Perspex Box Frame • Display Box, by richy00 on Jul 5, 2009 11:12:05 GMT 1, make it yourself? perspex is very easy to get hold of, and cheap. work out your exact dims, export to pdf. take it to your local uni and rent the laser cutter. LCC is £50 per hour i think but will only take 5 mins to cut.

Im not either really, i think they look quite good for really raw looking pieces like pieces that have been painted on found metal or wood etc. Maybe Matt Small, C215 etc. Cant really see the appeal for prints.

If you dust them down do they end up picking up a few scratches?

Perspex Box Frame • Display Box, by dh on Jul 5, 2009 11:51:03 GMT 1, I am not 100% sure about a box but I really liked the framing Black Rat had done on the recent Nick Walker show and I saw some massive photo art in Perspex boxes which looked great so just got me thinking about framing the David Choe Jimi print like that.
Might not work but just thinking of some options.

I think Adam Neate piece's look good in perspex boxes (a la Elms style)

I was thinking of doing a similar frame job my Jimi but with a black frame. My concerns are that because it's such a huge print that waviness would occur over time... Should the glass be UV protective? or is it okay to go with a plexi-glass because its a giclee? do they even make UV protective plexi-glass? Also should the print touch the glass? And are spacers btw the frame and glass the way to go??
My framer also suggested Japanese hangers to prevent waviness??? any other suggestions? Also I went to three different framers and they all said they couldn't find a mat that big?? So should I go with a mat or no mat?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Perspex tends to dull with scratches over time and even quicker the more you wipe it clean, which is a real pain.

Perspex Box Frame • Display Box, by ksedge on Nov 8, 2009 19:14:03 GMT 1, i've read a few of the threads here about perspex (Plexiglas here in Canada) boxes and use of perspex over glass but can anyone comment on the scratching of it? i just took a piece to my framer and was asking about it and he was kind of against it because it's so easy to scratch. over time as the scratches build up you'd have to pull it all apart and redo it. is it really that easy to scratch (never mind the cleaning - i know you have to use special materials, solvent, etc.)?

I would generally recommend using plexi for larger pieces as it is lighter than glass. Plexi is more prone to scratching but if you are not moving the piece frequently and it is not in a high traffic area it shouldnt matter. Generally plexi is more expensive than glass too. Food for thought.

i'm out in calgary. i was hoping to get out to TO this month to go to the OCAD whodunit (love that event) as well as to stop by the C215 / Logan Hicks show but unfortunately this piece ate up my budget. good luck with the show!
