NFT Art , by stradled on Mar 2, 2021 12:25:21 GMT 1, Just a note on a few of the things mentioned in this thread, related back to eth.
Many people do not really look at the monetary equivalent to the currency who are actually making these massive investments. I have my crypto and I bought it at a much lower price than it is now, due to the price of the crypto now, it seems like these things are selling for a LOT of money than they really are, but most of the people buying this stuff got in to the space when crypto was a tenth of the price it is now and believe in the future of eth and therefore only care about the amount of eth they accumulate (not the monetary value) In the NFT space, some sites show $, some show eth - IMO they should all show eth
In regards to saying that they have no other uses for the currency, I would completely disagree with that - the defi space is massive and people are staking the currency in pools and using it in the same way as you would use a savings account at a normal bank. People are staking it for the eth2 protocol which changes the way the transactions are mined (not GPU, electricity heavy) and gain good rewards for doing so.
I guess what I am trying to say is this is an ever evolving ecosystem and it has lots of people experimenting - hence the floods of crap artwork - with ways to use it, but previously people would have always looked at the price/fiat and just bought and sold as the price went up or fell, but now people are not doing that, they are buying and interacting the way it was meant to be.
It still has its limitations - gas being the biggest one, but again, this is something that is being explored and worked on, it will take a while still, but the people interacting today understand this and have enough to not worry about it. When that is fixed it will be much more appealing for other people to get on board.
Also we have lots of other chains doing interesting things with their own version of NFT's (without the gas issues) like the street fighter cards, topshot (who are very clear they are in beta) apparently we have an aliens IP to do cards soon too.
It is here to stay, I am sure it will have a shift or 2 before the year is out, but I find it interesting and I like the idea and excited to see where it goes. It has opened my eyes to a lot of digital artists and I will admit, I am not happy - or rich enough to drop $7500 worth of eth on anything, but their are affordable ways to get involved and plenty of ways to follow the space if you are interested

NFT Art , by Bodega Cat on Mar 2, 2021 17:43:59 GMT 1, Makes sense for the digital file to be worth more. The print can always be torn apart / reprinted, but the original file is forever. One could theoretically print an edition of XXX once you own the NFT.

I disagree
Your hard disk may crash, your account be hacked or a lot more of digital problems you can have. Print? The same as you can take pictures of a print and reprint. Not valid imho. Am I getting old by choosing real ink and paper?

NFT Art , by Ravnur 2020 on Mar 2, 2021 18:53:37 GMT 1, Would prefer hardcopy rather than a file of an image.
I like the idea that there is only one and you cannot reprint it. Makes me look better after it and appreciate it more. Also, given that you have to really look after works on paper and canvas I like to think it makes me think more carefully before buying and only buy what I intend to put on the wall (with regular failure :-))
That said I love video, animation, performance, VR etc etc art that you cannot really frame and stick on the wall, but have to enjoy in the moment.
Given how many files and photos I have lost through IT crashes, format changes, hardware changes I think it would be bound to end in tears.
Good discussion!
cheers

NFT Art , by mack on Mar 2, 2021 19:10:25 GMT 1, NFT art shouldn’t age well. New styles come and go in the art world. But when technology moves forward, will people be paying a lot of money for a “low quality” gif from 15 years ago? Or have I missed the point completely? Even if these are 12k HDR images that are 10GB and are future proof from that standpoint, will the actual software (app and backing technology - block chain, database, etc) still be supported? Servers for games that were popular 10 years ago have been shut down. And look at how many things Google has abandoned over the years... killedbygoogle.com/
That’s also an aspect of the ageing thing. But high resolution isn’t a guarantee either (maybe for a picture it is). The Grimes gif/video is still created using tools and programs not up to date. Even though the resolution is awesome, the video will most likely look patheticly outdated in a couple of years. Kids will be able to make cooler things with their phones in 10 min.

NFT Art , by Tiki on Mar 2, 2021 19:55:43 GMT 1, Opensea's definition of free is hilarious. Went over there for a look due to their 'free nft minting' offering, whilst waiting for rarible price to drop. Ethereum price was up almost 10% today so gas SHOULD be down, right? WRONG, in fact its quite the opposite (by a rather large margin). Its free but you have to make two transactions first, to the tune of... $120! What?! Complete farce! That's nothing to do with Opensea though, that is due to the network congestion on Ethereum.

