For anyone interested in Picasso, the British Mesuem are selling a book on the Vollard Suite for a bargainous £5 (paper) and £10 (hardback). I'll try and get a few photos up when I've received it.

'The Faith of Graffiti' was published in 1974 and documents the formative years of New York graffiti.  It was conceived by Mervyn Kurlansky with photos by Jon Naar, but the introduction was written by Norman Mailer (unfortunately, in recent years  Mailer seems to have incorrectly been given the lion's-share of the credit for the book).  The graffiti is rough and raw but the book is well worth a read as these tags and throw-ups are the roots of everything we have today.  Norman Mailer's introduction was later published in Esquire (I've uploaded the article here) and more recently Jon Naar has also published more photos from this period in 'The Birth of Graffiti'





The book was originally going to be called 'Watching My Name Go By' but Mervyn Kurlansky was overruled by the publishers.   However, Kurlansky did use that title for a 1976 BBC documentary which was surprisingly interesting, partly because it let's the writers and other New Yorkers talk for themselves:
