Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by kjg on May 23, 2021 19:22:03 GMT 1, I just heard an interview on the Dutch radio with Richard Hessink, auctioneer of Hessink Auctioneers. Hessink Auctioneers unfortunately steal and and sell Banksy's street works. Hessink is a very unsympathetic guy, that's for sure. And he is acting on pure and unpolished greed, that's for sure too.
But for what it's worth: Hessink told the interviewer that he and his colleagues at Hessink Auctions are working on a catalogue raisonné of all of Banksy's street work.

But for what it's worth: Hessink told the interviewer that he and his colleagues at Hessink Auctions are working on a catalogue raisonné of all of Banksy's street work. Firstly it must be an impossible task. Not even Banksy himself could do it. I even doubt he could do it of his studio work.
“A catalogue raisonné (or critical catalogue) is a comprehensive, annotated listing of all the known artworks by an artist either in a particular medium or all media. The works are described in such a way that they may be reliably identified by third parties.” Wikipedia
But I suspect the reason would be to legitimize stolen street work so they can be sold easier.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by tomcolins on Dec 17, 2021 8:22:33 GMT 1, I am looking forward to this catalogue. Can't wait to get it.
As for your other comments, accusing the man of stealing is a very serious thing. You may not like him, but what does that have to do with anything. I don't like many shopkeepers either, many are rude these days. Doesn't mean I won't shop there.
As for your greed comment, you sound jealous. Come to think of it, you sound more like an art dealer, who doesn't like the competition.
Maybe I sound biast, but I have bought from Hessink's many times. I always received good advise, and I always got a guarantee from them. True, they are not Sotheby's or Christie's, but what they sell is good.

You are rather suspect my man.
First post of the day distilled “read this, how can banksy condemn selling art removed from the street if he is doing the same.”
Second post “looking forward to this upcoming hessink auction of essentially all removed banksy street art.”
Third post “how dare you accuse hessink, i have bought from them and they are great.”
Seems like a rather shameless and poor attempt to hype something and defend someone.
Do you perhaps have an interest in the success of this auction?

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by tomcolins on Dec 17, 2021 9:02:01 GMT 1, I do hope they do well. I like this auction house and what they sell. As for the owner, he maybe rude at times but he is dead honest. I can't say that for many others.
As for this nonsense of steeling every idiot starts with. If Banksy sprayed a piece on my house or garden fence, I would sell it and it would be perfectly legal. You put it on my property, then I am the new owner. I don't understand any of you who are whining about stealing. Picasso drew on restaurant napkins al the time, I don't hear them complaining.
As for my comments, I don't like people who complain about people they don't know. Talk about the art work and stop slandering people you don't know.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by buffin on Dec 17, 2021 10:15:58 GMT 1, Impossible task unless you steal photos from all over the Internet and even then there are pieces like the one at Marble Arch that have never been claimed.
Any auction house that sales Banksy items without COAs should be avoided imo.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by Boy Wonder on Dec 17, 2021 10:20:15 GMT 1, The trouble is that works with coa are boring. The artist him self calls studio works "souvenirs" the real works comes from the street. To quote the artist "
"Hello. My name is Banksy, I’m a graffiti writer from Bristol. This in an exhibition of stencils I normally use for painting around town on other peoples property. These are some of my favourite hits from the past years or so. How would I describe graffiti ? As the only true artwork we have left. Graffiti is honest and direct and beautiful. Even ugly graffiti. Has e beautiful side to it - even ugly graffiti says fuck you - you haven’t ground the life out of me yet. As far as the show goes I wouldn’t make any great claims for these paintings. They’re just graffiti tags. The paintings are like souvenirs of street hits. They’re like the tea-towels or the souvenir mugs of the real thing on the streets."...

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by tomcolins on Dec 17, 2021 11:08:29 GMT 1, That is just dumb talk. What about all the other artists out there, that do not have their own pest control. Like Rembrand or Vermeer, what about the Mona Lisa. You are saying that only the artist can give a certificate. Which is basically the butcher, that preforms quality control on his own meat.
In other words, people who have now studied Banksy's work for years, can no longer be called a specialist because Pest Control (aka Banksy) says so?
Here is a good one. Your real estate agent can no longer valuate your house. Only the architect can do that?

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by Boy Wonder on Dec 17, 2021 11:23:07 GMT 1, Thats the politically correct answer. Truth is that these works exist. And they are by far the best. They are the cornerstone of the artists production and should be reckognized as such.
Again read the words of the artist. Studio works and prints are souvenirs.

