Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by pr.yu on Oct 4, 2018 21:12:48 GMT 1, Had my eye on that watercolor from Good Will Hunting. High estimate $1500. I had put in absentee bid for $5500. Went for $72K plus fees! At least it didn't go for $5750.

Yes, it was that one. One of my favorite movies, that was a key scene, and I love Robin Williams. But $72K plus another $18K in fees does seem a BIT much.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by kuni on May 6, 2019 17:18:46 GMT 1, A very strong offering from Sothebyโs. The Joan Mitchell in the Evening auction is the stand out piece for me - simply awe-inspiring. Thanks for posting the links. Strong is an understatement. That Joan Mitchell is next level. I think that de Kooning is my favorite, but the Mitchell and the Untitled Rothko are right up there. I can't imagine what it would be like to live with art like this. Side note - the idea that people buy these pieces and then throw them in a storage unit out of sight is slightly depressing and mind boggling.

Untitled Rothko is stunning (all Rothko are amazing) and completely agree both the Mitchell and Kooning, almost cried thinking about pieces like these getting locked away. also love the untitled Calder

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by irl1 on May 7, 2019 22:13:28 GMT 1, Fascinating article, thanks for posting. Having dabbled in machine learning and neural networks in healthcare robotics, I can see that the software engineer, Mr Devin Liu, has put together a well constructed model. He is also probably going to put a lot of people out of a job in his current capacity as "automating repetitive job functions for large enterprise companies." However, he has not factored in potential buyers reading this article and the impact that may or may not have on biasing the end result. Historically, buyers of deaccessioned pieces are the mega-dealers (Zwirner par examplar) whom make it their raison d'etre to be incredibly well informed. I bet that machine would never have predicted Liverpool to win 4 nil tonight

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by daveart on May 14, 2019 16:25:35 GMT 1, i'll go out on a limb here. i like Kaws, i own some Kaws i think Kaws is great... but his piece in this auction looks embarrassing by comparison to the other art presented. I realize 30 years ago someone might have said that about the Warhol soup can. it is what it is. The kaws art is fine - what is embarrassing is the bun fight for his work that has this at a reserve of up to $2,000,000 .. the top end of this scene is lost in a sea of wealth

Youโve got legit works by Calder, Mitchell, Warhol, Kusama, Grotjahn in this ballpark, and youโre really going to choose a smurf eating a hot dog? Even if I had no idea who the artist was behind any of these works, Iโd still be moved by the Mitchell of that Cecily Brown even if it was done by some totally unknown artist.
Like you said though, these buyers have more money than they know what to do with, and Kaws has more hype than nearly any artist at the moment, so it is what it is.
Also, I may just be bitter because I missed out on the MOCAD print.

Lol a bit dramatic no? Itโs just art, kaws owes you and us nothing Its a bit of a kick in the teeth for anyone that was supporting him from the start, no he owes me noting. If you've been supporting him from the start, you probably have a pretty killer collection. So kudos to you.
I guess what you're grappling with is kind of like a musician becoming a global star and no longer being able to see them in the 100 person club. right?
I think the rate at which he is cranking stuff out, to me, is off-putting. Just look at all those hypebeasts posers on the FB group who are obsessed with market value, yet pretend to have a deep vested interest in the art itself. All-in-all, I still think the recognition Kaws has earned is well deserved and something we should all be happy about as it further legitimizes a scene that was long viewed as vandalism, sophomoric and trash by the art elites.

No KAWS was never my thing. I know a few mad into him right from the start. Its KAWS this KAWS that and why can't he release another print they can buy. My answer is always move on there are loads of other artists out there. I agree 100% with you about him earning his top spot and fair play to him. Sorry you might have took me up wrong but really apart from the toys and the scrap prints there is noting else a true KAWS fan could buy.
Yes they are for Charity and a good cause but maybe a print a little bit bigger for his fans would have gone down better. I can see some of these MOCAD prints being a real letdown for some. When i was trying to buy one for my daughter i was saying to myself, am i mad buying something i haven't even seen yet.
Its a bit of a kick in the teeth for anyone that was supporting him from the start, no he owes me noting.
Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by daveart on May 15, 2019 14:56:32 GMT 1, Kuni nails it 'Youโve got legit works by Calder, Mitchell, Warhol, Kusama, Grotjahn in this ballpark, and youโre really going to choose a smurf eating a hot dog?'
embarrassing price in an embarrassing setting and i dont think it moves the scene forward. at a Kaws show in 2009 surrounded by other kaws images it looked fine.. and probably sold for 20K back then ? in this setting at this price its not working for me.
Try reading the long auction description all the way through. because all of you look at that and think:
"Engaging and enigmatic in equal measure, KURF (HOT DOG) epitomizes the playful dynamism and sophisticated manipulation of familiar imagery that distinguishes the acclaimed output of KAWS"

At the current price trajectory, a KAWS "Smurf Eats Hotdog" will soon command MORE than an original canvas of similar size than a Mitchell, de Kooning, Kline, Hockney, Richter, etc...artists who have all stood the test of decades. I can't wait to see if works like this from KAWS are held in the same regard as these artists 25 years from now. Like someone else mentioned, people probably said the same thing about Warhol 30 years ago, but damn it just seems crazy to think that this is sustainable and/or not totally artificial.

Sotheby's Art Auctions โข NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ, by Matt on May 15, 2019 16:21:35 GMT 1, Fair point, but also a good deal of survivor bias in that reasoning.
A more relevant angle is to look up who was "blue chip" in the era of Warhol / Basquiat / Haring / Lichtenstein, but has been completely forgotten since
A majority of the artists we talk about here will suffer the same fate

A more relevant angle is to look up who was "blue chip" in the era of Warhol / Basquiat / Haring / Lichtenstein, but has been completely forgotten since A majority of the artists we talk about here will suffer the same fate Agreed, that's an even more interesting and meaningful way to look at it. Anyway to easily run down a list of the artists that were "blue chip" 30 years ago but are now just footnotes in art history? It would be a fascinating exercise.
