In Southern California one is more likely to die by automobile or bees. How do I bee proof my collection?

Auctions Is This the Next Art-Market Bubble? A Unique NFT for the Popular ‘Nyan Cat’ GIF Just Sold for a Whopping $560,000 The price was 300 in Ethereum.
Eileen Kinsella, February 22, 2021
The creator of the wildly popular Nyan Cat GIF decided to celebrate its 10-year anniversary by selling a digital asset known as an NFT—a non-fungible token—at auction. The sale, hosted by the new NFT marketplace Foundation, pulled in a whopping 300ETH—that’s for the blockchain called Ethereum—or the USD equivalent of roughly $561,000.
The price shot up in the final 30 minutes of bidding from 15ETH (roughly $18,000), after having started around 3ETH ($5,000).
“It was crazy,” the artist, Chris Torres, told Artnet News. “At first the auction was going very slow, so I didn’t think it’d get that many bids, but there was a wild bidding war near the end. Part of me was thinking, this can’t be real. There’s no way.”
So what exactly is Nyan Cat? The pixelated gray cat is a throwback to 1980s video game characters seen in Pac-Man or Atari. It flies in a straight line through an equally dated-looking starry night backdrop, a stream of rainbow colors trailing behind. All of this is set to a relentlessly chirpy techno soundtrack. The three-minute-plus video uploaded to YouTube in 2011 spawned dozens of memes after, including a 10-hour video of Nyan Cat on repeat, and one featuring 50 different cat memes that all riff on the original cat. Nevertheless, the NFT for the work is unique, Torres noted.
“[T]hanks for believing in Nyan Cat all these years,” Torres said in a tweet after the sale. “I hope this inspires future artists to get into the #NFT universe so they can get proper recognition for their work.”
Christie’s recently announced the sale of its first-ever purely digital artwork at auction: Everydays—The First 5000 Days by Mike Winkelmann, who goes by the name Beeple. It will be offered in a standalone online sale aimed at new and younger collectors.
Like Torres’s Nyan Cat, Beeple’s work carries an NFT, a unique digital token encrypted with the artist’s signature and individually identified on a blockchain, effectively verifying the rightful owner and authenticity of the creation. In December, the first large-scale auction of Beeple’s art grossed $3.5 million in a single weekend, according to Esquire, which offers newbies a good in-depth primer on how NFTs work.
For the 10th anniversary of his GIF, Torres said he created a remastered version of the original, which includes a series of tweaks. For instance, a star that would appear randomly in the original 12-frame animation reportedly irked him, so he removed it for the remastered edition.
As the bidding neared its end, Torres and a representative for Foundation watched the action on a Twitch video, which was shared to Twitter. “I love cats and I love bright colors,” Torres said as he talked about the “LOL Comics” series of stick figure characters he’s been producing for the past 20 years.
Foundation launched as an NFT marketplace earlier this month and hit $1 million in sales within its first two weeks.
On Foundation, artists set a reserve price; once it’s met, it triggers a 24-hour auction. If a bid is placed within the final 15 minutes, it extends the auction another 15 minutes. At the Nyan Cat auction, there were 29 bids placed and the majority of those happened within the final hour, so the sale kept getting extended.
“The sale is significant because it’s the first famous meme to sell as an NFT,” said Foundation’s head of community Lindsay Howard, “and it signals a new era where digital artists can be directly compensated for the work they create and share online.”
Torres agreed, saying the best part about the NFT world is that “it’s a way for artists to directly monetize off their hard work.”

Who cares about inflation/deflation when its that volatile?! Its not stable enough to be a currency and never will be unless centralised (governement interference) methodology is introduced and then that would defeat the whole purpose. I posted an article describing that a lot of people from Venezuela are doing exactly what you say is impossible? Also, wouldn't you call hyper inflation like in Zimbabwe and Venezuela volatile? I mean I get it, you seem to hate crypto and don't want to hear anything else, but why?
If you are going to 'prep', just include a Ledger or Trezor with a (few) bitcoin on it.

