Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by leader999 on Apr 18, 2008 9:00:39 GMT 1, When you say originals are you meaning canvas's? mine are original from limited 600 edition runs..but they are not signed. Mate, I think that you have prints rather than originals. Originals, in this context, means canvases, sculptures and the like...
Thats what i thought, mate. was just checking. no one had anything authenticated by them then?

Sorry, came across as a bit patronizing- that wasn't my intention. Someone posted a while ago to say that authentication had been refused to a few street pieces (no surprise there). Everything sold at Bonhams this week had been authenticated by them though so it's obviously all up and running. Just sit tight I guess...

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by rains on Apr 18, 2008 10:13:12 GMT 1, Really out of order if he charges anything other than a nominal fee, or they refuse to look at prints, especially with the amount of wedge flowing in his direction, and the fact that authentication actually benefits Mr B.

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 21, 2008 2:16:11 GMT 1, Well they did the authenticate the prints on sale at Bonhams this week so as I said it will be interesting to see if that service is offered up. I agree that it SHOULD be. There are people paying big bucks for these pieces, so theose buyers should be afforded respect and consideration in my opinion. Regarding fees, I don't see why they'd be out of order to charge a reasonable fee (whatever that means). I would hope that any fake pieces are retained and fees waived in that instance. They have a duty to reduce the number of fakes in circulation by any means possible and if you own a piece worth thousands, what's say £50 if it means your piece is more sellable and you have peace of mind?!?! Those are my hopes, but we'll have to see what happens. I understand though that authentication will only be given for pieces that were created for sale (canvases, prints etc) and NOT street pieces. I hope this means people will have trouble selling street pieces and choose to leave them where they are in future - fat chance!

Nice idea but bit tricky. Banksy has stated he doesn't like 'copyright'. Thus how can you retain something when the purchaser bought it in good faith? Compensation? Then we would see them flooded with pieces supposedly bought for thousands. Refusal to grant a COA would be the best way - thus the prints would stay on walls, not resold, or resold with reduced monetary values at least. Be interesting to see. COA's would be the best idea - then people can start insisting sellers get them prior to sale.

They cant keep something you paid for. So you have to post them the print? is that what you are saying? it has upload pictures on the site? truth is no one on here knows what the deal is but everyone likes to think they do or they have their own thoughts how it should be done..so there is not one person on here that has had any reply from them??

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 21, 2008 17:12:19 GMT 1, How could anyone possibly give a genuine and thorough authentication service by photos alone? I think you're forgetting how POW have been doing it in the past. Prints have to be sent or taken in, I can't imagine why that would change! IT may be that photos are just the 1st step to save people sending in inappropriate pieces (street pieces for example or obvious timewasting).
Regarding the "Banksy dislikes copyright" comment, I'm not sure that's grounded in fact and I'd be interested to hear what evidence there is for that, just to better know if it is the case. I saw pictures of an alledged Banksy street piece stating that, but I'm far from convinced it's genuine. Besides the man has alledgedly, recently trademarked his name and tag. I for one had been hoping that the reasoning for this was not to increase his product range, but to protect his buyers from fakes and get rid of much of the spin-off tat we see on ebay because it's unofficial and unlicenced use of his name.
Perhaps someone could enlighten me, but what do authorities do with counterfiet cash? DO they replace it or just take it away, assuming we're talking about the unsuspecting customer who received in in change? What happens to other counterfiet branded products? I was under the impression that as a general rule they can be confiscated, so if I'm right, I don't see why they shouldn't keep fake art. Please correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm no expert and trying to use logic as a base for a legal argument where issues may well be illogical, or the logic lost on me!

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by stevenwhoreking on Apr 21, 2008 17:18:54 GMT 1, if it's fake art they don't confiscate it, they just tell you it's a fake. otherwise the antiques roadshow would need an aircraft hanger to house it all! fake money is just taken out of circulation. if they replaced it then there would be no incentive for shops to refuse it.

POW dont ask you to send the print in. They do it all by e mail. you give the details and they confirm it. I should know i have had a few confirmed this way now. Authorities!! so i bet if you did send in a print or canvas to who ever is behind pest control and they say its a fake i bet they send it back and tell you to contact the seller. They are not going to keep it because you would want to try and get your money back from the seller and you wouldnt be able to do that with out the said piece in hand.

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by guest2 on Apr 21, 2008 17:27:13 GMT 1, ..... I understand though that authentication will only be given for pieces that were created for sale (canvases, prints etc) and NOT street pieces. I hope this means people will have trouble selling street pieces and choose to leave them where they are in future - fat chance!
But what about Think Tank that was in the Bonhams auction. I'm guessing it was not created for resale although it was commissioned so maybe they make an exception for that. Thoughts?

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by Heavyconsumer on Apr 21, 2008 17:30:46 GMT 1, Fair enough, I stand corrected! Personally I would want them to take some responsibility for removing counterfiets from circulation. I'm not sure if there would be any way they could do this. Any ideas?
Regarding POW confirmation, let's backtrack. If you want to varify who the original buyer was then of course they can confirm details, but that is not the same as authenticating the art itself is it? I believe, from previous threads on here, that people have bought fakes, which came with certifiable original owner info', just because that is the case, doesn't mean that the piece itself is genuine. If you want an actual COA, this cannot be provided without them seeing something in the flesh. Likewise it should be possible to issue a COA even if the originl owner info has been lost along the way.

Excellent point. I'm not sure, but I would imagine that services may be more readily available to auction houses than they are to individuals.

Yes that sounds probably about right, the fact that it's being submitted anyway and that it was an official commission allows them to authenticate it. A little bit of a grey area but probably the right choice.

It was listed on lazinc.com, in the FAQs, but I think it was info@pestcontroloffice.com, worth checking though, my memory's like swiss cheese.

Do you own a Banksy original or print? If so we highly encourage you contact Pest Control to have it certified for sale.
The Helium Foundation will no longer be dealing Banksy works without a Pest Control certificate of authenticity and a Pest Control certificate is a staple in any Banksy COA paperwork.

Well that's where Banksy's primary gallery sends people for authentication, so I don't think you should make such an issue out of the trust factor. It seems a bit foolish actually in this instance!

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by gingergit on May 16, 2008 22:39:57 GMT 1, You trusted a gallery with thousands buying an original, may as well trust someone else to verify it for you. If you are in a position to own an original, you are most likely in a position to know who pest control are.

CC info isn't normally handled by the gallery. We see none of our customers CC info.
