Glastonbury Festival, by mutatis on Jun 22, 2017 9:40:15 GMT 1, Clearly Glastonbury means different things to different people. I've noticed and welcome the changes since the 80s when I first went, a time when official numbers were tricky to gauge as half the punters simply walked in or jumped the fence. I'm sure people back then were bemoaning the perceived change to what was ostensibly a hippie festival.
After my first time, I gave it a good few years before I was tempted back in 95 by a Cure, Stone Roses headline and a host of Britpop (Elastica, Oasis, Supergrass), and triphop acts (Tricky and Portishead). Alas the Stone Roses had to pull out, nevertheless it gave Pulp a chance to shine. That year half the crowd must have bunked in and it was gloriously warm and dry I recall.
As for the number of people attending, Glastonbury is clearly a victim of its own success. I seem to remember in 95 Portishead were playing in some small field like the theatre field which was appropriate at the time (Tricky was on the Jazz stage I think) and the whole field was closed and people weren't allowed to enter. In fact, you just could not even get near the field. That was annoying. Fortunately, I hitched a ride on the back of an ambulance as it tried to get through the crowd and thus got into the field and eventually the tent itself due to the good fortune of Evan Dando holding up proceedings before we got to see Portishead, much to the annoyance of everybody around me. Similarly, about 10 years ago Madness played in a little tent in Lost Vagueness, on a stage which was barely big enough for the band. Fortunately, I was backstage and had to meet people there that initially they could not get in because the whole area had been shut off.
I think Glastonbury is far more interesting now than it was when I first went in 89 because it has in a sense devolved responsibility to lot of other organisers so there are loads of mini-festivals within the festival and you don't have to engage with the mainstream stages at all.
I've done the pure music festivals and even been to one's abroad such as Benicassim, but they're all about the music, whereas I would suggest that Glastonbury has so much more to offer. Watching it on the TV, whilst comfy, is no substitute for being there.
All those going this year I hope you have fun, I will. It is what you make of it.

Glastonbury Festival, by Matt on Jun 22, 2017 10:05:32 GMT 1, very well put mutatis
Always so funny to see people saying "it ain't what it used to be"...
You're right it ain't, but that doesn't mean that what it is isn't still appealing to a lot of people, and you can hardly blame a festival for bringing joy and amusement to a large number of folks.
Saying "it was better back in the day" mostly shows how much of an old fart you are, oblivious to the fact that there are new festivals / happenings popping up all over the world, but you've not heard about them because you're too busy typing about how nostalgia ain't what it used to be
A more interesting angle to this "ain't what it used to be" debate is whether any form of counterculture can survive without being absorbed by consumerism, and merchandising. I would strongly advise reading Debord's "Sociรฉtรฉ du spectacle" (am sure it has been translated) on this.
Will also be very useful and though provoking for those who like to say this place ain't what it used to be

It's a fair point. I apologise for any negativity on my part. It might be fairer to say that I ain't what I used to be! Still have many great memories. Rarely saw any bands. One year I saw half of the polyphonic spree set, and that was it. My lasting memory of it was that it was like a small town, weird and wonderful, plonked in the middle of the countryside, where pretty much anything goes.

Not at all. I accept that I am conservative (little C!), insomuch as I don't care for change. So to an extent I do rue the festival being different, bigger, etc. But I also accept that I have changed, got older, grumpier, etc. So the apology was genuine. I genuinely hope everyone there has a sick time (youth parlance!).

Glastonbury Festival, by dotdot on Jun 22, 2017 15:32:43 GMT 1, Everyone was young once - some pretend to be young forever - they generally pop it at 27.
Why bother to be cool or sick or savage when you can follow it 'all' on your phone.
Ah - the smart generation , much prefer the Beaten Generation, of course.
..more up and coming...
