It truly does seem to be only about value, investment, making money.
I find the whole thing really rather distasteful.

I appreciate that being a Luddite I don’t understand it at all, so I may well be wrong. But it does seem to me to lack even the starting point as to why most of us collect art - the love of the art itself.
If I could smash the loom, or throw my clog into it, I would.

I’ve tried really hard to understand NFTs and suspend my initial cynicism but I just don’t get it at all. I like the fact that the artist will receive future royalties but, that aside, the rest of it still just feels like a cash grab. I’m trying to decide who’s the bigger mug though, me for failing to comprehend the market or those paying these sort of prices.

I am now in my late 30s and this whole NFT hype makes me feel a lot older than my years. Mind you, in a discussion about NFTs on a podcast I was listening to the other day, one of the presenters made the point that the “current generation” have never had the need to own any form of media in a physical format. Sounds kind of obvious when they said it but it also slightly blew my mind. Give me the physical over the digital for most things, art not being the exception.

You buy into the medium not the message, think that’s what Marshall McLuhan said.. you’d have to dig deep and find something like that to justify buying a crypto punk, nyan cat or any of it really

The worse thing is, those artists, and there are many, who have been working with digital art for decades, fine tuning their craft and concepts until digital was an accepted medium, think photography before it. Have now had their field absolutely flooded by really poor quality work, to the extent that it's become a joke. Think of your streetart newcomer trying to flog his first single layer stencil compared to the art and craft of Banksy etc.

It's a shame that some artists are just really rinsing their fanbase without any care of duty to them at all. Burning art as a hype tool, it's the antithesis of art. The worst excesses of consumerism ramped up via the "urban" limited edition market, supercharged with the promise of huge instant returns.

It avoids the poor packaging that is so often seen aswell, plus the risk of damage when the owner handles a print and insurance costs.

See them here in Australia sat in cafes on laptops working on sidelines.. dropping shipping, shares, bitcoin etc. kid in work with me invests 30% of his weekly wage into various portfolios, he's made a lot since covid started.

My police mate telling me that young criminals buying bitcoin, probably involved in these NFT'also.. it will keep changing as the tech will move on quickly and you and I will be getting old sat in our favourite chair appreciating a print on the wall from early 2000's with a few cheeky ales 👍

This is what I don't understand about much of this art, i think the first thing many people are going to do is post it in their instagram account.... And yet so many of these are vertical images that won't post right. Maybe that's the point?