I think that the placement of the work often plays an integral part of the work. For example the piece on Reading Jail would not make sense in any other setting. Some pieces removed like the Thekla work is literally a fish out of water. The argument against is that particular work probably would not still exist so at least the public can still get to see it.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by tomcolins on Dec 18, 2021 7:03:47 GMT 1, Actually, Most auction houses have an agreement with Pest Control. Meaning they get P.C. certified pieces to sell if they choose not to sell the street pieces. An auction house, no matter who they are, would never pass on a piece of art valued at $500,000.
Which also means, that a form of Monopoly is being played here by Banksy and Pest Control. Last I looked this form of business was illegal.
Now I would not hold it against the big two, as they have been caught many times now rigging the market with illegal price fixing, selling that fake Leonardo DaVinci, and now that so called Shredded work by Banksy, which they first sold as an older piece (sounded more like a publicity stunt, which worked well for the unknowing), even selling a Banksy print for 400.000 when similar ones were being sold at that same time for 60.000. I mean come on. Some rich people throw with their money, but over paying that much. It just doesn't add up.
And anyways, Bansky is a street artist, not a print artist. He is famous for his Street Work. Imaging if the Paintings of Rembrand were worth only $50,000 and his prints (which there are thousands of) were worth millions. You would say the world is upside down. A print is nothing more than a poster, printed in a limited amount, so what if he scribbled his name on it. A poster is a poster. No, I am much happier with an original street piece on my wall than a poster. As I would consider, your poster inferior to the original.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by hnkpnk on Jan 11, 2022 23:56:51 GMT 1, Ok, so now you can order Hessink's Catalogue Raisonné of Banksy’s Street Art. I don't want to give them any free advertising, but it will come out anyway.
As I wrote before I don't think they do it out of the goodness of their heart, but just to legitimise their auctions of Banksy street art.
Judging by the sampler: en.calameo.com/read/006161724f2f7a7a83c35 it seems like it will look like shit too. And there are some doubtful examples there. The skiing monkey? No, wonder Banksy didn't claim it even if it's his!
And just by a quick look I can identify a couple of my own photographs there. So if there are others that have had their photos stolen we can do a joint invoice of whatever professional photographers charge.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by Brice on Jan 14, 2022 14:03:17 GMT 1, I am surprised at how little interest this Catalog Raisonné seems to arouse, yet in the past this exciting idea had been suggested here
"1,100 pages and more than 2,500 photographs" ----> WoO°oow I can't wait to see that, compile all or a very large part of Banksy's street works, 25 years of work!
Have those who recognize one or more of their photos contacted Hessink Auctioneers !?

Yes this concern was previously mentioned, the final version may be different from the available sample. Is there any website, or blog, that compiles Banksy's work in the same way this CR claims to want to do ?

Flickr. You could put what they've put together in a week, probably less considering how poorly designed it is, slide in one or two "drill rats" on wood of your own making and a "skiiing monkey" and you'd be a potential millionaire before you know it. Unless that is, it was pre-announced and everyone wise to their game called bullshit.

There may be a more precise referencing, I am an amateur, I am not a specialist in the work of Banksy, hence my questioning

Instagram didnt start until 2010/11. Think most of us archived on Stencil Revolution and then Flickr in the early to mid 00's.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by zorglubs on Jan 14, 2024 22:38:05 GMT 1, Seems like an good way of providing false provenance for dodgy street pieces put up for auction... Especially if others start using the raisonné as reference for authentication.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by lukas01 on Jan 14, 2024 23:43:22 GMT 1, Pest Control already has a catalog raisonné. Anyone who wants the PDF can request it. Just be honest to get it for free and don't give it away to anyone once you get it. A very dear friend of mine has had the PDF of the catalog for a few months and everything is there to this day.
Another catalog raisonné is useless. In fact, it could be useful if you go to the bathroom and have run out of toilet paper. 😎
These kids would even sell their mother to make money.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by Jules Leotard on Jan 15, 2024 4:10:49 GMT 1, Reading through this thread, I started thinking, if Banksy were truly a man of profound wit, he should take the stencils back to the same locations every so often, after a wall has been cut out or what not, replace the art on the new wall that has been installed and water down the 'value' that the person in possession of the original has. A decade later, the wall owner is like, "Ye ain't feckin' tearing the wall down again, Sod off!" Meanwhile, what was once 'an original' is now merely a 1/10 print on brick and concrete.
If my accent was poor or offensive, please forgive.
Any rumors afloat regarding Cut & Run visiting the next location?

Even 1/10 of Banksy has value. :-))))
Anyone who buys works of art created on walls on the street will never be sure that they have purchased an original by Banksy. No certificate.
Only Banksy can tell you whether it was made by his own hands or not.
Better not to buy works of this kind.

Banksy - Street Art - Catalogue Raisonné, by Shoot Again on Jan 15, 2024 14:27:27 GMT 1, I am looking forward to this catalogue. You don't sound "biast" (whatever that means ?!? and this is coming from a french man who's not fluent in english either !) but you certainly sound like someone who has not the slightest idea of what he's talking about ;-)

I disagree with that there are plenty of ways of verifying street pieces, photo matching, expert opinion, letters of provenance and other forms of due diligence. Trading them is another matter and due to the way the market functions is not something I would get involved with.