So you just don't (want to?) understand decentralization? This is literally impossible given how a decentralized blockchain works.

NFT Art , by niss on Feb 24, 2021 13:01:31 GMT 1, Don't really know what to make of NFTs either...
Almost bought one of the beeple open editions because he's kind of a legend in my line of work (not saying I necessarily like his art but he is very well known). Sells for insane amounts now.
Bought a Bill Elis Nifty a month ago via Nifty Gateway for $250 because I really liked it. Could have sold it for $1600 yesterday (about $1200 after fees)...
I have to admit though that I have no idea what to do with this thing... I think that's the main problem that needs to be figured out. Maybe in the future there's gonna be digital frames/VR Museums? No idea... can't picture it yet.
One of the main arguments against NFTs seems to be that you could just as well download a perfect copy of the NFT without paying a cent. But I feel people will always want that "proof of ownership" or COA or whatever. I mean you could probably very closely copy Space Invader Invasion Kits if you had the right tiles but nobody here would hang those on his wall because they aren't original. Would you hang a fake Banksy if it was literally 100% the same but you knew it was a copy and not by the man himself?
But honestly most of the NFTs being released at the moment are pretty trash imo. Do people who buy them really like them? Is it speculation? At least the artists seem to be getting paid as far as I can tell...
The only thing that makes me REALLY question the whole thing is the supposedly huge amount of energy it consumes/wastes. Still have to make up my mind if that's a reason to abandon the whole business.
All that being said... there's a big Greg Mike drop on thursday with combined physical/digital drops that I will have a look at.

NFT Art , by Gard on Feb 24, 2021 16:41:56 GMT 1, I think people should look at their NFTs as their flat file. You rarely look at them, but you know they're there.
Julian Opie has been working with things that look like GIFs for a long time? Shouldn't you be able to show that on your mobile-phone? And wouldn't it be nice if when you wanted to sell it you gave Sothebys a link to access a display copy of the work. No shipping needed. Lawrence Weiner's text works would work well as NFTs. They can be reproduced in any size, but it's always the last one created that is the original.
I believe this is a way of thinking that we have to get used to. I remember 10 years ago people were skeptical of Giclee prints, and now Gerhard Richter is selling photocopies of his watercolors.

And I don't think there's an offer of 65,000 for the piece above. Since it's included in the lottery? Or is there something I'm missing?

There's definitely some lottery component to this but I was thinking that was separate from this $65k "canvas" - I could be totally off the mark here though.
Fact remains that people are dropping some pretty eye popping $$$ on NFT - making signed banksy prints look downright cheap by comparison. I don't really know what to make of it.

NFT Art , by Big Bad Mo on Feb 24, 2021 23:41:41 GMT 1, NFTs aren’t particularly new in the space and the majority of items are awful. But is that any different to physical art anyway? There is enough money being made to attract quality artists and should produce some new ideas. We will see existing artists start moving over quickly. I do look forward to putting up my framed screen and having my NFT’s on loop around my physical art. In some ways I fear it will make my physical art less interesting. Imagine if Banksy made the TV screen from GDP a NFT. I’m certain all the cretins shitting on NFTs and blockchain would be all over it pumping their Banksy nft. This board would be full of clowns shilling their blockchain pest control proof of ownership lol. That’s all it takes. There is so much room Even just for custody of visual or media art now that the custody side alone is a reason for huge growth in the space. Im just waiting for something to really hit me that isn’t cool just coz it’s supposedly the first or a great flip etc.

NFT Art , by Criminal Mischief on Feb 25, 2021 7:19:31 GMT 1, This work is god awful. The subjects are gimmicky, the execution in mediocre, but worst of all using an innovative digital/blockchain platform to sell traditional oil paintings just seems like such a reach.
The whole marketplace appears to be purely about "art" as commodity without any actual connoisseurship or art appreciation. Crazy to see how much hype (and money) is behind this NFT craze, but from what little I've seen the majority of the work looks like a cash grab and I assume the majority of the sales are pure speculation.
Is this (NFTs in general) basically the new Game Stop stock of the week?

