Gerhard Richter ๐ฉ๐ช Abstract โข Contemporary Art โข New Relea, by Black Apple Art on Apr 14, 2015 9:08:46 GMT 1, After calling his last high original work bidder "foolish", I wonder what he would think of people buying unsigned 500 edition prints of photos of his work, of which he probably has no idea of their existence.

I think there's a vast difference between the millions spent and the ยฃ1500 which the early p series were sold for from the Serpentine. The sales blurb at the time also indicated that Richter had worked closely with the Serpentine and the print house to produce the prints.
Rather the work goes to as many individuals as possible, than the wealthy few. So I'd like to think that he'd be thinking positively, not that it would influence my decision to purchase.

True on the $ amount. I just personally don't buy process prints of a photograph of a work no matter how much I like the artist. Just seems like many of the qualities I like in collecting are missing. Also when such a piece isn't even signed what connection to the artist is there other than their institutions "endorsement" of it. Personal choice of course. I feel similar with prints from Harrington as well. To me texture, scale and detail are so much of what makes many of these works so amazing. All that aside I do get their appeal to some. Just discussing

On phone so can't post link even if I could find them. Not that I'd try to sway you, but just show you that some of what you say doesn't apply to Richter's P series.
As for the "process prints of a photograph of a work" - I hear you. Personal taste and that. This issue constantly veers its ugly head. I have bought them. I'd prefer a print to have the character of a screen print, but in some instances, the message trumps the medium.
As for signed / unsigned - I envisage a pile of prints some to be signed and the rest left unsigned. Signing takes 10 seconds, if that, per print. In some cases signing might even be carried out by a "stand-in". I never got hung up over signatures and I don't think about the difference in the two as a matter of the artist's connection to the print. Although from what I have read on here in the past, a lot agree with you.
Back in the day unsigned prints were cheaper and still are. Any regrets? No.
