Room Rate Drop Watch Thompson LES Still Under $200 Go To The Hotel's Web Site Where: 190 Allen St. [map], New York, NY, United States, 10002
November 10, 2008 at 12:12 PM | 1 Comment
Welcome to Room Rate Drop Watch where we chronicle the plummeting prices at hotels that once commanded top dollar rates. These are often found in big cities with seemingly more hotel rooms than visitors like Las Vegas. But sometimes you can get lucky in the city of your choice. Seen a room rate drop so low you wanna tell us about it? Do it here.
Last week, we almost couldn't believe it when we found that the Thompson LES was going for $170 a night on Quikbook in the days before Thanksgiving. A new hip hotel in New York for under $200? We haven't seen this like, ever. But it was true and we booked it.
Then over the weekend, a reader emailed us a rate of $136 for Thompson LES the night before Thanksgiving on 11/26. Sadly, when we skipped over to QB to check it out the rate had gone up to $178. But that's still under $200. And if you go to the Thompson website, rooms start at $229.
The hotel is running the special on Quikbook through the month of November. In December, rooms jump back over the $200 mark.

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by sm on Dec 27, 2008 15:22:59 GMT 1, Hey,
I'm in NY for the holidays and was hoping some locals might be able to recommend some galleries or street pieces worth checking out while here that I might not be aware of.
These have no doubt been posted but a couple of great pieces I saw yesterday around the meat packing district.
Conor Harrington (wow!)
Jef Aerosol
Shepard Fairy

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Mike Marcus on Dec 27, 2008 15:42:57 GMT 1, When I was there I pasted up mainly in Williamsburg and Bushwick. Both areas are fantastic for street art. Also while in Bushwick check out Adhoc gallery. Right now they are showing a group exhibition of swoon, ghaia, elbowtoe and imminent disaster in the front room and C215 in the back.
Other places to check out are Wooster (particularly the chinatown end), Dumbo and Alphabet city.

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Mike Marcus on Dec 27, 2008 15:56:41 GMT 1, 11 spring st in soho used to be a street art mecca but that was cleaned up a few months ago. The baton has now passed to the "candy factory" which is near the bottom of Wooster next to a carpark where one of the large Banksy rats was (is?). I will dig out an email that Gaia sent me and post it here. It contains some the decent locations in Williamsburg and a suggested walking route.
In Bushwick, Andrew in Adhoc can give you advice on which streets to walk down.

also, hit the ben sherman store if its your thing, mens clothing is stupid cheap right now. i picked up 13 shirts/pants/shoes for under $400.
supreme, wesc, 99x all having sales.
check out the john varvatos store at the old cb's location, just to see a bit of the cb's history....(my gf worked there for four years prior to it closing, so it was quite nostalgic for her).
oh, we saw some mr brain wash, andre, and thats really it, but we were just in soho area.

I'll try more of the suggestions tomorrow and post any finds. I could only find one of the large Banksy rats (the one on Wooster), the others seem to have been removed, I'm a retard at using maps and am easily distracted so I may have just missed them. was very beautiful though.

There seems to be a NY listing on here every other week with all the information you should require but I don't know how to use the search on this forum. It doesn't usually work for me

Saw my first Supine which was exciting and was really impressed by all the pieces by ohm and Os Gemeos. also got to see some Faile, Bast, C215, Lister, Mike Marcus, Obey and plenty others. It crazy how much you can see in such a small area. enjoy.

A lot of places in NY are scabby unless you pay top dollar. There is only a couple of nice ones and they are booked out constantly. Just remember you get what you pay for. I paid ยฃ95 a night when the exchange rate was ok and there was a mousetrap under the bed, shared bathroom (that was ok) and the morning coffee was out of a sachet downstairs.
nice vending machine though...

I walked the whole city in 7 days literally all the way down the hudson to brooklyn bridge and up the other side before i got sore feet and got a cab to a burger joint.
walk everywhere, go to greenwich village and get lost. its all good.
where you are staying is a very busy area as times square is right behind your hostel. nice and central. when i went i was staying up on the upper west side central park - now that was cool.
