"The Chinatown mural, which is the work of a graffiti collective known as Smart Crew, whose members include DCEVE, SNOEMAN and ELMO, is unlike typical street art. City Hall selected the group from a number of graffiti collectives and gave Smart Crew official permission to commission the project."

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Press Play on Jul 28, 2014 12:24:02 GMT 1, Hi street art fans.
I'm going to New York 23-31 of August and would like to know if there are any street art exhibitions going on in that period?
I'm almost ashamed that I know where little about the NY street art scene, but I would like to know the names of local artist and where I can buy some pieces.
Thanks.

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by opalis141 on Jul 28, 2014 16:13:14 GMT 1, I recommend stopping by the Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn. They will have two shows on view: The National Poster Retrospecticus and SEHER, SMITHE & KRAKEN. They also have a large selection of pieces on sale which are almost never over $5,000 and a ton of prints by artists mentioned on here.
Dorian Grey Gallery in the East Village has a lot of works available by artists that get mentioned here a bit including Stik, Mau Mau, and Saner--I just saw the Mexican street artists show there which was pretty good. It recently closed but I think they still had a bunch of prints available.
August 23rd will be the last day of the Cruel Summer group exhibition at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in Chelsea. jonathanlevinegallery.com/
If you get a chance I highly recommend visiting 5 Pointz before it is demolished. While it was whitewashed earlier this year a lot of the old work is still visible as is some newer work protesting the whitewashing on the building.
Submerged motherlands--the huge installation by Swoon--will be on view at the Brooklyn museum through August 24th. The installation is really fantastic and the museum is suggested donation.
Also a fun thing to do is to check out the Bowery/Houston Wall on Houston street arrestedmotion.com/tag/bowery-houston-mural/ and then walk around the corner to Russ and Daughters which is an NYC institution and get their famous lox and bagels.

They are taking down the Cope2 mural. The funny thing is that the day I went there, there was Martha Cooper taking pictures of it! I also recommand you to go to the museum of new york to see the "city as canvas" exhibition...

I know they will be changing them up in the fall but it is always a nice little walk and is still in the way to Russ and Daughters if you are interested.

I feel like NYC can be overwhelming with just the sheer number of options of things to do and I am always happy to help someone out with recommendations to help narrow things down a bit. It's not street art, but in August I'm planning to take my 7 year old to the Koons show at the Whitney. Save for the porno stuff he did with his ex-wife, I like his work - its fun and whimsical. My daughter's a budding artist, so I think she'll get a kick out of it.

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Press Play on Jul 31, 2014 8:58:38 GMT 1, Thanks opalis141 for great recommendations! I will check out those tips you gave me. And yeah, if you have any recommendations besides street art I'm happy to know of them. It IS overwhelming with all the options. Do you have any recommendations for things I and my girlfriend should do or see, are the places we should avoid, good restaurants (not looking for Michelin star) etc. And I would like to see some sports events like NHL or NBA but I guess it's off season. If you have some recommendations for other sports events I'd be happy to know.
Thanks!
