It sarted at £1k moved very fast at the beginning and my first bid was £2.1k. There was a lot of splitting hairs at the auction today - people trying to bid £200 increments on £20k pieces, so it possibly happened here too. 90% of the bidding was on the phones or absentees so it was hard to keep up.

There was no interest at all in any of these as far as I could tell. DFace unsold as well, people here can always thrown in some lowball offers? Didn't like the micallef at all, but I'm not that hot for him.
I also placed a bid on the Mcgee bottles but lost out. The Mcgee etchings went unsold, they retailed for 12k I think new, and some dealers are charging up to 20k. The detail is stunning in the flesh on those plus it comes in a nice screenprinted wooden box. I'd recommend throwing on offer out there if you're into Barry. The MoMA also owns a set.
The minimalist in me also likes this guy, If the piece was in NY I might throw in a lowball after auction bid, but shipping pieces this big to the US cost about £1000 last time I inquired at phillips.

Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by afroken on Sept 26, 2009 22:12:10 GMT 1, That photograph is lovely. In fact there was a lot of great photography in this auction, particularly the 2 Simon Norfolk Super Computer pieces, neither of which sold.
The problem with the Micallef is that is has too many cocks in it. Not easy to sell. That was $140,000 at Impure Idols.

Quite possible the person just wanted to unload the white elephant in his room or came to terms that he didn't like the painting as much as he thought when he got caught up in the moment and mania. Sucks for him. But at the same time I would never ever had paid 140k for micallef. Naive and or didn't do his homework and paid dearly.

Also it's awesome that he's a dude, considering everybody thinks he's a chick.
