I said this in another thread in response to his massive auction results of late. There are plenty of artists i don't get but few that have risen as far as Calleja. The work seems so superficial and uninteresting. I'm totally stumped.
There have been other artists where I didn't get it and then something clicked and i fell in love with the work. Nava is one of those. So i guess you never know, but I've given it a solid effort and nothing's changed.

Look at Yoshitomo Nara as well. Some of that will trickle into other areas of the world, but that market is the main force. nara been doing well 4 a while tho, also been painting 30-40yrs.... JC is new compared 2 that, n WAY less talented if u just compare the works side by side, but an untrained eye would only c pics of wide eyed kids, lol!
Nara, while not necessarily my style, has an incredible complexity and depth that i don't see even a hint of in Calleja. I don't quite get Nara, in that I don't understand the statement, but there are layers to his work that make it interesting.
