Hammer Price with Buyer's Premium: 25,000 USD wow I thought it would do more, after all 'hold up' made ยฃ21,000, where as this, which imo is a better image made a mere ยฃ16,500. Perhaps the Tate aspect swung it?
It's still a lot though, Hold Up is a cool image and like you said the Tate aspect might have swung it

i agree, just found the image of the piece, small and not his best, though i thought it might have sold for $8000 though , but i guess the reserve was at the lower end of the estimate.

Should have been $5000-$7000 to give it a chance. But saying that with an estimate so low it wouldn't have made it into this sale!

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by snausages on May 13, 2009 22:26:04 GMT 1, Wow, strong results at Sothebys overall.
I checked out Sale Ends while it was on preview, in person I was actually surprised by how shoddy it looked. The primer/gesso on the canvas was really sloppy. And the red that filled in the block was all mottled in texture, not the solid block of red I was expecting. But a great result for B man.
I'm surprised about the JR, I think his work is nice but this photo was packaged up very slick in a frame and seemed really removed from the idea and aesthetic of the art in the photograph.

Wow, I missed the boat on this guy. Paintings from this series went from about 50 - 100 - 300k + in about a year. www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?lot_id=159535276
I think recent auction results goes to show that the rich stay rich and the poor get poorer. The people that have this kind of money to spend are still treating themselves very much. I think the low end of the markets is going to take the longest to recover. 5k is a lot bigger deal to an average joe than 500k is for the wealthy.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by snausages on May 13, 2009 22:57:56 GMT 1, that blow me is uninspiring - Takes all kinds of opinons. But the guy is big time now. I doubted it a year ago but that's an unquestionable result. I felt similarly too about this series until I saw it in person, really well executed, and an interesting part of his oeuvre considering a lot of it is (purposefully) sloppy and dirty looking.

And the red that filled in the block was all mottled in texture, not the solid block of red I was expecting.... there is always the poss that the piece was guaranteed and rather than Sotherbys pass it - buy it in ... just a thought. A good price on the JR I think and a genuine strong price on the shep. Sold originally for approx 30k (ยฃ) originally and now someone has paid almost double. It was a large striking canvas mind you. But with an estimate of only 150k? I doubt it was a guarantee in this climate, maybe. But that shep, originally ยฃ30k, that was probably $60k in usd at the time it was sold. Which is about how much the seller probably takes home. But if you got millions I guess 80k is a fair gamble to pick it up and hold it for 10-20 yrs and cross your fingers. Piece means nothing to me but it is slick and fine execution.
Funny thing is I overheard the Sothebys Sales associates stressing out about getting their clients to shell out for this auction. No more worries about layoffs for now I guess.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by lee3 on May 13, 2009 23:21:04 GMT 1, I doubt very highly there was any guarantee on anything below $2 million dollars at either Christie's or Sotheby's this go around. The Colen candle is a comparatively small ticket item stuck in the evening sale which is usually a favor to someone. Imho, it is foolish to not have a fair dose of skepticism with regard to that price which is not to suggest that his pricing will not continue to escalate. However, there is a method to the madness in NY.
Looking forward to the main event for May which kicks off in about an hour.

However, there is a method to the madness in NY. I'm always skeptical, but small ticket item? If you're collecting Pollock and Basquiat maybe but that is a seriously high price for people who collect young contemporary. I can't believe it was simply schlepped in as a favor and went for 2 or 3x estimates on luck. But certainly being in Sothebys helps, a very similar painting went for half that at PDP couple months back.

The evening sales are dominated by those that are collecting Pollock and Basquiat, not young contemporary.
>>>I can't believe it was simply schlepped in as a favor and went for 2 or 3x estimates on luck. <<<<
Nor am I suggesting that either. However, as 30 something year old artist with his first painting in an evening sale, it is foolish imho to ignore the possibility that there is one or more people with a vested interest to make certain it's a success is my point. Whether you are old or young, $300k is on the cheaper side of the average price in a Sotheby's or Christie's evening May sale and there are plenty of dealers the world over the prop up multi million dollar artists. That was all I meant by having a healthy dose of skepticism with regard to that particular sale price. My comment had nothing to do with the merit of the art itself.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by dynamixx on May 14, 2009 6:16:50 GMT 1, Excellent result on the Sale Ends, goes to show very strong images can be capable of outshining even the strongest storms, and desireability undoubtedly increased by lack of UK print edition, not to mention very timely or even prophetic image in the current climate.
Not a bad showing for JR too, remembering this time just two years ago no major auction house would have given him the time of day.
As for the NW bird covered in pink poo not selling, no suprises really.
