Incisive commentary.

That's what I thought when I bought it BK83; I've either got a very good copy or a Banksy original under the sofa. I would have a nice little chuckle if it turned out to be authentic (not that I've checked!).

Recession? Comparisons to the great depression? Seriously? Unemployment recently reached a new high in the US yet the rich are still furiously spending as the Fall auctions mostly go over the top estimates. Proof that the rich stay rich... or was never as bad as it appeared?

It was definately as bad as it appeared. My siblings are big bank execs and they were shitting. The banks were going down but as we all know by now our gov't/fed swooped in and gave them trillions of dollars. Right now money is so cheap (feds printing press) for those who have access so its no surprise as all this new money needs to be spent on things that are tangible. Unfortunately for the masses not much has changed from last fall.

But this is all an interesting peek into the haves and have nots. The last time a Warhol Brillo box came up for auction it sold for a little over $100,000 - and then one sold at Phillips last night for over $800,000! A 6 to 7 hundred percent increase in only 8 years, and this while we still recover from the greatest crisis since the depression!. It's a little mind boggling.

The collaborative piece with Hirst (Keep it spotless) went for nearly $2m. Simple Intelligence Testing I believe is the most expensive Banksy around $1.1 or 1.2m. FWIW, the Insane Clown canvas was sold 17 months earlier at Pdp for almost $100k more which is not to suggest that I don't believe yesterday's price was quite stunning:
Banksy Title Insane clown Medium mixed media on hessian Year of Work 2001 Size Height 99.2 in.; Width 76.2 in. / Height 252 cm.; Width 193.5 cm. Sale of Phillips de Pury & Company London: Sunday, June 29, 2008 [Lot 00222] Contemporary Art Evening Sale Estimate 200,000 - 300,000 BP (392,850 - 589,275 US$) Sold For 241,250 BP (481,633 US$) PREMIUM Currency Converter

These certainly come up a lot more often then every 8 years as you'll see the Brillo Box sculptures a few times each year. They had settled into a range ~ $250k US and then a few have traded around the $800k-$1m mark with this one and I can only presume these are the ones that buyers are 110% certain came from the 60s. There has been a HUGE controversy swirling for years that over 100 of the Brillo Box scultpures are fakes. Even the Foundaiton recognized the problem but to the best of my knowledge has still never weighed in with a definitive yes or no on the issue. So, some trade at $100k or not at all and a few here and there go for big money. Given that there were hundreds of these things to begin with a now at least 100 fakes (though to be fair, some state that Mr. Hulten had the open authority to make these given his relationship with Andy and that they should therefore be authenticated). My Hulten died before anyone even recognized the problem so ultimately it will be up the Foundation and there are many of the Hulten brillo boxes in some very important collections. Anyway, here is some more reading about it but this certainly weighs on the price of those sculptures:

Also was the Insane Clown canvas the exact one that was auctioned 18 months ago; nice little loss achieved! Insane Clown was indeed the exact same one and yes a loss but I'll bet the seller expected a much larger loss.
Here are the details of SIT though it is 5 canvases and not 4:
Banksy Title Simple intelligence testing (in 5 parts) Description stencilled with the signature on the fifth canvasoil on canvas laid More ... Medium oil on canvas laid on board Year of Work 2000 Size Height 36 in.; Width 36 in. / Height 91.4 cm.; Width 91.4 cm. Misc. Although, Vandalized phone box is rather large and has a nice big pickaxe in it too:
Banksy Title The rude Lord Medium oil on canvas Year of Work 2006 Size Height 34.9 in.; Width 30.2 in. / Height 88.6 cm.; Width 76.7 cm. Andy Warhol’s 1964 single Brillo Soap Pad Box sculpture in silkscreen ink and house paint on plywood, which sold to a telephone bidder.
The work far surpassed the previous record for a single Brillo box, £86,250 ($122,028), earned at Christie’s London in June 2001.

edit: I think I see what they are doing at artinfo and they are either search by brillo box or by sculpture and then it does give you precious little sales history. If you just put in Brillo and paintings it returns almost 6 times as many results on artnet.

Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by hlarmy on Nov 13, 2009 17:43:18 GMT 1, Of course, I went down to see that piece last year. Not overly clever or brilliant but a very nice set of canvasses, which were in a good condition if I remember rightly. So £637k is the record for a Banksy (excluding the collab, which probably would have sold for similar money, Banksy or no Banksy)?
It does make me wonder why someone who can afford to drop £241k on a piece of art would need to consign it so soon after the sale? Is there any chance that the original sale fell through, hence PDP reselling it so soon after selling it for the first time?

Yes, absolutely a chance that the sale fell through. However, we'll usually see them put right back to auction as opposed to waiting 1.5 years. Given that the price from June '08 was so spectacular, I'd be surprised to learn that the sale fell through but you never know.
