Banksy Welcome Mat, by Gentle Mental on Oct 8, 2020 4:07:15 GMT 1, Why arenโt all batches sewn? Or tagged?
It canโt be a cost issue or a technical issue - as 500 were made at 500 pounds each - with no apparent problem.
Canโt be a time issue - The tag version is taking as long as they like.
Production didnโt dramatically get ramped up with the tag version.
My thinking is - itโs an artistic choice.
So why the switch, Mr Banksy?

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Gentle Mental on Oct 8, 2020 4:41:32 GMT 1, same same but different.
So far the only measurable difference is financial... possibly 2x resale value of a tag one?
And i think - as with all unsigned 500 banksy eds - the first batch will rise - as more and more tag versions are released.
unless the sewn tag returns and everything gets reset again.
anything is possible.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Daylight Robber on Oct 8, 2020 7:22:47 GMT 1, Can advise that your guesswork is a little bit out. The numbering on the 1st batch definitely starts below 80. the number 80 was used as an example to make the point that the second edition didnโt follow-on the numbering from the first edition. Basically the two runs are numbered separately the second edition numbering doesnโt follow on where the first edition ended. Thatโs why some from the second edition are numbered below 500 and some from the first above 500. lets be honest these were available for over an hour on the first day of going on sale as most people didnโt see any flip potential. Now suddenly everyone is buying these โfor the right reasonsโ and it has nothing to do with the fact they sell for 4x cost. I donโt own one but Iโm glad Banksy changed the tag to differentiate between the first and later editions. People claiming they are the same are more than likely the ones who bought the later editions. Donโt take my word for it go back and look at the original thread for the welcome mats most werenโt interested.
Sorry. I thought you were guessing which no. the 1st batch started at. Was trying to help refine things as my mat in numbered a bit lower.
I'd say that I, like plenty of others did buy for the 'right' reasons and probably couldn't care less how the label is attached because we have no intention of selling.
If you look back, one of the reasons these sat is because of the uncertainty of how GDP worked. There was a lot of confusion as to whether buying a mat would disqualify you from being selected for anything else. A large percentage of batch 1 owners took a punt that you could, happy in the knowledge that the guaranteed piece was the one it was.

Yep, I have one from the first batch (slightly > 500) that has white zipper along the tail. My other first batch mat (<250) has black, and the lettering is slightly less "aesthetically pleasing" but still great.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by ajr on Oct 8, 2020 10:41:49 GMT 1, People who didn't get the first batch trying to talk them down to pick up cheap or flip, despite having had about an hour to get one on release if they really wanted one. This was centrepiece of GDP show with a strong visual message in my opinion and is totally underrated. Of course there is a difference, albeit they have the same image. First batch is much more "crude" in production. Nothing is "unlimited". And no, it's not just a mat.
Usual forum behaviour by some.
Like the GDP free prints that were tat and worthless.

I agree, but in equal measures some are also trying to talk up the first batch. Just look at the title of this thread that has now caused this discussion. As far as I'm aware, there is no 'first edition' mentioned anywhere by love welcomes, gdp or banksy There are 1st,2nd,3rd...batches of an open edition until they are discontinued.

Typical forum behaviour sadly. It's been happening for years and it's quite often the same people doing it. I noticed the usual crowd have invented a first edition box set too. First edition my ass.

Same edition , just change to variations A few are caught up in the latest hype and want to add value by making such statements

Yeah. Your right, batches is a better word than edition. Makes sense, motion carried

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Pawel on Oct 8, 2020 11:28:39 GMT 1, The only reason to distinguish between the batches is the tag placement.
The ones from later batches (at least the ones, I've seen) look cleaner and easier to read than the one I got from the first batch, but not sure if this applies for them all. All this discussion is a waste of time

And I have one from the 1st batch which originally said Welome or more probably Welocme before it was redone to barely say Welcome. Judging it purely on aesthetics, it's not the best. As a work of art with a powerful message and backstory, I wouldn't swap it for any other.

We all have a slight quirkiness to be on an art forum debating the finer peculiarities of details of our hobbies but sometimes a few get too caught up and need a guide to view differently to their perspective
Strange to see a few members here that complain about flipping have more than one ?

Banksy Welcome Mat, by churchwood on Oct 8, 2020 15:35:10 GMT 1, Iโm a first edition owner.. I canโt believe this discussion. First edition are holy grail, rocking horse shit, pot of gold business. The other matts are for wiping feet. Mine is also available to swap for any banksy print ๐ And people are using hairdryers to remove stickers of the ยฃ1.99 Peckham rocks and placing on a sheet for provenance ๐ฅด Some posters should let their non art fan work colleagues read some of these threads to get a better perspective eh? sorry to derail thread but why don't they just leave them stuck on the back as they were?
