What have art sales enabled you to buy? , by JockoLad on Jul 30, 2019 17:08:03 GMT 1, I feel extremely lucky to have become aware of POW/Banksy/Urban Art before the rest of the World found out. Early on I bought prints and other bits and bobs that have since increased in value. I have kept a lot but equally have sold things when the need has arisen.
What I’d be interested to find out is what you have been able to buy/do as a consequence of your art sales?
I have still got my big ticket items on the walls however to date have managed to:
- Buy a quality set of swings for my kids by selling 10 British Museum Banksy postcards. - Sold a print to add a decent amount toward a house deposit. - Sold Banksy posters bought for £10 at source to finance a family holiday. - Paid off credit card debts thanks to Paul Insect, Snik and Pure Evil.
Growing up I hadn’t appreciated that money could be made via buying and selling art. It has all come as a lovely surprise and has brought me great joy over the last decade or so. I should add that I will likely look to sell up at some point in order to put a decent amount toward extending my house - it honestly blows my mind that something bought for £100-£500 at source can now enable me to somewhat improve the quality of my life.
I should say that I would never have got into Urban Art had a guy called Jasper not asked me if I’d heard about Banksy whilst walking between lectures at Edinburgh University in 2006. I went online the same day and regret not buying everything that POW had on offer - I’d be living mortgage free had I only known what lay ahead!
Look forward to hearing of the luck that other forum members have had over the years.

What have art sales enabled you to buy? , by JockoLad on Jul 30, 2019 19:20:17 GMT 1, Personal capital gains allowance has ensured that all profits were within tax limits. Being genuine, if I’m wrong about this I would appreciate advice.
Everyone laughed about the Museum postcards being limited. The moment they stopped selling they were worth a fair bit more. Sold a few to Japan and a bundle to someone in France.
As for the posters, I went through a phase of buying them in bulk on POW and then selling them on eBay for a profit. People didn’t realise they were still available at source.
I appreciate that people on the forum get frustrated with ‘flippers’ but it’s been a part of the urban art scene since it first emerged. Turning point that I remember was when Banksy CYW were released and people in the queue were pushed out of the way by gangsters or suchlike when the doors opened. I think some additional prints were released as a form of apology.
Anyway, still interested to hear what art sales have enabled people to buy/do.
As an aside, my favourite purchase was an original Nick Walker Headless Astronaut. Probably the artwork that has gained the least and would struggle to sell the most. Love it to bits.

What have art sales enabled you to buy? , by JockoLad on Jul 30, 2019 19:24:00 GMT 1, I know people love to get stuck into one another on here but nobody in the mid-2000s has any idea of what lay ahead. There must be a load of people on here who have extremely valuable art collections that they bought for very little just over a decade ago. I’m just interested to find out who has stuck with the art and who has gone on to use their gains to do something else.
I’m away to smoke a £50 note.

Clearly got into the urban art scene early with an attitude like that. Sale of an original Girl With Balloon diptych allows you to live like that these days.

What have art sales enabled you to buy? , by robdenice on Jul 30, 2019 20:48:36 GMT 1, About 5 years ago I sold an unsigned Banksy ‘Girl With Balloon’ which I picked up for 85 quid at Art Republic in Brighton when they were first released and put the money towards a handmade rotary DJ mixer (E&S), a print by Dran I’d been lusting after for a long time and a bunch of new furniture we’re still enjoying :-)

That’s brilliant. Hope you are very much enjoying the mixer, furniture and new print. I’m sure the person who bought your print is now enjoying that also.
I remember watching a TV program a while back about the ‘Own Art’ scheme and there was a guy on it who had started collecting art having initially bought a Banksy from Art Republic. If I remember correctly he had sold it and was trading up, commissioning new work for his walls.

What have art sales enabled you to buy? , by urbanflik on Jul 30, 2019 22:11:02 GMT 1, A house refurb and kids education. I personally enjoy collecting art for both investment and my wall and I’ve been lucky enough that the art I have bought out of love has grown in value and enabled me to exchange for more important things.

What have art sales enabled you to buy? , by NYart on Jul 30, 2019 22:25:29 GMT 1, Just enables me to collect for the most part. I’m aggressively middle class and would no way be able collect much more than Obey and the occasional GP print. Flipping sneakers helps that too haha.
Down the road as the collection grows I’m sure I’ll be able to sell and divert funds from collecting and that’s nice if and when necessary.

I’ve got plenty of art that I bought because I love it and not as an investment. Many of my favourite pieces are worth hee-haw but I love them to bits. Being totally honest, I totally speculated with Banksy back in the day and have used his fame to help me buy art that I want to put up on the walls.
I really regret selling Paul Insect ‘The Kid’ and also Dolk ‘Zooicide’ but I was flat broke and had debts to pay. Maybe one day I’ll look to try to buy them again but unlikely as they’ve increased in value somewhat.
Two artists I discovered latterly are John Parkin and his series of falling astronauts (so dynamic) and Ciaran Globel, a Glasgow based sign writer who knocked out a couple of commissions for my children. Globel’s skills are outrageous.

What have art sales enabled you to buy? , by Daniel Silk on Jul 31, 2019 0:50:36 GMT 1, I think it’s healthy for art collectors to buy and sell, so we get older quality pieces popping up ForSale sometimes. People’s tastes change over the years so it good to sell and use those funds to buy something new, keeping the money going back to the artists.
