How The Mighty Have Fallen, by churchwood on Mar 17, 2022 11:25:57 GMT 1, I think two factors - the size is a massive issue for most - me included - what's a standard wall these days floor to ceiling is around 2.5m I think.
I know a lot of his work is pretty dark but this is another level darkness and I imagine the market for it as a result is pretty niche.
A while back someone on here was selling a Dale Grimshaw piece that was stunning but at the same time there is no way I could have hung it at home

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by Hairbland on Mar 17, 2022 13:12:21 GMT 1, Subject matter and size are not good reasons (Francis Bacon anyone?) for a giant Micallef OG to be selling for under 4K, no reasons whatsoever, considering his prints were selling for double that plus not so long ago. 3.8k! It’s a car crash for his market. We all knew it dropped off but to see this, I didn’t realise it was just that bad. A set of prints from a huge edition (impure idols) a while back cost just shy of 5k, and we can say that it was at that very point of over pricing your market that such mismanagement saw his market value fall steadily. And btw, Micallef is one of my favourite artists of all time Interesting conversation, though, as periodically a thread gets started as to which artists within this “scene” will stand the test of time. Art history is littered with Micallefs.
Maybe a good time to revisit the concept of who will be significant and who will fade away.

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by kwatis on Mar 17, 2022 13:19:02 GMT 1, @superguy, I am also a huge fan of Micallef, old and new work. I think that the image and size might (very slight might) be one explanation, but also think that the condition also plays a factor. Its unstretched, which means the buyer will have added costs (how ever small or large) to get it to the point to be ready for display.
In my opinion, its this particular older piece that has dropped in value, which isn't representative of his current market. He definitely has more iconic paintings and originals.

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by blurp on Mar 17, 2022 14:20:32 GMT 1, truth be told it's an absolutely dreadful image
Antony Micallef massive original 3 metres by 3 metres oil on canvas sold for.... £3,780. www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2022/made-in-britain/parasiteHas there been a bigger drop off? I remember the good old days when Kelly or Jack Osborne bought Improvised Minotaur for 100k or so. You couldn't get a set of Impure Idol prints for that money, and now you can by a giant canvas. Just wow. I remember seeing this at Laz, I wonder what it originally sold for, buyer must have taken a huge loss. Hardly worth selling. Anyway... just wow.

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by dotdot on Mar 17, 2022 16:33:36 GMT 1, I hear the vibes here.
the work itself once seen never forgotten... at Laz it was majestic.
As for what does it mean - i think it doesn't mean anything.
It was an auction - prices go up and down - demand comes along then goes on the wane.
Mic is still painting his work is still in demand.... and.. ?
I guess the same could be said about others.. but ... well what purpose does that serve ?
You like the art.. you love the art - you ... afford and buy if you can....
You don't / can't.. etc.. you .. don't.
It's all a bit subjective...
Other than that.. it was an auction - a sale... and someone now needs to place the work somewhere .. perhaps in a country house on a rather large wall.
I hear the vibes here.

Two things: 1. There's interesting story somewhere there about (mis)managing an artist. 2. This is a nice cautionary tale on a forum ofter focuses way too much on a current hot/hype artist

He moved on, and I don't think these more detailed style pieces were ever as popular as his more abstract portraits. Similar with artists like Paul Insect. Everyone wants his latest style, not the stuff he was doing with Luke.

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by STP on Mar 17, 2022 20:51:17 GMT 1, I have six Micallef canvases, three very large and three small, all purchased in 2005/2006.
They've always taken pride of place on the walls of my home, I've enjoyed them daily for over 15 years and I couldn't care less if they'd only reach a quid if they were auctioned today.

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by Coach on Mar 17, 2022 21:08:00 GMT 1, A very fine artist who was a significant part of this scene and the buzz around it in the mid to late 00’s. His work from that era still resounds for me as that of the best artist (well, him and Matt Small) discussed here. Dirty delux remains one of my favourite paintings from that time. Utterly superb. I find the tittle of this thread rather sad and unnecessary, with all due respect to the OP. Seems a little like revelry in someone’s diminished success, though I accept this may not be intentional. The man has been such a huge part of the scene that we have cherished, it’s sad to get the impression that he doesn’t garner the respect he once had. I am not that surprised this canvas did badly. It falls neither in the style I’ve been mentioning nor in his later impasto style. I had understood that those later paintings sell for decent sums, though I can’t recall where I read that, so I say it without confidence. All that having been said, I have seen a few older canvases sell for sums that I thought low. The upside is it gives collectors who love his work, of which I believe there are still many, the opportunity to own what previously they could not. I do hope the continues to command respect for his fine work.

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Mar 17, 2022 22:13:03 GMT 1, I am big fan and there are one or two prints I still like of his work.
But it is how the system works though, styles change, art goes through phases and hype fades etc. Say from ten years ago there are many artists where their prices have declined, but there must be thousands of artists from decades previously where their art commanded big sums and now their originals and prints can be found cheap.
Makes you wonder what will happen to the many $4k prints which were bought during covid and rich people spending big on originals. Crazy money was spent a print. Increased prices are not sustainable in hard economic times, which looks like happening all over with tightening up. There will be bargains to be had perhaps in coming years me thinks. 🤔

I’d rather have one of those massive impasto pieces than a banksy print They are off the scale good. No one else comes close in the way he puts the paint down and has evolved , some artists regurgitate the same old same old
Judge him on something else not this result I don’t know why he peaked and then sort of secondary prices fell off , no idea but he has always remained one of my top 5 full stop

How The Mighty Have Fallen, by Coach on Mar 17, 2022 23:56:46 GMT 1, I think two factors - the size is a massive issue for most - me included - what's a standard wall these days floor to ceiling is around 2.5m I think. I know a lot of his work is pretty dark but this is another level darkness and I imagine the market for it as a result is pretty niche. A while back someone on here was selling a Dale Grimshaw piece that was stunning but at the same time there is no way I could have hung it at home That Grimshaw was fantastic. Showed it to my wife and that was the end of that. Rookie mistake.
Years ago I had a very early Grimshaw, before his current style. Tittle was Salome. Adored it. Sold it by necessity. Miss it to this day. Fabulous artist and lovely chap. If anyone here has my Salome, please let me know.
