the artist whose popularity you do not understand, by mose on Apr 6, 2021 15:38:16 GMT 1, Me, I kind of have a different definition of popularity. Any artist, with sufficient backing, can have a moment. Let's discuss names after they've had 40+ year careers, had a retrospective and still produced good work after it, etc. Let's see who is popular after the context of their times has faded.

Though tbf, I think any artist with repetitive styles there's a limit to how many pieces I'd want as I like a bit of variety and freshness in general.

One would imagine that was the point of a lot of his art, considering his demise.

As silly as this sounds, Stik's able to capture genuine emotion and feeling in a basic ass stick figure. You can tell exactly the mood of the subjects which is pretty clever given the seeming simplicity of the art.

Have you ever seen a large Rothko in person? (Hopefully you will not read that as confrontational, as many seem to be these days - tone is lost here sometimes). In all honesty I didn’t realise quite how good they are until I did. I went to the RA Abstract Expressionism exhibition a few years ago. They had a room of just Rothko’s. They were breathtaking. Genuinely moving. Dizzying almost.

I was once lucky enough to have the old Seagam Mural room to myself, back when they were housed in what is now Tate Britain. Truly moving images and with the dimmed lighting a wonderful setting for some quiet contemplation.

Yeah, scale and colour make them pretty special. When you look at them in a book or screen it’s hard to see the point but seems to make sense when you see them in the flesh. Can’t say the same for Pollocks I’ve seen, which still are wanky and pretentious for me.

the artist whose popularity you do not understand, by GMA on Apr 6, 2021 22:04:16 GMT 1, Oli Epp is actually doing great art. Whether it appeals to you or not is another thing all together, but he has a clear and relevant narrative in his work, which is more than I can say for many other artists. Which is the exact question asked by the OG. What do you appreciate but still does not appeal? Not what don’t you like that sucks anyway. Nuance makes for a more interesting discussion.
I don't fall into that camp. I don't appreciate his work. But many others do.

Can’t say the same for Pollocks I’ve seen, which still are wanky and pretentious for me. If you were pissed as much as he was all the time then I suppose that's all that was feasibly possible. Haha yeah I’m surprised he didn’t do piss and drool paintings. Weird how many of the abstract expertionists were alcholics and suffered mental illnesss. Mr and Mrs De Kooning were raging alcoholics, obviously Rothko was a massive drinker and suffered all kinds of mental and physical illneses in his short life, Joan Mitchell also struggled with her drinking and as well as being a heavy drinker they think Polock was bi-polar. Almost seems like prerequisite to style.

I always felt the most pleasant and happiest (drunk) of them all (on the surface anyway) was Bacon. Different specialism but same affliction.
I never forget the feeling I had of seeing 'Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion' for the first time. I was probably there for at least an hour. Left me utterly speechless and completely blown away.
No one like Bacon!
Yeah fully agree, Bacon for me took the best elements of expressionism and made it far more accessible without diluting the raw emotion. He’s easily in my top 5 painters, even though his work is pretty jarring, you can see his inner demons coming out literally in some works.

His messages have all the subtlety of having someone stamp on your face. Stik - still pretty sure he’s a wind up that all the forum are in on apart from me
Any artist with graffiti on something/another image/unusual setting
