Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by LJCal on Mar 17, 2020 22:29:14 GMT 1, I have a Rampage print myself and was following this with interest, including the pre-auction bids. The 16k hammer price is absolutely absurd and can’t be a genuine result. The print is obviously long since sold out (and I think one of his much better pieces), but any collector with half a brain and some patience could source one of these outside the auction houses for no more than £5-6k tops, and certainly not into five figures. Did anyone see the price go up in real time? (Just to make sure not a typo...) It’s not a typo there were under bidders. It’s a £3k print in my view on a good day with the wind behind it

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by Horatio Nelson on Mar 17, 2020 23:07:47 GMT 1, I saw it at around 3,500 the day before (ex premium), which is what I thought it would sell at.
I was actually getting ready to call up the insurers with updated portfolio valuation as I had three or so pieces which featured in this sale, but I would be an idiot to declare/pay a premium on my Shrigley based on a £16k valuation, because it simply isn't worth that. One of the other prints I have is Hodgkin's Ice, which sold at a very very low price and is probably worth more.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by lv90210 on Mar 23, 2020 11:55:24 GMT 1, Looks like it is now a storage of wealth That makes sense, over the last 3/4 years we've seen different people come into the market, people that are rich.
Dow down 25%, Cable getting f*cked daily isn't going to panic sell these people, I would say what we're seeing at Sothebys is the opposite, they're loading up.
What will be interesting given the levels at Sothebys (although the superior Banksy auction house) already will be where the Forum levels settle tomorrow.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by Poster Bob on Mar 23, 2020 13:30:42 GMT 1, This will be worse than both of them combined
The 2008-2009 recession did cut Banksy print values by more than half, but I guess his position was not a blue-chip artist back then. At the same time, none of the smaller economic / stock market dips since 2010 affected the performance of Banksy prints. Hard to say how the situation will develop, but it’s hard to see that there would be completely no impact as discretionary spend declines and at the same time speculative buyers hold off and wait to see how it moves. My guess would be a flattening our or a small correction that could lay path to sustainable future growth in value. This is more like 9/11, less like 2008-9 Market will recover by the end of the year. heavily indebted companies will be weeded out but such is life.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by Fast Eddie on Mar 23, 2020 15:14:36 GMT 1, Markets are expected to lose 40% relative to February's peak (this is GS forecast). The crisis in the US is at the start of a very steep ascent in the number of cases. US unemployment figures are going to be record-setting bad. Industrial production, probably the same, and not just for a quarter. At least two or three. To me it looks like, now it is not a time to take big risks if you do not absolutely have to.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by esfer on Mar 23, 2020 15:45:09 GMT 1, I am thinking the long term effects of this could hugely change/damage parts of the art market. I think it could include some currently emerging artists going completely away, and some with actual art careers may also take years to recover. Artists who’s pricing was WAY out of whack with their relative output and experience (Javier Calleja as example), might have difficulty maintaining the prices they have quickly rocketed up to in a very short period of time, then taking too long to correct their price point for global recession, thinking they can “wait it out”, using the proceeds of the windfall they received right before this disaster hit, to maintain their lifestyle over until the economy recovers. But if people don’t feel safe spending 5k for a heretofore unknown artist (non blue-chip) artist, those artists careers could suffer greatly, and might never actually recover. Those who do choose art to park their wealth into, will purchase well known bank(sy)able artists, rather than artists who seemed like a great “future” investment prior to the global recession that is sure to hit later this year. I guarantee you the IMF is shi¥¥ing their pants at how bad things are projected to be post Covid 19.
I think the reason people park their money into gold and precious metals is because they are easy to liquidate for the going rate that day....but there isn’t the same kind of globally agreed “going rate” in the art world, there is only the potential price and the actual price something sells for, which is based 100% on what a buyer is willing to pay.
Having said as much, for those with deep and steady pockets, there will soon be art available to buy, some at steep discounts.
I hope I am wrong!

It’s times like this that fortunes are made and lost, if you survive this and buy well over the coming months regardless of the market you’re in you can clean up. Not for everyone but the wealthiest people I know made their money during crisis.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by LJCal on Mar 23, 2020 21:27:02 GMT 1, I do love your optimism, given I have a stack of prints on the block tomorrow I hope you’re right! Saying that the bids on the AP Girl With Balloon do give me some confidence, I’m also surprised Grannies is doing so well so early. A stack. Baller alert! I wish, if they don’t sell I’ll pretty much be ball-less.

Sotheby's Art Auctions • LONDON 🇬🇧, by rbrt on Mar 24, 2020 0:17:03 GMT 1, I noticed in the description of the Di Faced Tenners it states ‘Property from an important private collection’. Has anyone here asked Sotheby’s about that? Or does it mean someone famous is selling it?

Has anyone here asked Sotheby’s about that? Or does it mean someone famous is selling it? Probably although I’m sure they have a broad definition of important. Could be as important as the runner up of the 6th series of big brother.
