Visit NEW YORK πΊπ² Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Coach on Sept 23, 2013 18:04:10 GMT 1, Short video on Greenpoint/Williamsburg artist Jilly Ballistic Thanks for posting this. I like what she does. One thing that did stand out for me though, which had nothing to do with her art, was the American desire to put their flag on everything and anything. I don't want to sound anti-American at all. I just wonder why American's do this. I've seen pictures of primary school classrooms which have huge flags in them too. I just don't understand it. Can any of my American cousins on here explain why they think this might be done. Just out of interest.

Fair enough, and I am sure you are right.
I am just not sure that I would want to see Union Flags in every classroom, government/local government/state building, on every carriage of every train ...etc
It's bad enough seeing Union Jack shorts on holiday ;-)

Can any of my American cousins on here explain why they think this might be done. Just out of interest. hey coach. that's not an easy question to answer as i think to different people it has different meanings. and while i dont hang my own flag, or consider myself a patriot of any sort...happy to offer an opinion of why others might. specific to nyc, as the vid is based there, i think much of it is related to the events of sept11...before that, for example, i dont recall flags being on subway cars. i dont recall flags really being hung as much as they have been, aside from holidays like independence day/july4 (too soon? i kid). sept11, obviously a devastating blow in america, predominantly based in nyc, it represented a time where many banded together, as americans, as people. i think the flag in this case is emblematic to the theme of, 'never forget.' whether it be those that lost their lives in the buildings, those that lost their lives trying save others, and those who live with the loss of one of the above. while some might argue it extends to those that fought in the wars that followed. im no supporter of war, so i draw the line much earlier on. at any rate, that's my 2cent perspective.

Visit NEW YORK πΊπ² Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Coach on Sept 23, 2013 19:46:27 GMT 1, Thank you for the reply vinzc. I must admit I didn't know that the proliferation (for want of a better word) occurred post 11thSeptember. I can certainly understand how appalling that atrocity made everyone feel, and how they would want to mark in some way how they feel. So I have learnt something. Thanks. I watched a few programmes about 11th September on the recent anniversary. There was a particularly moving (upsetting might be s better word) about the "un named jumper", and the efforts of a journalist to identify him. Whilst the ethics of that is open to question, the film certainly made one think long and hard about the utterly appalling decision some people had to make that day. Peace.

Haring's work is, quite obviously, neither calligraphic nor abstract. Are you connected with this show? Because your comments are as intangible as its premise. Not at all.
Why don't you go to the show and speak to those who are.
Failing that - ring or mail them.