Look I think its weird too but you gotta think about the youth who are growing up in a very different world than you or I. The idea is its decentralized so who cares if your hard drive crashes - it always exists in the blockchain (internet). The only real risk you run is losing your password like the stories of those dudes who have millions of $$ in bitcoin from years back but cant remember their password.
For something like a print it makes sense because you have full ownership. You can use that PNG for whatever you'd like. Put the image on a mug. Fuck it. I guess to some people that's more valuable. (I'm not saying I fall in this category but I'm just trying to see it from their POV.) Its a bit different for an original piece though thats painted. You can't exactly replicate that after even after owning the digital aspect of it. In that case I think the NFT becomes the equivalent of a COA but instead of losing it within a stack of papers it just now exists in your virtual wallet (same as your iphone wallet for example).

From the moment you say I’m getting old I can’t respect your opinion anymore...
Now, seriously, I understand what you say. The mug or the shirt are not valid points of view, you can do it now with any important artist. Download and print
I also understand youth goes through a different path. But that doesn’t mean that all technological path is the future. Some may last, others don’t. And I really think it’s not the way for art. I don’t believe that NFT will ever substitute physical pieces, or download files to print your statues in your home 3D printer... the hand of the artist is there. Why most of us prefer litho or screenprint instead of digital print? Think about it
BUT... I must say I saw a NFT I would have bought if I had funds. Maybe it’s still on sale, or will finish soon. It’s a Vhils explosion. It has movement, so ideally should be displayed on a screen. I would like to hang a screen dedicated to that work. And THAT can only be shown through a different way of understanding things. In fact I’m having an idea now...
So, I don’t give an answer (there are no simple answers) but more questions and doubts. Helpful, right? 😂😂

(Remember buying plots of land in SecondLife) ... if you're right, it's like getting BTC at pennies or Banksy at source, if you're wrong, you're downside is limited by your investment and since most people don't want to pay taxes on their ETH (thought being that crypto has reached a linear and no longer exponential level) they are trading it for something more volatile (possibly exponential) ... then again, I don't know anything, just trying to find art / NFT that i like

The only thing you can't do is "resell it" opensea.io/assets/0x495f947276749ce646f68ac8c248420045cb7b5e/106221885600489640259417971088644341626549984924036190439622016741170095325185That one And screen was already captured 😅 What I don’t understand... they say now 745.000$

NFT Art , by dommorin on Mar 2, 2021 21:51:27 GMT 1, Vhils published some works through opensea last week which appear to now be trading in a secondary market. I admit to not really understanding what actually has been sold. opensea.io/collection/vhils-artworks ''Vhils Explosion - Identity'' video is pretty cool. But what is it?
Description by Vhils is this: ''So much has changed since the opening of my solo exhibition HAZE at Cincinnati Contemporary Center in February 2020. It gives me chills to look at some of the pieces in the show, including this one, and how their meaning is now even more relevant in the context of the terrifying direction the world seems to be going. This is a video Work as its an Ephemeral Artwork the video is the artwork itself.''
I'm still not sure what it is... and how there's a market for that sort of thing.
Anyhow, someone bought it from the artist 3 days ago for close to 7k$, and now is asking 745k$ for it...

NFT Art , by Humble Art Collector on Mar 3, 2021 6:38:43 GMT 1, My point in all of this is you have 2 options buying the digital print of his original planning sketch with its accompanying blockchain (the print is simply a giclee print of a small forma) or you can own the original painting (what the sketch was made for). The painting literally has hundreds of hours in it. More detail. More finesse. Materials. And different skills that go beyond the tools (procreate) provides. If you look at the painting above and the sketch there is a TON more detail in the painting especially in the execution of the camo. I think the NFT model could be a great way to distribute editions, prevent flipping, control multiple purchases, etc. But I think selling inferior works to the original only diminishes the artists reputation and people will feel burned.

NFT Art , by Humble Art Collector on Mar 3, 2021 15:54:15 GMT 1, I agree about the sketchy part. Also sketchy is one of the other paintings was bought by WHISBE the artists and a friend of his. Separately, whisbe also did a drop of 10 but retained 1/10 of all versions so he really only put 9 up. Maybe he used his own "NFT" earrings to buy to keep it in the eco system.
