Amoako Boafo print, by nobokov on Dec 16, 2020 23:45:12 GMT 1, Screw it. I pulled the trigger....Its only $5500....I doubt I would get too hurt on this given the supply and demand and the restriction is just on auctions, not private sales. I am sure there are people who will want to own this chap in the next 18 months quite badly. I could buy a bunch of street art prints and the ability to appreciate would be much slower and more speculative. Don't do it. Look how quickly KAWS dropped off and all those people buying prints not long ago thinking that they could immediately unload them at a profit. This edition sale is for the suckers only.

The non-resale agreement is for their protection. They rather not have an embarrassing result at auction that would compromise the artist's market.

Amoako Boafo print, by LJCal on Dec 17, 2020 1:58:17 GMT 1, I'm sorry it's a shit image, his paintings are nice but way too expensive for what they are and for such a young artist. If it was £1000 worth a punt as an investment but this will never ever reach over £5k secondary (purely down to the strength of the image) no matter how high his originals sell for. It's like so many emerging artists, people get FOMO when the value of originals shoot up (and they can't afford them) so go out and buy second rate prints in the hope of making some money but just end with an expensive piece of paper stuck in a folder which they end up hating.

Amoako Boafo print, by LJCal on Dec 17, 2020 2:07:11 GMT 1, Just to give context you can buy Wes Lang, Genieve Figgis, Chloe Wise, Sanya Kantarovsky, Caroline Walker, Tunji Adenyi-Jones and stacks of hot emerging and mid-career artist's prints all for between £500-1000 on release and all are bigger paper sizes with stronger images. Don't waste your money on this.

Our homie has it worked out. Non-resale agreement only applies to auctions, ignores the first right of refusal and can go straight to private sales.

Sure but after shipping and taxes you need someone willing to pay £7000-8000 to make a profit in what is a very small market without being able to openly market. Can't see that happening, anyone buying this to make a quick buck will be disappointed.

Amoako Boafo print, by travispete on Dec 17, 2020 3:01:37 GMT 1, With the exception of Figgis, I dont think those that you mentioned have nearly the complexity in their work as he does. And Figgis multiples are much closer to 6-8k.
I think if you look that the relative values of their originals, its worth the roll. Besides, if he does such limited edition releases, and they sell out in seconds, that tells you something. After all, we all dont love every banksy image.

I bought a Figgis edition for £400 from IMMA this year primary and the one before with Almine Rech was £800 I think. All those artists are excellent painters and most have had six figure auction results.
No doubt a decent print of his could command five figures secondary but this one is a dog and can’t see it ever being worth more than the release price. Similar to Nicolas Party his strong prints are £10k or more secondary whilst some of weaker ones you can buy for less than a grand, I’d say this Baofo will follow a similar trajectory on the secondary market as the later Party prints.

Just dot your i's and cross your t's when you agree commit to that agreement, whether by way of signing or by paying a consideration. If you think you found a loophole by selling private under 5 years, take one for the team and let us know how it goes.

Presumably the person who buys it privately will consign it to auction.
Then the fun begins!

Amoako Boafo print, by Francis on Dec 17, 2020 18:31:39 GMT 1, I would say the artist with work that Boafo makes looks closet to is Egon Schiele. How much are his prints going for? That would be the best comparison.

This is not how any of the art market works.

Amoako Boafo print, by travispete1 on Dec 18, 2020 4:28:03 GMT 1, What might be worth considering is putting some quiet feelers out to the private sale departments of the larger houses and see if they have clients with interest. Otherwise I’m sure if I hang back a bit a few will dribble out to the marketplace and a price will get set. It’s not my life savings so if it works great if not so be it.

Amoako Boafo print, by campfire headphase on Dec 18, 2020 5:29:32 GMT 1, Amoako is a great artist. Charting some new figurative territory. Why all the hate? Kaws’ art is trash but people here are just short of offering up animal sacrifices on altar pieces to worship his art and drink his ball sweat. It’s great that the board is at least discussing better art like Amoako and showing interest in artists from Africa.
I’m not sure if any are left or not, but Amoako will no doubt go down as one of the biggest artists of this period. I’m sure plenty of people willing and happy to pay the 5k or whatever it is. If you like his art and can’t get an original, this is the next best thing. Why bitch about it when you can STFU and buy one?

They rather not have an embarrassing result at auction that would compromise the artist's market. Most artist's markets are based on original works. If one of these appeared in auction next week and sold for £50 it wouldn't affect his market at all.

This exactly why they are doing this to prints, even 100 dollar prints, right now. They don’t want them to resell for less than retail derailing their investments... I mean markets.. 100% why Louis Buhl and LSC are doing this with their artists. They will ask auction houses to take down prints if they have very few bids.
Once you pay for something you should be able to do whatever the hell you want especially if you don’t sign an actual legal contract with any gallery. Pro flip or anti flipper.

Of course he isn’t Kerry James Marshall. I couldn’t agree with you more. KJM is no Hockney either. It’s useless to compare KJM to Boafo. Completely different practices. That aside, Amoako is a very promising artist and a lot of people slept on his paintings. His art is current and its exciting. Big collectors and museums are taking notice. The right people acknowledge the quality of his work. His popularity on UAA is a useless indicator of his relevance. UAA doesn’t dictate markets that way.

Amoako Boafo print, by travispete1 on Dec 19, 2020 2:56:05 GMT 1, Yes it’s embarrassing. I joined this board back in 2006 when I bought all of my Banksy prints from POW for <150 each and kind of forgot about art for a while. I recently sold one for 70k so I’m intrigued again about the art market. Not a flake I can assure you but I guess I had multiple usernames. So shoot me lol

Amoako Boafo print, by artylang on Dec 19, 2020 14:17:37 GMT 1, lol. this dude aint kerry james marshall. what period do you mean? March-Dec 2020? man that made me laugh Of course he isn’t Kerry James Marshall.
Been around long enough to see how much trash the rubells leave in their wake. This dude is getting juiced until there's nothing left. Art at this level stops being art and becomes rich people jerking each other off. It's very unfortunate for the artists who envisioned a meaningful career. Jonas already cooling. What happened to Joe Bradley? Still house? Israel Lund? Sebastian Black? This isn't a new game. Soon the next round of hot young artists will join the island of misfit toys and the cycle will begin again.
The saddest and most disgusting part of all of this is the disingenuous showing of African and ethnic art we are currently seeing. Lots of big prices and selling but where's the substance and conversation out of the blue chip galleries that have revenue equal to a small country's gdp?

All different artists or the same one? This is all going to end badly. A gallery fight for who suckers the most.
