Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, Australia, by Deleted on Jan 13, 2017 17:15:16 GMT 1, Hello everyone,
Can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere
I'm trying to find out whether I can send an artwork made of empty aerosol cans from the UK to the EU. The cans are all empty but still contain the ball bearings. They're all bolted to wood so have been pierced.
The only company that said definitely not was Royal Mail but no one else has got back to me. Flight logistics are on the case too but I just wanted to see if anyone has had any experience or know or any shipping companies that would do this type of product. I think Sweet Toof had issues sending his painted cans but I believe that was to America.
Many thanks in advance

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, Australia, by elevenspots on Feb 26, 2017 22:15:20 GMT 1, Does anyone have details for Flight Logistics - looks like the website is down? I need to send some art received my counter editions to someone in London.
I'm told it's not insured if I send it through Royal Mail - circa £800 - posting flat.
Advice and direction would be great. Thank-you.

Thank-you. Royal Mail insurance shouldn't be a problem. The issue may be that the package is too large or heavy to be shipped via Royal Mail and as a result is passed on to Parcelforce. I believe that their insurance doesn't cover anything that has appreciated in value from its original sales price. If you're sending something tubed and not flat, you may insure it for up to £2,500 provided it meets the required dimensions.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, Australia, by loartve on Jun 21, 2017 9:13:25 GMT 1, If anyone has any experience of shipping to Russia can they drop me a PM. It seems that you can only ship to Commercial addresses (not residential) and unless it's marked $250 or less the chances are it won't get through.
Keen to know any work arounds or if anyone has any tips either post them below or let me know. Thanks

If you use standard shipping services they will lose custody of the item and you'll have no recourse when it turns up lost.
I've have had success using Atlantic Express.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, Australia, by tartarus on Jul 11, 2017 23:29:55 GMT 1, its a pain. I've shipped records over before. but its possible to get them go into customs and vanish for months and sometimes they steam through. Very few couriers will let you even ship as you say. If I can work out who I used ill PM you.
Honest advice, I find the records a ball ache but they aren't that valuable. If it was, I just wouldn't bother.
There are a couple of people on here from Russia though, they must have come up with ways to get stuff over.

FedEx, DHL and other couriers have their own rules and restrictions here. Never had any problems tho

If you're sending via regular mail tracked service there are no restrictions and parcel will arrive within 2-3 weeks from UK or US. Even had 3 days delivery from Japan once.
If you're sending via express couriers there are some rules and restrictions depends on service. They're lazy to deal with customs but still you can send. Received via UPS, DHL, FedEx to a private address.

I usually fabricate my own box out of cardboard and styrofoam. Based on your dimensions, you could probably buy a cardboard box with foam inside that will fit your painting for $50. www.boxbrosla.com/art-handling
or buy a box from box city and wrap it yourself...

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, Australia, by workandturn on Nov 11, 2017 18:58:24 GMT 1, I will need to ship a POSE print that I bought (I ended up buying another POSE print here on the Forum and don't want 2) and wondered if anyone could give me a recommendation as to the best postal carrier to use ?
Ideally shipping flat with insurance to cover the piece.
Im in NY and one potentially buyer is in Kent, OH
I only want to ship within the US
As always any advice is much appreciated.

I've found their tracking to be far more accurate than USPS. But experiences may vary.

Shipping Art • UK, USA, Asia, Europe, Australia, by mose on Nov 11, 2017 21:55:12 GMT 1, I wouldn't bother with insurance. They'll take your money, but good luck getting money out of them should something happen. Many shippers exclude fine art from coverage. I'd go signature confirmation before going insurance.
I also don't recommend shipping flat, unless the print doesn't allow rolling. Flat shipments get damaged at a much higher rate than tubed from my experience. Rolled and placed in a high-quality tube(like Yazoo Mills) or a PVC pipe = much safer. If you have a lesser tube, a mid-grade uline or something, you could always go tube+box.
Personally, I've had the most success with Fedex. I use their cheapest option.

Of course it can be done to maximize safety. I still don't recommend it as 'flat shipments get damaged at a much higher rate than tube from my experience'.
And on insurance, I'm glad you've had positive experiences. I've had, and have read many other, unsatisfactory experiences. So, I don't insure and just pack bomb-proof rolled and roll the dice. I bring up the issue because people need to be aware that, just because a shipping company took your money for insurance, don't think you are bullet-proof. Read the fine print if it is of concern.
