 2015 in many cases.
The Conservatives have lost around 10 times as many councillors, but what is remarkable is that the main party of opposition - around the mid-term of a not-very-popular government - has not made net gains.
Conservative Seats 3526 Loss -1305
