NFT Art , by darwin on Feb 21, 2021 0:58:57 GMT 1, I’d say all the NFT can work great for collectibles like Pokemon or baseball cards. No need to make them, no need to ship them no need to store them. You can see suck card on your mobile. Also it’s very easy to sell/buy. Already happening, check out NBA Top Shot.
You purchase digital collectibles which come in the form of gifs. Each gif is from moment in an NBA game. The value comes from who the player is, how legendary the moment is, etc. Easily tradeable, people are making good money.

Creating value out of thin air. Great idea, basketball is a perfect sport for that. All the shots, blocks assist, buzzer beaters, dunks, no-look passes. All limited and collectible.

NFT Art , by theclash on Feb 21, 2021 2:26:39 GMT 1, Mad Dog Jones today has broken the record for NFT sales: $3.9M in 10min!!! Yes, in fact I think it was 5 minutes.
I am also keen to learn more and have been reading into it a bit lately.
Maybe its a generational thing but I feel Art is a tangible pursuit - you buy work you like and you hang it on your wall to admire - simple.
Problem I'm having is I just dont get what you do with it exactly?! Whats the point of it if it's stuck on your hard drive or mobile? Much like all your other photos and media, to be eventually forgotten about.
Is it just another speculative storage of wealth with everyone banking on the next hit or like Pokemon?
I dont see many mainstream artists crossing over yet but I could be wrong. The Beeple/Christies sale should be interesting. Not like them to take risks
A big bunch of people have made 1 to 10’s million USD in ethereum and don’t yet want to flip back to fiat. NFT art is a way of diversifying and/or feeling good. Will it work? No idea but as long as Eth keeps rising I think NTF is only getting bigger. $25m for Beeple in Christie’s seems about right

NFT Art , by House of Arts on Feb 21, 2021 6:16:46 GMT 1, Wow, thanks for this topic. I'm pretty deep into crypto but after Cryptokitties I always assumed NFT's were mostly just a media attention generating meme, and never really looked into it. It's really interesting to see if this takes off mainstream. I'm trying to think of ways of how to actively 'display' NFT art that would give me the same feeling as looking at my framed paper pieces. I might just be a bit too boomerish for that, haha.
But given how the market for in-game transactions has exploded the past few years, I can really see gen-Z, that had all this technology from the time they were kids, be really into this and find ways to 'display' their NFT-art. Fuck this is cool.

Either way, we at Harveyn levels now.

Collectibles will be first.
Not long after these kids will hang tv's as picture frames and before you know it someone is paying £3 million for a nft to hang in his new house off his bitcoin gains.
What do you think they thought of us buying banksy when it was just street art.
Buy some bitcoin, buy eth. F$%k the banks. It is the only way we win

NFT art is a way of diversifying and/or feeling good. Will it work? No idea but as long as Eth keeps rising I think NTF is only getting bigger. $25m for Beeple in Christie’s seems about right You and Beeple have answered my question. Its all about the money, nothing else. Nowhere am I reading about any aesthetic appreciation for the art, just the money. There's an awful lot of time and effort gone into that work I agree but please explain how you are justifying that valuation. Do you have $25 million spare? Also, I dont mean to be rude or pry but how old are you?
A lot of NFT trading is and will be about money and store / increase of purchasing power. This is similar to the asset bubbles evident everywhere now but turbocharged as transacted in the fastest appreciating asset class of all time which has minted huge wealth rapidly. Lots of crypto holders have made 100-1000x and this is the new shiny thing. Much art is a pure investment / speculative vehicle with high end art stored away in vaults or people investing in prints of a hot artist but probably mostly a different buyer base. My guess of where Beeple’s work clears in this auction and why it raises so much seems to have upset you.

This is more than just art. Some of the stuff being done is revolutionary. It will have massive implications for the way artists claim royalties. Provenance. Ownership/Distribution Rights. Insurance. So much more.
There is so much much more though. Ethereum is amazing not because the price goes up. A community are building an open source decentralized web 3.0. Anyone can join in. Take a look try it out. Be your own bank.
Peace

I agree with this. Beeple doesn’t once (in his video) mention anything about art. He doesn’t say what his art is about, what he portrays, why he makes it as an artist. He only mentions product, money, technology (and other commercially successful artists). He is to me the worst kind of artist.
That said I’m sure there’s some money to be made flipping this stuff.

It’s easy to say be your own bank but until you can live your life solely using crypto currency it’s pretty difficult to live like that. Personally I think we are miles off being able to buy bread, milk and a newspaper with crypto, if ever at all.

This is def a pretty cool feature. No real standardisation yet to my understanding so it’s really what is coded into each smart contract. Also if you sell on a different exchange than where you bought I think can run into issues but going the right way for sure

Flipping means buying something and selling it quickly for a profit. It’s flipping whether or not the artist gets a cut, though yeah it’s a little less toxic if they do.

Yes. I’ve read this with interest but struggle with how this all gets displayed. Static digital images could have some amazing colours and depth but looking at those Beeple frames, is the intention that they constantly move? Interesting as to what can be done but not very conducive to any calming or contemplative elements traditionally associated with art. Seems rather like living in a Hogwarts college.

That’s not necessarily true is it. We all know the name is relating to a clever play on pest control, if the name was “Sheila from down the road” would they have sold so many ? No.

