Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Deleted on Jul 31, 2014 12:34:40 GMT 1, Thanks opalis141 for great recommendations! I will check out those tips you gave me. And yeah, if you have any recommendations besides street art I'm happy to know of them. It IS overwhelming with all the options. Do you have any recommendations for things I and my girlfriend should do or see, are the places we should avoid, good restaurants (not looking for Michelin star) etc. And I would like to see some sports events like NHL or NBA but I guess it's off season. If you have some recommendations for other sports events I'd be happy to know. Thanks! if you're a baseball fan, you could catch a Brooklyn Cyclones game... haven't been there myself but hear it's a blast

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Press Play on Jul 31, 2014 12:57:24 GMT 1, We don't play baseball in Norway so I don't know the rules. On the other hand it's a very American thing to do and the whole point of traveling is to do the thing the locals do, right? So thank you for the tip!

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by opalis141 on Jul 31, 2014 15:32:14 GMT 1, Thanks opalis141 for great recommendations! Thanks! As Fed mentioned a Brooklyn Cyclones Game is always a lot of fun. Their stadium is right at Coney Island which is perfect if you want to see some vintage Americana at its best. I highly recommend walking down the boardwalk to Brighton Beach if you do decide to go and getting some Russian food. Oceanside Cafe is good and the prices are reasonable. Also if you go on a Friday, Coney Island has free fireworks on the beach at 9:30pm. Bring a blanket and don't be fooled by the crowds on the boardwalk. If you push past them there is usually a lot of seating on the beach right under where they shoot the fireworks off from.
A quintessential summer NYC thing to do (and its free) is to watch an outdoor movie. Here are all the movies that will be playing while you are here:
8/23 sat: goldfinger, roosevelt island's southpoint park
8/23 sat: the aviator, south street seaport 8/24 sun: purple rain, habana outpost 8/24 sun: snatch, canal bar 8/26 tue: on the waterfront, red hook's valentino pier 8/27 wed: frozen, south street seaport 8/27 wed: microcosmos (france), socrates sculpture park 8/28 thu: (audience choice), brooklyn bridge park's pier 1 harbor view lawn 8/28 thu: lego movie, nj's asbury park 8/30 sat: crazy, stupid, love., south street seaport 8/31 sun: rocky horror picture show, canal bar 8/31 sun: skyfall, south street seaport 8/31 sun: the bodyguard, habana outpost
If you decide to go to 5 Pointz you can also visit Socrates sculpture park which is a really wonderful place. There is free kayaking and canoeing right out of the park: socratessculpturepark.org/programevent/free-kayaking-canoeing-7/ Afterwards you can head over to Manettes (walking distance) for some great Italian food and home-made ice cream.
Comedy Shows in NYC can be really expensive. Usually there is a $10-20 cover charge per-person and then the clubs require a two-drink minimum per person. Skip that and instead head to Upright Citizens Brigade. Started by Amy Poehler they offer $5-8 comedy improv shows and there is no drink minimum.
If you do go to a comedy club I recommend hitting up the Nasty Show at the Comedy Cellar. It is their late-night shows on Thursdays and there are often surprise guests that pop in for it. In the past this has included people like Dave Chappele.
I would check out Goldstar and see if there are any events you are interested in going to while you are here. They often have tickets to things that are %50-%70 off. I recently bought tickets to the Jets/Giants pre-season game through them.
Many museums have a free night during the week in the summer. If you are thinking of going to a museum a would check which night they are offering for free. If you can swing it though pay full admission and go to the MOMA on a regular night. The free night is so packed you can't really see the art. Also don't get tricked a lot of the bigger museums in NYC are "suggested donation" which means give as much as you can. The people at the counter won't tell you this but it is posted on the admission sign on the wall behind them. This is true for the MET and the Museum of Natural History.
If you do see the Swoon exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum I suggest going to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden before-hand.
Also if you decide to go any of the galleries in Chelsea the Highline is actually very nice. Just try to go during the day in the middle of the week. Otherwise it is jam-packed with tourists and locals and it is hard to enjoy the gardens.
Restaurants: *En Japanese Brasserie is very good. Not too crazy in terms of price and they hand-make their tofu *Skip Little Italy. It is overpriced and the fare is mediocre. Instead head to the Risotteria in the West Village for some really good risotto. Prices are pretty much under $20 for entrees. Then walk across the street to Roccos--one of NYC's most beloved Italian bakeries for some home-made sweets. *If you want an even cheaper Italian option Pepe Rosso in the West Village is a fun experience. It is a hole in the wall and most pastas are under $10 *If you have never had Korean food or are a fan head to Korea-Town. I highly recommend Shilla (37 W 32nd St, New York, NY 10001). They are open 24 hours and their Gob Dol is good. *If you decide to go to Dorian Grey Gallery walk over to Spot Dessert Bar (the gf will prob. like it). It is a dessert tapas restaurant and is a lot of fun. *If you visit the Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn Juliettes is a decent place to eat and isn't outrageously expensive. *If you really want to splurge one night I do recommend the Michelin Rated Rouge Tomate. *Doughnut Plant is great if you want to try a really yummy Doughnut. *If you take the 7 train to the last stop you will be in Flushing which is an amazing place to get authentic Chinese Food in the City. I recommend the Spicy Wontons at White Bear and the Goa Ti at the Flushing Mall. You can find them at this booth.
If you tell me a specific type of cuisine you are interested in and a price range I can also recommend some additional places (parents are in the food biz so I have a pretty extensive knowledge about this stuff)

