Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by lee3 on Oct 6, 2014 0:18:32 GMT 1, How high you think it's gonna increase? And some one remember what was the price for the phone box already sold in public auction? Just to remove some confusion, there have been two auction results for reworked Banksy phone booths. The more spectacular result (and for my eyes the more desirable of the two phone booths) was the pick axe phone booth with the $605k price noted and discussed above:
For whatever reason the code at this site is not letting me put a photo of the pick axe box here so i'll follow up with a post of it
Banksy Title Vandalised phone box Medium telephone box and pickaxe Year of Work 2005 Sale of Sotheby's New York: Thursday, February 14, 2008 [Lot 0033A] (AUCTION) RED Estimate 200,000 - 300,000 USD Sold For 605,000 USD
The above result was the red charity auction in support of hiv and aids sufferers. The same auction was the ~$1.8 million high price for the artist on a collaborative work with Hirst. That February '08 auction I believe from memory (and could well be mistaken) was put together by Bono and it featured spectacular results across the board. Typically you'll see art sell for a lot more than otherwise normal at the charity auctions because many buyers receive tax relief above the "routine prices of similar works" and get to deduct the premium paid above that routine price as a charitable contribution. None of which is to discredit those prices or take away from the charitable will of the participants whatsoever but certainly worth noting.
The other result was from March of 2008 (one month after the red auction) and it was for the exact same reworked phone booth which is returning to auction later this month:
Banksy Title British phone booth Medium metal and plexiglas phone booth Year of Work 2006 Size Height 48 in.; Width 72 in.; Depth 60 in. / Height 121.9 cm.; Width 182.9 cm.; Depth 152.4 cm. Sale of Phillips de Pury & Company New York: Monday, March 31, 2008 [Lot 00029] Under the Influence Estimate 100,000 - 150,000 USD Sold For 121,000 USD Premium Currency Converter
Even at the low estimate for it this go around at Phillips, the buyer will have done very well for themselves in 6.5 years.

Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by Deleted on Oct 16, 2014 0:20:36 GMT 1, Who the f**k buys these things.. Might make the art world more interesting if chandelier bids were banned made illegal and also a criminal offence for galleries and dealers and artists to use agents bid up their own work that they are selling or representing.
It's certainly a big price for half a fone box that anyone can buy for five hundred quid from a scrapyard and stick in the garden.
There again have a look at the even bigger s**t sold in this auction.
Phillips certainly knows how to sell s**t to rich idiots.

I mean. I just can't get my head around how it would still be 'cool' to own this if you have a shitload of money. My brain actually hurts trying to picture the person that just bought this in my head.

The Banksy did very well. I quite liked the Kour Pour painting and the Warhol Guns canvas, which didn't sell.

Great conversation piece And if it goes up 50% or higher over next 3 years it will have performed better than most investments. i'm sure whoever bought this had an advisor. You own it for a bit, brag about it at cocktail parties, then sell it for a profit. Common practice.

Reported to have been bought in '08 by Gordon Locksley and sold by his estate as he died earlier this year. He certainly did not need an adviser, though he was one to countless others.

I'm sure lots of people that bought Hirst dot paintings are not happy with their advisor.