NFT Art , by Pipes on Feb 22, 2021 13:25:12 GMT 1, Why an Animated Flying Cat With a Pop-Tart Body Sold for Almost $600,000
In the 10 years since Chris Torres created Nyan Cat, an animated flying cat with a Pop-Tart body leaving a rainbow trail, the meme has been viewed and shared across the web hundreds of millions of times.
On Thursday, he put a one-of-a-kind version of it up for sale on Foundation, a website for buying and selling digital goods. In the final hour of the auction, there was a bidding war. Nyan Cat was sold to a user identified only by a cryptocurrency wallet number. The price? Roughly $580,000.
Mr. Torres was left breathless. “I feel like I’ve opened the floodgates,” he said in an interview on Friday.
The sale was a new high point in a fast-growing market for ownership rights to digital art, ephemera and media called NFTs, or “nonfungible tokens.” The buyers are usually not acquiring copyrights, trademarks or even the sole ownership of whatever it is they purchase. They’re buying bragging rights and the knowledge that their copy is the “authentic” one.
Other digital tokens recently sold include a clip of LeBron James blocking a shot in a Lakers basketball game that went for $100,000 in January and a Twitter post by Mark Cuban, the investor and Dallas Mavericks owner, that went for $952. This month, the actress Lindsay Lohan sold an image of her face for over $17,000 and, in a nod to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, declared, “I believe in a world which is financially decentralized.” It was quickly resold for $57,000.
People have long attached emotional and aesthetic value to physical goods, like fine art or baseball cards, and have been willing to pay a lot of money for them. But digital media has not had the same value because it can be easily copied, shared and stolen.
Blockchain technology, which is most often associated with Bitcoin, is changing that. NFTs rely on the technology to designate an official copy of a piece of digital media, allowing artists, musicians, influencers and sports franchises to make money selling digital goods that would otherwise be cheap or free.
In an NFT sale, all the computers hooked into a cryptocurrency network record the transaction on a shared ledger, a blockchain, making it part of a permanent public record and serving as a sort of certification of authenticity that cannot be altered or erased.

If anything the daily/monthly ETH reward has come down over the past few months as it's $ value have risen... attracting more miners on the chain.

They are wrong and only competing with themselves. They are trying to roll that into other coins as well. Rinse and repeat. And after living through everything that happened in Texas last week, good luck on using those coins as real money when there is no internet or power and all transactions are cash only.
I’m sure it will change, but at this point it’s ALL just so damn ugly too.

NFT Art , by d.r. perseus on Feb 23, 2021 4:27:07 GMT 1, I’m sure it will change, but at this point it’s ALL just so damn ugly too. 5 years in the future. Massive weather event hits a coast of America. There is no power or internet and someone is begging as a destitute homeless person for food: "but my block chain. I have the crypto. I have the NFT. My digital net worth is trillions. Just give me internet. Give me power. I'll show you." I throw him 40 dollars out of compassion and say "fiat still works" and walk away. People should be putting less trust in the reliability of what we know as comfort mechanisms (electricity, water, food, internet) and focus more on what happens when they disappear. My attitude two weeks ago was much different, but after the past 8 days in Texas, I don't trust any system anymore. Going full prepper now.
At least in a major earthquake your electronic art won’t be destroyed?

My attitude two weeks ago was much different, but after the past 8 days in Texas, I don't trust any system anymore. Going full prepper now. 5 years in the future. Biden (or actually Warren) has spent 1000000 trillion on government programs and hyperinflation has ravaged the American economic system. Seems like printing endless amounts of money out of thin air has consequences in the long run. The 40 dollars in your pocket isn't enough to buy a crumb of bread. But hey, at least you can hold it, right? Out of compassion some kid your son is friends with, that did make the transition to digital currencies, offers to send you some bitcoin, but of course given your mentality don't have a wallet set up to receive it. He leaves you a shrugging emoticon and a 'ok boomer, sorry to hear' and disappears from the chat. You look at the piles of worthless cash you have stacked in your home and decide to burn them to get some heat.
Also fully agree with the last two paragraphs, just add 'fiat currency' to the list of comfort mechanisms.

Ask someone from Zimbabwe how well fiat currency works in a time of hyperinflation.

Ask someone from Zimbabwe how they enjoy their coinbase wallet on their computer or phone with power and internet and how reliable those are? I mean, if you prefer the reliability of knowing your money will be worth 737% less in a year:
I'd say they would love to have their money being paid out in a deflationary crypto like bitcoin, even with a little unreliable power and internet.

fee.org/articles/how-bitcoin-could-smash-socialism-in-venezuela/
Venezuela is one of the most rapid adopters of cryptocurrency in the world. Typically, Venezuelans aren’t holding cryptocurrency as a long-term hedge against inflation. Instead, they are using it to buy food, medical supplies, and day-to-day purchases.
With some luck, decentralized currencies could help to break down the grip of the state and let Venezuelans finally breathe free.
In order to accommodate this, merchants in Venezuela have started to directly accept BTC payments. A deal between Panamanian-based cryptocurrency exchange Cryptobuyer and Venezuelan payments processor Mega Soft has created around 20,000 point-of-sale terminals in the South American nation.
However, even with these services, Bitcoin can be difficult to use and many Venezuelans have instead turned to custodial solutions like AirTM. This wallet allows Venezuelans to spend their Bitcoin within a network, making it easier to send and receive cryptocurrency.
This is particularly useful for freelancers and makes it easier for Venezuelans to make purchases abroad. Without Bitcoin and the private companies offering related services, it would be exceedingly difficult for many Venezuelans to function.