Constantly spouting pure nonsense about Venezuela and it’s not a currency because it’s volatile ( volatility has nothing to do with the definition of a currency). BTC is on the Bloomberg terminal as a currency! I’ll take Bloomberg’s agreement over yours everyday. The thread was about NFTs and your here talking nonsense about what’s not a currency and Venezuela. Having strong opinions doesn’t equate to knowledge.

There is so much room Even just for custody of visual or media art now that the custody side alone is a reason for huge growth in the space. Im just waiting for something to really hit me that isn’t cool just coz it’s supposedly the first or a great flip etc.
I agree, most of the stuff I have seen so far I have little interest in for a collection. I do like the avenues it opens up for artists to start monetising directly though. It’s pretty early days in this thing though and not sure which way it will go. There will be lots of hype and scams along the way but also like all art I think you will get some really interesting and innovative artists coming to the fore over time
NFTs aren’t particularly new in the space and the majority of items are awful. NFT Art , by eliopp on Feb 25, 2021 10:51:41 GMT 1, I'm very bullish all things crypto and especially DeFi but NFTs don't appeal to me. There is some irony of people on this forum saying things like "they have no use" and "people are only buying to sell it on at a higher price" though

NFT Art , by darwin on Feb 25, 2021 15:45:58 GMT 1, I think most of the "art" in the NFT world is pretty terrible, but at this point that's to be expected. People just tossing stuff out there in the hopes of making a quick buck.
It can only be a matter of time though, before the big boys get into this space. Kaws or Invader, the type of artists who are extremely adept at controlling their own image and perception. Probably looking at it right now. Actually, Kaws already exists in the digital realm with his AR stuff. Be nice to see Invader do an Invasion Of Cyberspace, he's already invaded just about everywhere else!

Jesus... the prices... I guess with the limited edition stuff you get a digital screen and a cheap looking crystal... but $2000?
Didn't know he was gonna do a collab with Bill Elis. I'd probably go for that one if it wasn't $1500
And tomorrow I'm gonna kill myself because people will pay tens of thousands of $...
What is happening?

It's just one release after another after another and at some point most of this crap is going to be looked at as what it is, crap. It makes me think of all the artists that were SO hot and SO hyped over the last 10 years and now you can't even give their art away. I see this going much the same way in that there will be some winners no doubt but a lot more losers. Like the gold rush of street art back in the day...
As for GM, I actually know him and he's a good dude. His art is literally all over Atlanta. This actually seems like a better medium for his style than a static canvas or print. That said, I don't really collect his physical art, why would I collect his digital? if I'm being honest, it's to make money on it at some point down the line. There are so many kids who've made so much money on crypto and it feels like there is just unlimited amounts of cash swishing around. The numbers don't even make sense.
And totally agree, once KAWS or invader or get into this, and I think it's only a matter of time because the money is just so massive and KAWS likes money, it's going to change the landscape and become more mainstream. You're already seeing artists like Kenny Scharf test the waters...

I agree, and I think that when mainstream artists start to work in this space, a lot of the stuff going on at the moment is going to look really naive. Currently, everything seems to be made by people who are ‘really good with computers’ and successful because they got there first. Not always a great recipe for meaningful art. Interesting to see where it goes.
I do like the cans though

NFT Art , by Wanchope on Feb 25, 2021 19:23:09 GMT 1, Great topic by the way, got my mind going! I always try to see both sides and although I have invested in crypto, who knows where it will truly end up. However, I want to say WTAF NFTs ( firstly the examples I’ve seen are fucking weird) secondly I don’t get it in terms of the tangibility of art. I love receiving a proper hard copy, seeing what it has been printed or painted on, the smell of the spray paints or acrylics or whatever. Then getting it framed up. Then there’s NFTs - I own an image that I can put on a slideshow of something, whichever way you spin it it’s not just the same by any stretch of imagination? I buy art for the tangibility and investment ( not always by the way as some of my favourite pieces are the one off pieces I’ve come across). Surely NFTs are just about investment - art lovers surely have to agree or am I really missing something here? Thoughts on a postcard
