Martin Whatson - Passé, by drip on Dec 2, 2019 16:35:03 GMT 1, Agree with Jaylove, just my addition the the 'help the artists' statement above, I went to the recent Stik/Noir signing at the IWM. Nice fella's the pair of them, spent all day signing the cards/posters, charity event. I'm staggered at how many of these items now on eBay? If I was the artist, sitting there making the effort with people, signing cards etc, then if I saw them being sold, that would give me the right hump, and think twice about doing it again. I think it's probably a good idea to only sign items with a dedication (To Jon, etc).

Do you believe they contact artists and offer to split the profits with them 😉? Anyway, best to you.
Just to answer your two questions:
1. If all the prints went to collectors it would be much harder to buy one if you missed the drop (forgot, had to work, whatever). Flippers help some collectors obtain art.
2. They help artists because they guarantee sell outs. This leads to higher prices and more fighting to get the next drop. Flippers are great for artists just like ticket scalpers are great for bands. This is not debatable. More buyers = higher prices and more sales.

If all went to collectors none would come onto the market as they would be bought to display or held long term and would only add to higher prices on the secondary market and later releases to tempt collectors to part onto the market.
hence how on some lotteries / pre sales , galleries do not always sell to regular buyers although they publicly dishone flippers they like the prices they achieve to justify their next release price at higher prices , some print shops even use eBay prices to set prices .
the artist gains long term as increases their sales ,some cases helps produces sell outs on release which could generate 50k-250k gbp in a day .
creates hype and talking point of the artist .

They are all tossers if you have to pay more to see a band or more to collect the artist you like.
So annoying when you try and get a ticket for say Kasabian, miss out on it and then see the touts flogging thousands of them for 3 or 4 times cost . (I got tickets by the way, can't wait)
Also I think the way flippers help a lot is the pumping and dumping of artists, so if I was an artist, slow growth is where it's at, not instant fame with the flippers creating your short term market, produce say 3 prints and your a superstar selling 5 times the price what the first one went for, then 3 years later back working a 9-5 with no market as everyone has been burnt and your prints are worth a 10th of what they sold for

Martin Whatson - Passé, by Hairbland on Jan 14, 2020 14:45:04 GMT 1, Why do people get so upset with flippers? I have not flipped anything but flippers serve two purposes - they let people buy things they miss like me and they help artists. Trust me if artists didn't benefit from flippers and concert holders didn't benefit from scalpers they would eliminate them! If you don't like a flipper just ignore him and dont buy from him. Calling him scum really doesn't do anything productive. After writing that you really don't understand why people on an art forum would be mad at flippers? The flipper automatically blocks real buyers from buying and then forces them to pay a highly inflated price for the same item. Remove flippers and that item gets much cheaper. It is imposible for an artist to ban a flipper. There's a difference between a flipper and someone who resells the item. Flippers are the worst kind. Hate em. I worked in the music biz for over 30 years and everyone hated scalpers, and they still exist. Flippers are a way of life, people should get over it.

You probably do have to accept them on here.
Can give them a hard time though

A tip for anyone else interested in En Pointe by Martin Whatson:
If your budget is modest, note that dozens of snapshots of the actual model for the portrait are also available online. They can therefore be downloaded free of charge.
Notwithstanding Whatson's skills and his uncanny ability to capture likeness, I must admit having mixed feelings about this artwork, as well as the subject matter more generally.
During Michael Jackson's lifetime, the anthropomorphism that Bubbles was subject to always made me uncomfortable — forced to dress in human clothes and (at best) treated like a playmate, if not a photo-opportunity prop.
