Visit LONDON 🏴 Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Deleted on Apr 16, 2016 9:06:05 GMT 1, Not urban but if you like rock music / music history then go to Rolling Stones exhibition at Saatchi gallery in sloane square. I am not a fan of the Stones but took our 16 year old daughters, they're not fans either, to it on Monday and were all well impressed.
Definately worth a visit, some of the instruments, costumes, posters, photos are fantastic. Quite a few one off items that were done by Warhol on display, i didnt realise that he was mates with the Stones, but it's logical really
Anyone going should allow at least 2-3 hours but you could easily spend much longer if you are a fan; you could spend two hours in a single room just reading some of the stuff and watching the videos.

Yes definitely overpriced (imo) but worth a quick view if in the area. You've also got Record Store Day around Rough Trade for a bit of activity...

I'm interested because I see Charming Baker as just a contemporary artist — not someone whose work can be subcategorised as urban art (bar the fact that he, like the majority of artists, probably resides in a city).

To be honest, I took Fergs request as 'what's interesting art based activities on in London'. I never categorise.I could say any art exhibitions in any city could fall under 'urban', regardless of artistic style or history...
Basically wasn't being too specific to the request

I am not a fan of the Stones but took our 16 year old daughters, they're not fans either, to it on Monday and were all well impressed. Definately worth a visit, some of the instruments, costumes, posters, photos are fantastic. Quite a few one off items that were done by Warhol on display, i didnt realise that he was mates with the Stones, but it's logical really Anyone going should allow at least 2-3 hours but you could easily spend much longer if you are a fan; you could spend two hours in a single room just reading some of the stuff and watching the videos.
Sounds awesome!

Definately worth a visit if you like music. My daughters loved it too, they now understand that in the pre Xfactor, youtube, Pop Idol days that you had to gig 3 years on the trot in sh1t hole towns and venues with barely a night off to become a successful band

Visit LONDON 🏴 Street Art, Galleries, Events, by met on Apr 24, 2016 12:53:44 GMT 1, Thanks to all who provided feedback. We ended up doing an AirBNB in Clerkenwell a few minutes from the Barbican tube. Looking forward to it! Welcome to London.
Recommendations in your immediate vicinity:
Pubs with character
The Three Kings (closed on Sunday) www.timeout.com/london/bars-pubs/three-kings-of-clerkenwell Walking directions here.
The Slaughtered Lamb www.theslaughteredlambpub.com/ Walking directions here.
The Jerusalem Tavern www.timeout.com/london/bars-pubs/jerusalem-tavern Walking directions here.
Ye Olde Mitre (closed on Saturday and Sunday) www.yeoldemitreholborn.co.uk/ This one is a little further out and not easy to find, but the search is part of the fun. Charming and worth the trek. Walking directions here.
Pub meal
The Slaughtered Lamb (directions above)
The Three Kings (directions above)
Relaxed Vietnamese meal
Pho Clerkenwell (closed on Sunday) www.phocafe.co.uk/locations/clerkenwell/ It's now a rather large chain since it received financial backers, but this was the original restaurant opened in 2005. Basic, good-quality food. If ordering springs rolls / nems, ask for extra lettuce and mint to wrap them in. Walking directions here.
More formal dining
Club Zetter Wine Room & Kitchen (at the Zetter Hotel) www.thezetter.com/club-zetter Walking directions here.
Relaxed breakfast or coffee
J+A Cafe jandacafe.com/ A hidden-away little gem. Walking directions here.
Stylish, more formal breakfast or brunch
Granger & Co. grangerandco.com/clerkenwell Walking directions here.
Nice little shop
Magma Clerkenwell (closed on Sunday) magma-shop.com/pages/contact For international, specialist magazines (especially fashion publications), arty books and museum-shop-type gifts. Walking directions here.
Roaming around
- Make sure to see Smithfield Market (west of Barbican station), especially the small pedestrian streets towards the south, by St Bartholomew the Great.
- The whole Clerkenwell area has diverse architecture, along with interesting side streets and foot paths.
- From your base, it's about a 20 to 30-minute walk east along Old Street towards Shoreditch, Hoxton, the Old Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane. These are the now somewhat Disneyfied, street-art tolerance zones of London. If you keep your eyes peeled while heading east on Old Street, you'll see a nice Phlegm piece in a right-hand-side alley. Later, there's the large Eine CREATE piece to your left. Both are before you reach the Old Street Roundabout. Past the roundabout, walk all the way down Rivington Street.
Pure Evil Gallery and StolenSpace Gallery are in relatively close proximity. Be careful not to get trampled over by one of the many street-art tour groups.
Have fun.

Visit LONDON 🏴 Street Art, Galleries, Events, by thewral on Apr 26, 2016 16:11:31 GMT 1, First- thanks to all that provided their two pence in response to this thread. Appreciate it and we've had a marvelous first few days in London. In love with the city, could see ourselves living here.
Have visited a number of galleries and seen a bunch of nice shows and walls. Also went to the Tate modern - and don't burn me here - but given some of the hype I've heard I was a bit underwhelmed compared to modern art museums stateside.
-BSMT - caught last day of Fanakapan show - very nice -Hang Up -Jealous Gallery - great folks there and was able to see the screen printing areas and some Charming Baker prints in process to be released in May -Pure Evil Gallery -S|2 - Charming Baker show was great -Lawrence Alkin - Tom French show -Maddox Gallery - Bradley Theodore show opening in a couple days -Unit - interesting space, nice guys, inbetween shows -Stolenspace - Dface show -Nelly Duff
Will be checking out the Maser show with Lazarides tomorrow.
Anything we've missed and should see? I heard Somerset House has an interesting event going on and will try and see it if we're in Central.
Thanks!
