Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by lee3 on Feb 17, 2016 18:01:55 GMT 1, For lack of desire for starting a new thread, here is another Banksy coming in a few weeks. These seem to come under the hammer with some frequency and I see it listed as a series of 2 in some of the previous auction notes whereas this one just states from a series. Regardless provenance states acquired at bonhams in '08 but appears to my eyes to be the same one from Digard in October of '13 which sold for ~$145k. The other one(s)? sans the white circle in the middle have come under the hammer in June of '13 for $123k and March of '09 for $110k. Visually, I love repetition like this and prefer the circle in this one.
Banksy (B. 1974) Sid Vicious stenciled 'BANKSY' (lower right) stencil spraypaint and acrylic on canvas 36 1/8 x 36 1/8 in. (91.7 x 91.7 cm.) Executed in 2000. This work is from a varied series. Estimate: $180,000 – $220,000
SALE 12121 —FIRST OPEN: POST-WAR AND CONTEMPORARY ART 4 March 2016 New York, Rockefeller Plaza

Not the same one... and doesn't look like Laz's one either... There must be at least 3 with the circle.

Phillips Art Auctions • New York, Hong Kong & London, by met on Feb 18, 2016 5:58:13 GMT 1, Query whether the withdrawal had anything to do with the medium for Bomb Middle England having initially been misdescribed.
I recall seeing images of that piece from about a decade ago. If memory serves, it was stencilled by Banksy directly onto the internal wall of some advertising agency or design studio he'd done some work with. It was later cut out, either because they were moving offices or because the business owners were parting ways.

SALE 12121 —FIRST OPEN: POST-WAR AND CONTEMPORARY ART 4 March 2016 New York, Rockefeller PlazaI've often wondered if this piece was in some way inspired by Warhol's Mao repeat... It's definitely from when the artist was going through a hard Warhol phase, I've been there myself. I recall at least one of the Bansky Sid Vicious paintings has diamond dust too so perhaps a tad more than influenced in this case. Once one falls for repetitive imagery, I don't believe there is any turning back.

The Warhol is of course an image in negative, but there are definitely some similarities between the two (leaving aside the colour and repetition):
1. Neither of the works have ended up truly resembling their subject matter.
2. Both works arguably romanticise seriously dubious characters, and can therefore be interpreted by some viewers as revisionist. In one case, it's a lost, easily-led, cartoon-punk junkie-murderer. In the other case, it's an actual leader, responsible for the greatest democide the world has ever known — the murder figures being so extraordinary they become abstract, almost impossible for the human brain to fully absorb.

Thanks for the helpful post.
I had no idea 3D had ever produced work in this style.

There's an interesting mix of originals at the Phillips New Now auction in a couple of weeks - including Kaws, Obey, Charming Baker, Stik, Retna, Faile and Antony Micallef. Given that they are sharing the catalogue with people like Richard Prince, Barbra Kruger, Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol, it will interesting to see if this is just a bit of a mish-mash or a genuine coming of age.

It'll be a laugh if that signed print goes for less than the similar, unsigned HENI print did, and I expect it will. They sure do achieve unusual results.

£13,125 for a Connor Brothers painting! Get the feeling there's some market manipulation going on there!?

I guess you'll get some serious 'bargains' for £10K and more now at the gallery.
