Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by savilerogue on Sept 11, 2008 18:06:31 GMT 1, Pest Control does not authenticate street pieces because Banksy prefers street work to remain in situ and building owners tend to become irate when their doors go missing because of a stencil. Since the creation of Pest Control in January 2008 we have identified 89 street pieces falsely attributed to the artist Slight contradiction there.......they don't authenticate street pieces, yet have identified 89 street pieces falsely attributed to the artist. Which in other words means they authenticated them.
I took that to mean that they have received a certain number of authentication enquiries regarding street pieces, none of which were authenticated, but 89 of which were confirmed as fake. Or it could mean that all 89 authentication requests for street pieces were instead confirmed as fakes in line with their attitude to them remaining in situ.
137 prints though - bloody hell!

Cue angry mobs saying street art is for the streets, history of street art says otherwise though

Moral rights on illegal street art? Even for you, you must admit that's one hell of an interesting juxtaposition?
My point was that considering many people would have the public believe Vermin are infact the devil incarnate, that they actually presented a fair argument for what they are doing
On the other side of the coin, how many of the 137 prints (so far) have origins that can be traced back to original source? I remember 3 statements last year from POW regarding ex-employees and dodgy prints, each statement contradicted the previous one

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by anorak on Sept 11, 2008 19:54:22 GMT 1, For those who don't know - A definition of Droit Morale is: "An artist's moral right to be identified as the creator of a work (Attribution), the right to decide when and where to publish the work (Disclosure), the right to withdraw a work from circulation (Withdrawal), and the right to preserve the integrity of the work (Integrity)." The work being 'illegal' has no relevance on the fact that any living artist has the right to withdraw a work from circulation and to assign an official body to authenticate work. Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by stickee on Sept 11, 2008 19:56:20 GMT 1, 89 street pieces and 137 screen prints seems like a very high number to me and no figures on how many they have confirmed to be genuine....who's to say that this is not just scaremongering to get £50 off you guys? no mention of any fake stencilled canvases either (which I would of assumed would of been the number one fake as most people can make a stencilled canvas where as a screenprint is a bit more specialised

I've just had an interesting (and rather frustrating) conflict of interest that centred around above, with another artist (not Banksy). For me the difficulty comes when the situation is in the context of installation work, that is done on private property and cannot ever be considered street pieces. As a result never for the public to see, this for me has the same resonance and relavance as any other work that the artist exectues. Also within the context of street artists it is madness for their to be no authenticated "street"work in collections of street artists, otherwise you only have half the picture. I also feel that whilst it is wrong to remove work from the street, if you own the building / door / wall that the artist decided to work on, they then have a responsibilty to subsequantly authenticate said work for that owner, should they want to sell. To deny knowledge after defacing something (however beautifully) is done completly at the expense of the person who'se property it is on. Whilst most on here would welcome Banksy to come and work on their home, would you welcome every street artist? I know I wouldn't - I feel that there is an inherant hypocracy of wanting to elicit an emotional reaction and then refuse to take responsibilty for it. I understand that artists do not want to get arrested, but I am more talking about work done in private that at a later point is denied (I think this may have happened with the Blur album wall, but could be wrong). Is this down to the artists? Or is this down to primary galleries advising their artists? I feel it's a bit of both.

I don't think that's the way they operate. Pest Control will send a standard response to the person asking for an authentication request for a street piece saying something along the lines of 'We do not authenticate street pieces'. Then Pest Control will keep a log of obvious fakes for their own record-keeping purposes, without giving any further information to the owner.

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by junkieart on Sept 11, 2008 20:54:24 GMT 1, It annoys me that they charge £50 for each print, I personally have 5 prints brought from source some worth more than others. I have email conformation from Dora on all the pieces why should I pay £250 if I wish to sell them (hopefully I won't)? Also I just purchased the penny print from POW and still they don't do COA!! Why?? BRP do this well and they won't need to set up a PC for Nick etc. Why won't POW do this now?? Its not that hard!

Did I say they were scaremongering? ...no I put across the point of a devil's advocate and when did I mention Banksy? I didnt I said pest control. I just find it strange that there is no mention of sucessful validation figures for people to compare it to, for example "we have found 137 screenprints fake but 1000 genuine prints"

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by slacker on Sept 11, 2008 22:10:42 GMT 1, how many on here have submitted print details to pest control and found out that the print was fake?
i would have expected there to be a decent proportion of the 137 on here. i know that there have been people on here who have discovered their prints were fake but i haven't noticed anybody saying that it was discovered while the prints were being authenticated by pest control.
is there anything to stop the person offloading on here in that situation? is that why there haven't been any/many examples?

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by aginghippie on Sept 11, 2008 22:13:32 GMT 1, My point was that considering many people would have the public believe Vermin are in fact the devil incarnate, that they actually presented a fair argument for what they are doing It's a free market and if Vermin can find mugs to buy their verification more power to them, but you have to be an idiot to buy a Vermin verified work. Unless it has rock hard provenance (the artist has acknowledged production of the work) you are going to have real problems if you ever try and sell it. If you just like the piece and never intend to sell it then the authentication is irrelevant anyway.

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by graeme501 on Sept 11, 2008 22:23:49 GMT 1, as long as all the pieces that get the vermin COA are rock solid proven to be authentic via photo's, being very well known, the people selling, then there will be people that are interested in these works, the problem will arise if vermin authenticate a piece that is then proven to be a fake, then all their COA's will be worthless

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by Dr Bastard on Sept 11, 2008 22:37:11 GMT 1, I've emailed pest control a couple times. Exerts from the emails are below.
I did notice that they items from ebay I sent them got shill bid up to ridiculous prices. I figured they did this themselves to annoy the seller. I now know not to bother them with street pieces or anti war signs, they will not authenticate at all.
Hello, Thank you for your authentication request. None of the pieces in the images provided would receive a Letter of Authentication. The top four are not by the artist Banksy. They will be registered as fake. The 'Wrong War' piece cannot be submitted for authentication because it was not made with the intention to sell as a work of art. It was made for an anti-war protest. Further to this there are a number of fakes in circulation and it can not be verified without bringing it in.
Thank you for submitting your authentication request. There are a huge number of fake street pieces in circulation and the piece would need to be looked at 'in the flesh' to verify it being genuine. However pieces taken from the street are not considered works of art, the artist believes they should remain in their context and they were not created with the intention to commercially sell. Therefore street pieces are not granted authentication for sale. Kind regards Pest Control

Pest Control COA • Banksy Print Authentication, by icky on Sept 11, 2008 22:51:17 GMT 1, I wonder what they do with fake prints that are in their hands. Is it legal for them to destroy them?
I think the Warhol authentication board mark prints not approved by them with a stamp. And that it's one of the conditions if they are to take one in for consideration that they may do that.

Controversially its allegedly rumored they have a vested interest due to the extent of their own collection of Warhol pieces.

i'm sure somebody (a gallery?) was selling a banksy print on here a while ago which he had bought but it turned out to be a fake.
he had it checked by pow (i think) and they agreed to return it as long as they could use a hole punch on it to signify that it was a fake. he was trying to recoup some of the costs by selling it as a fake but ebay kept removing the listing i seem to recall.
that was a print which was taken in for them to check. i can't see what could be done with one which was submitted for authentication via some details/pictures ala pest control.