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by trees on Jul 31, 2014 18:10:31 GMT 1, A lot of great suggestions here. Im new buying art, so I can't really comment on your original question.
Would add that Brooklyn Botanic Gardens is next door to Brooklyn Museum, and admission is free on Tuesdsays.
Bronx Zoo is free on Wednesday
As far as comedy, Hannibal Burress hosts a free comedy show on Sundays at the Brooklyn Knitting Factory in Williamsburg. Have seen some decent acts there. Even saw Mos Def hanging out There's an awesome Southern restaurant in Williamsburg called Brooklyn Star thats worth checking out as well. Fried chicken dinner is bomb.
For street art, it's worth checking out the Brooklyn Street Art collective www.yelp.com/biz/bushwick-collective-street-art-new-york

Much better than any travelers guide I've read so far. Fireworks, outdoor movie, kayaking, those are exactly the kind of things I would like to know about. You just earned yourself a "better than google" badge! Thank you again!
coller: Thank you for your mural-tips.
Thank you to all the other members who has contributed so far. Let them recommendations coming! I'm so excited to visit NY now, flight and hotel are booked. Crossing my finger that Uncle Sam don't mind me coming (don't read anything extra into that).

Quite. Imho it's dreadful. Sorry, but when you see so many beautiful murals (take a look at sal's posts), this is shocking.

That's a big old can of beef he's just opened... Haha honestly not sure if he realized what he started; think he might've viewed it as an homage of sorts, but Cost is not feeling it.
That said, I wanna see this piece and have no clue where it is - somewhere that has a Cost/ENX post-up and graffiti tags, so that eliminates... 1/10 of the five boroughs.

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by dreadnatty on Aug 19, 2014 1:42:33 GMT 1, Shepard Fairey Begins Work on New 30 x 40 Foot Bowery Mural Today www.boweryboogie.com/2014/08/shepard-fairey-begins-work-new-30-x-40-foot-bowery-mural-today/
The Little Italy Street Art project went big and scored Shepard Fairey to create a new mural for the Lower East Side. Chosen site for the 30 x 40 foot piece is the facade of 161 Bowery, so itโll be visible from blocks away. Work commences today and will continue through the end of the week.
Fairey is no stranger to decorating the Bowery. His mural on the graffiti wall four years ago attracted plenty of notoriety after haters threw rocks at it. But another of his murals still survives at the corner of a Rivington.
Faireyโs mural is made possible thanks to support from OBEY GIANT ART, Caspi Development and the Little Italy Merchantsโ Association.

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by dreadnatty on Aug 22, 2014 16:53:12 GMT 1, This Just In: 5Pointz Is Getting Demolished Now queens.brownstoner.com/2014/08/this-just-in-5pointz-is-getting-demolished-now/
Weโve got word that demolition started today at the 5Pointz graffiti warehouse. This would make sense, as demolition was expected to begin any day now. No pictures yet, but weโll update this post as anything comes in. And if youโre in the area, feel free to send news and photos to emily@brownstoner.com. UPDATE: Hereโs a report from Animal New York: โThis morning, a backhoe began tearing into the building that has served as a legal playground for aerosol artists for nearly two decades.โ

Visit NEW YORK ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by lucky7 on Aug 24, 2014 4:16:44 GMT 1, Hi(ped), Tomorrow I arrive in Boston and the 28th I'll be in NYC.
What should I see related to this hobby-passion of ours? I know there are several people fom NY here, which gallery shouldn't I miss? Any openings or anything special happening next week?
Best, galleries, best places to see art (specially street and urban), what and where to buy. Any recommendations greatly appreciated.
