FairArt - A New Kind of Marketplace, by Acme Thunderer on Feb 18, 2023 15:58:47 GMT 1, Hi, Acme Thunderer thanks for the comment. Just to be clear, at no point do we look to get somebody to list on FairArt instead of eBay - any outreach that is ever done is with an eye to for the seller to also list on FairArt, which allows them to then reach a wider audience of potential buyers. I appreciate how this might seem unorthodox, but it is a tool that is commonly used by new marketplaces to help notify users of their presence - we donโt look to mislead in any way. Ultimately it is the decision of the users as to whether or not they would like to give the new marketplace a try or not. However you want to dress it up and try to justify your actions - it does makes you look VERY untrustworthy and you are still trying to steal business from eBay.
Just because others might do this (and Iโm not aware of any other galleries doing this), that doesnโt make it acceptable.
It would completely put me off and no doubt, it would be the same for others.
When I spent serious money on art - โtrustโ is far more important to me than the price.

When I spent serious money on art - โtrustโ is far more important to me than the price. All of Sam's listings on eBay (& there's a few) advertise that the item is available on Fairart. There is no intention to sell on eBay, just an attempt to steer potential buyers away. Ignoring the fact that undercutting the price on eBay is a shitty thing to do to sellers you presumably want to attract, particularly when there isn't an intention to sell, it's understandably against eBay's terms to advertise on their platform and sell elsewhere. FAIRart it ain't.

FairArt - A New Kind of Marketplace, by LJCal on Feb 18, 2023 16:25:09 GMT 1, I would now like to ask who Sam is please. A few weeks ago he contacted me on eBay asking if I wanted to sell an item on Fairart instead of eBay. He said he was a friend of the founder of Fairart and did the soft sell thing. After I listed another piece he tried again, only this time he then went on to list the same item on eBay whilst undercutting on price and advertising it for sale on Fairart for less, in the eBay description. Something doesn't sit right. Sorry. I know someone else who was contacted via eBay (acting on behalf of Fairart) as they asked me what I knew about them. Below are the messages they forwarded to me. I quickly worked out that the person was even a member on this forum as well. Got to admit, my first thought was that is a VERY underhand tactic and any business who adopts this method is untrustworthy. I certainly donโt like companies who try to steal business away from another (no matter how big or small). I dunno eBay are a bunch of c u next Tuesdayโs who have completely monopolised a big section of the retail and second hand goods market. Their customer service is terrible and the whole site is now basically run by bots and AI, any human input is usually by poorly paid and poorly trained staff. I hope more businesses try and eat their lunch.

FairArt - A New Kind of Marketplace, by FairArt on Feb 18, 2023 16:30:07 GMT 1, Iโm sorry you feel this way Acme Thunderer and I hope comments from other users who have used the platform give you confidence and trust that we are genuinely looking to improve the experience of collecting on the secondary market.
We launched just 2 months ago and are still learning all the time, so we will review our outreach methods off the back of this. I also want to be clear that we are a marketplace and not a gallery. I know it may be a divisive tool, but it works both ways, and we have also had a number of people thank us through eBay for making them aware of FairArt and giving them another channel to sell their works through.
As I said, we will review our outreach methods off the back of this. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts.

For what it's worth, I think that's a good move. Leave the shithousery to eBay and be transparent on Fairart. The sceptical and the tentative will work it out..

FairArt - A New Kind of Marketplace, by Crime in the City on Feb 20, 2023 12:37:11 GMT 1, Quick question regarding the artists getting their 3%โฆ is there any way weโd ever know if theyโd received it?
If I decided to have a clear out and I โfairartedโ, providing all went smoothly, how would I then know it wasnโt just hot air coming from your end and that you had actually in fact followed through?
Thereโs no real way Iโd know if any artist had even got a sniff of itโฆ do you have a system in place for this?

Weโre also pursuing solutions to insurance costs off the back of some of the other comments in this thread, and some guidance from another helpful forum member.
We ask that you please continue to share your thoughts / criticism, we wonโt have gotten everything right and we want FairArtโs growth and development to continue to be led by collectors.

FairArt - A New Kind of Marketplace, by FairArt on Feb 20, 2023 16:24:33 GMT 1, Thanks for the question Crime in the City - itโs a fair one. Weโve been working on FairArt for a number of years, and it would feel like an immense waste of time if within just a few months of launching, our entire โraison dโรชtreโ was proven to be a lie. I hope this thread has shown that we want to actively engage with the community and create a long term solution that is beneficial to both artists and collectors in the secondary market. A number of artists are already aware of the platform and have taken part in interviews for our Instagram page - it wouldnโt take long for them to start calling us out publicly if we werenโt telling the truth about royalties. We are a limited company and would also be in serious breach of the The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations if we failed to pay out royalties as promised. Just a reminder, royalties will be paid out on a quarterly basis and the first payout cycle will take place at the end of next month. We cannot share our private communications with artists, but all past sales are readily available to view on the site and you can of course get in touch with the relevant artists to ensure they have received their royalty payments.
I fully appreciate that our approach is unorthodox, and that some will inevitably be sceptical at first. I hope the above has given you greater assurance, but equally happy to discuss this further if needed and open to suggestions.
Cheers, Nick

FairArt - A New Kind of Marketplace, by southwest on Feb 20, 2023 17:37:29 GMT 1, How does it work in terms of the flow of money? As a buyer, what happens when I make payment - does the money immediately go to the seller (minus your platform fee), or is it held by you and then paid out at a later date? How are funds held prior to being distributed, both to sellers and artists. Is a separate client account used in order to protect funds held? Apologies if these questions are answered elsewhere, but if not then more transparency is needed I think.

FairArt - A New Kind of Marketplace, by FairArt on Feb 21, 2023 13:21:47 GMT 1, Thanks for the question southwest.
This was discussed a number of comments ago, but itโs definitely a good idea to take another look.
All payouts on FairArt are held securely by our payment partner Stripe until a buyer has received their item. This allows for any issues with an itemโs condition / authenticity to be raised by the buyer before a seller is paid out. We handle claims on a case by case basis and give both buyers and sellers the opportunity to submit any relevant documentation. If someone is found to have purposefully misled or sought to defraud, we will charge a penalty fee and ban the account.
All funds are held in accounts with our payment partner Stripe, once a sale is made the payment is split out between seller payout, artist royalty and FairArt fees. Artists are then paid out on a quarterly basis depending on the number of sales of their work that have taken place on FairArt in that period.
This page on our authentication process might also be of interest.
Hope this all helps. โจCheers, Nick

I hadn't looked at the site for a while, and for what it's worth the current NextJS build is a big improvement on the previous iteration. Nicely built. Big fan of Strapi too.
Good luck with it all!

Unfortunately we do not currently accept original works on FairArt - that Karyn Lyons is beautiful btw. Weโre hoping to include them by the yearโs end, so please keep an eye out!
Have a great weekend. โจCheers, Nick
