Getting my Banksquiat framed. Some urgent questions..., by whatisart on Mar 9, 2020 1:30:19 GMT 1, hey all, dropped my Banksquiat off yesterday but want to make sure i am 100% on how i am handling as this is not only my first Banksy, but my first piece ever.
1. i went with mat as the framer told me that tape needs to be used with floating. that said, i am worried about potential discoloration down the line and i'm not sure if i made the right choice.
2. i went with museum quality glass with UV protection and anti-reflective properties.
3. how do i know/is this fully conservation/archival?
this set me back ~$1,000.
i am kinda worried at this point that i may have jumped the gun. NOT that i had a bad experience at all, quite the opposite. just unsure if i am making the right/informed choices.
thank you!

Getting my Banksquiat framed. Some urgent questions..., by JL Broooks on Mar 9, 2020 2:33:57 GMT 1, Use the power of the forum. Ask for a good NY framer in here, if there is one place there has to be a good one, itโs NY. From your story it all sounds good, except the thing about the tape. If your framer doesnโt know about non-adhesive / fully reversible hinges (that be the โtapeโ) Iโm a bit worried.

They have locations in Manhattan and New Jersey, just check out their IG to see the bangers they frame daily
They can do the highest conservation standards and whatever else you want

They are paper conservation specialist so I would think better than most standard framers

Fingers crossed there will be no mandated fees but better than your print being damaged. Take the advice above with framers.

Getting my Banksquiat framed. Some urgent questions..., by rinz on Mar 9, 2020 10:47:01 GMT 1, 1. i went with mat as the framer told me that tape needs to be used with floating. that said, i am worried about potential discoloration down the line and i'm not sure if i made the right choice. Can anyone answer this? Can you frame it without tape, if you use a mat? And should you worry about the discolour?

Yes discoloration is damage, and value loss.

Yes, by using lineco strips or corners that are attached to the mount board. As the prints are black, I highly doubt there would be any mat burn, but I would always use anti uv glass/acrylic on expensive prints.

Is there a huge risk of discolour? Seems like its either use a mat and get discolour - or use no mat and get tapemarks (if you don't have that japanese stuff)

Getting my Banksquiat framed. Some urgent questions..., by iamzero on Mar 9, 2020 11:59:44 GMT 1, Thatโs what I meant by the correct tape. Japanese mulberry tape and wheat paste hinges have been used for centuries. There are also modern cellulose mixes that are good too. I use Hayaku hinges on nearly everything but there is a strong case for P90 in exception... not on this though.

Getting my Banksquiat framed. Some urgent questions..., by Fantasmes on Mar 9, 2020 12:04:45 GMT 1, For anything important, I like Bark Frameworks in Long Island City. Their First rule to framing anything is โdo no harmโ. Their work is trusted by the likes of the Whitney, blue chip artists, etc etc. Not that much more expensive than your local neighborhood framer for simple jobs, but you can sleep easier leaving it with them. Takes them a bit longer than most tho - like 4 weeks...
OP, this place sounds like a no-brainer if itโs close enough to to you, not that others recommended canโt do the job well.
If you stick with the framer youโre using, do not hesitate to write down your questions and concerns then pick up the phone/go back in and ask. Trust your gut, and the forum.

They also do a ton of work for galleries and artists as well.
Always top notch framer

Thanks. Interestingly this framer was recommended by many on the forum but a few have reached out and rescinded their recommendations

Getting my Banksquiat framed. Some urgent questions..., by trap door on Mar 9, 2020 14:30:05 GMT 1, Take your time mate, you only need to frame it once. Your first quote does sound steep, about 40% more than you should expect to be paying in a major city. Some framers might charge more for security or figure somebody with this kind of asset can pay but even for NYC thatโs a lot. The black textured card Banksquiat is printed on is unlikely to be as acid free as any regular conservation quality mountcard anyway (being black). Mount bleed (orangey halo over time) shouldnโt be an issue either but obviously a 99% UV screening glass or Perspex is a must to stop the exposed image fading or discolouring. The anti glare element will look heaps better on this dark paper so I would opt in for that. Wet paste of any kind may cockle the paper even minimally and I really donโt see any point in floating this, the edge is clean cut and youโll only have to put far more tabs all around the back of the art. A simple hinge at the top only would be a low impact safe bet. Easily removed by a paper restorer (in the eventuality of selling it on). Excited for you, enjoy it when itโs home.
