I have this too stoko. It's a V&A book that accompanied their show, of the same title. Cool mix of artists included.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Mar 29, 2016 12:17:35 GMT 1, 'The Faith of Graffiti' was published in 1974 and documents the formative years of New York graffiti. It was conceived by Mervyn Kurlansky with photos by Jon Naar, but the introduction was written by Norman Mailer (unfortunately, in recent years Mailer seems to have incorrectly been given the lion's-share of the credit for the book). The graffiti is rough and raw but the book is well worth a read as these tags and throw-ups are the roots of everything we have today. Norman Mailer's introduction was later published in Esquire (I've uploaded the article here) and more recently Jon Naar has also published more photos from this period in 'The Birth of Graffiti'
The book was originally going to be called 'Watching My Name Go By' but Mervyn Kurlansky was overruled by the publishers. However, Kurlansky did use that title for a 1976 BBC documentary which was surprisingly interesting, partly because it let's the writers and other New Yorkers talk for themselves:

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Apr 4, 2016 20:47:59 GMT 1, 'Banging Your Head Against A Brick Wall' was published in 2001 and was the first street art book I bought. There are too many classic pieces in there to mention but pulling the plug on city hall was always a favourite of mine. It's one of the funniest books that I've read but there's also writing in there that has stayed with me since I first read it 15 years ago, like the account of the downfall of Ceauศescu and the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. The trilogy of little black books was completed by 'Existencilism' and 'Cut It Out' and these three books formed the basis for 'Wall and Piece'.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Apr 11, 2016 20:12:13 GMT 1, 'Arabic Graffiti' was written by Don Karl and Pascal Zoghbi, the former of which was the artist principally responsible for the Homeland hack last year. The book sets out the roots of Arabic graffiti, which owes as much to political struggle, religious belief and a millennia of calligraphy-based art as it does to the graffiti which originated in NY and Philly in the '60s and '70s. The book features the work of l'Atlas, Vincent Abadie Hafex (aka Zepha) and the light-graffiti of Julien Breton. One of the better known artists featured is eL Seed and his book called 'Lost Walls' is a really thoughtful piece of work chronicling his road trip painting walls around his native Tunisia.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Apr 19, 2016 20:27:56 GMT 1, 'Assum Preto' was the catalogue for Os Gรชmeos' 2007 show which had the same name. It's a slim volume but beautifully made; cloth-bound, stitched title and printed on thick paper. The book includes a screenprinted drawing but the real gems in the book are the photos of their more sensual and intimate canvases from the show. If you're looking for a book which covers a wider range of the twin's work then the book which was published to coincide with their ICA show in Boston is worth a look.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Apr 25, 2016 19:29:02 GMT 1, 'Children of the Can' covers the Bristol graffiti scene from its inception with people like 3D, Inkie and Nick Walker in the early 1980s through to the current day. It's written by Felix 'FLX1' Braun who has been painting during the majority of that period and the book definitely benefits from having been written by someone who is a) very knowledgeable about the subject, and b) has lived what they're writing about first hand. In the book, Banksy credits John Nation (who ran the Dugout in Barton Hill) as having had 'more impact on the shape of British culture over the last 20 years than anyone else to come from the city' and you can see lots of John's photos from the 1980s in Walls of Frame.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on May 2, 2016 12:57:47 GMT 1, Thanks for the Jenny Saville recommendation, Coach . I've been looking for a book of her work for a while but, like you say, others are pretty pricey.
The invasion guides are very well known but 'l'Invasion de Paris' is one of my favourite books so I thought it was still worth a mention. I can't think of another artist whose art is as integrated into a city as Invader's work is around Paris. The book documents the first 1000 invaders perfectly; close up and context photos of each piece, maps, background information and stories. There's six full guides in total but for some reason I annoyingly didn't get 'Invasion In The UK' when it was released

Fabulous book. And even more pleasing as it has the etching by blu that I have, in it! Blu for me remains the truest and most talented of all street artists (probably).
